What is the origin of TWW's emoticons? I had always kind of assumed they were original works until recently when I saw , , and a couple of others on the arstechnica forums.

from what i understand a great deal of tww's layout etc was based on ars technica, so i'm not surprised the smilies are from there too.

in fact despite the decade since tww's inception, you can still see major similarities between it and ars.
