thinking about picking up mass effect 2 in january when it comes out for ps3. is it necessary to have played the first one?

its not necessary but it helps a lot...liken it to seeing Terminator 2 without seeing Terminator

you can pick up a copy of ME1 for dirt cheap though

IF you want to put in >= a few dozen hours in order to complete it

I think I read somewhere that the PS3 version will have an ME-1 intro...in which you can make a few choices that will detirmine how things start off with ME2...could be wrong though.

Either way I will be taking several days off of work to play this once it drops.

In the meantime I'm still looking forward to DA:2

Don't keep reading if you haven't finished Mass Effect 2.
I wonder if you can continue a file where Shephard doesn't
survive. I got the best ending for ME2, but there is an ending
where he dies. Surely they won't revive him a second time.
I hope you didn't read that without beating the second game.

I've probably started five games of ME1 since I bought it last year

Can never get more than about an hour into before the clunky-ass controls make me want to break shit

I only beat Mass Effect 2 once (went full paragon, kept everyone alive, and slept with all the ladies in it).

I'll have to replay with full renegade and kill as many people at the end as I can without activating Grunt or Legion. I'm curious to see how different ME3 will be without them, Wrex, or the Rachni queen.

^Thanks for that, I didn't know that Shepard dies at the end if you let everyone else die. I wonder how that will work in ME3 if you load a dead Shepard save file? I guess when I go back through full Renegade I gotta make sure everyone but two of my squad dies.

Got my Jack Shepard who saved the Reaper technology and my Jane Shepard who destroyed it.

I hope that the decisions made in Mass Effect 2 have a greater impact on 3 than 1 did on 2.

I've been watching all the E3 footage. The combat looks a whole lot tighter, more like a real shooter. I'm ok with that since they bringing back weapon customization and a deeper skill tree set up. March is a LONG way away

I wish they would remove the color coding for paragon/renegade

If you can't tell from the content of the text whether you're being a nice guy or an asshole, you don't deserve to know

Plus, it blurs the line for immersion

^^That has been my thought as well, although more with the Paragon/Renegade normal conversation lines. Top is always Paragon, bottom is Renegade, and middle is neutral. It eliminates having to think about the implications of what you say.
