I recently acquired a few very strong (N50/52) rated magnets.
I have:
2- 4''x1'' disk, 700lbs pull force
3- 3''x1'' disk, 400lbs pull force
2- 2''x1.5'' cylinder, 120lbs pull force
12- 1.5'', 3/8'' walled rings, 78lbs pull force


What can I do with them?
The large magnets are actually scary. They get within 6'' of each other and they start to pull. I found this out when they were in their separate boxes and I had trouble separating them.

Are there any awesome projects or toys or demonstrations or tricks that can be done?

I'm open to past experience, web links, or ideas.

I was teaching middle school up until three weeks ago, and was planning on doing science demonstrations. Now I may do that some as a volunteer, but just need ideas.

Buying retail, this batch is about $1400. I got them for the cost of shipping ($30).
They are from an industrial application where they were no longer needed.

I'm actually scared of the 4'' ones. 700lbs is scary, and 1400lbs if they snap together.

Well, I managed to get three of the small ring shaped ones stuck together.
I can not get them apart. It was an accident, which chipped the middle one a little.
I'm not a weak person, and I don't think I can get these apart.

I successfully managed to get them unstuck.
I had to use a bench mounted shop vise to hold one group while applying lateral force to a single magnet. Not that difficult to undo then.

Personally I would probably get rid of the big ones, unless you have a application that you really want to use thme for, or have some old tvs you want to mess up, they are quite dangerous, and also worth good money.

you could do entertaining things with them, or some fun pranks, like stick a sledgehammer to a bumper of a truck.

Or if somebody parked close enough, with enough magnets potentially stick their car to a stationary object.

Best idea I can come up with would be hanging things unnecessarily heavy that look like they should not be hung... I'm assuming you could probably get an entire refrigerator hanging from something with that 4" one

I always thought the repelling force offered more a demonstrative advantage. I recommend creating some kind of floating display, thinking like an Avatar concept.

I usually sate this natural instinct to witness this kind of effect by placing a beach ball above an upturned desk fan. Less dangerous. More fun. Girls show their boobs. Whole office goes crazy.

One dangerous thing about the large ones is that when they react, it happens nearly instantly. Based on the reaction of the little ones, I have no doubt that they could break my hand if I do anything remotely dumb. Every step involving those magnets needs to be preplanned and thought out.

In all seriousness, whatever you do, you're going to need some heavy ass structural components to keep those polarities in check and not have them flip over and slam together when they're so close. Assuming your fingers weren't in the way you'll at least be lucky when they smash together and all the little shards and fragments will get stuck together.

Yeah. When the small ones got stuck together they were about 3'' apart, and I was holding the outside of them. I had just separated them (they had plastic spacers keeping them apart) when the spacer fell out. I just slightly relaxed my arms and the magnets pulled right back together. Then it took a vice to get apart.
Right now, the 4'' disks are in their individual wood boxes and in the corner of my office, the cylinders are on the top shelf of my book case, the rings are on the middle shelf, and the 3'' disks are on the bottom. They are about 2' apart at each shelf. When I put the rings in the middle, the spun to orient with the field of the disks on the bottom shelf.

I like the 'magnetic foot' idea, but I wouldn't be able to do that in reality.

How would you use it for a catapult?
