I have a 1995 Ford Windstar that I'm the 3rd (really 2nd) owner of. Previous owner was a guy I work with who got it from his dad. I have full maintenance records.
Mileage: ~147k Transmission: Auto Color: Gray Motor: 3.8L V6
Before I got it the transmission was rebuilt, EGR valve replaced, plugs and wires. It was sold to me with a CEL and a misfire, they were tired of messing with it. The shop used shitty plugs and didn't gap them. I replaced with NGKs and gapped them and then got an alignment, 2 new front tires, and replaced the fuel filter. The van runs very well now and gets 20-22 hwy mpg.
I bought this because I race motorcycles and needed a covered transport for my bike. I've installed a wheel chock and winch. Modern sportbikes fit with the windscreen removed. I strap the bikes down to mount points for the removable seats. The van being a 1995 makes it ideal for insuring and inspecting cheaply (no emissions/computer check).
There is 1 issue. When I was installing the winch one of my pilot holes went too deep and made a tiny hole in the gas tank. I repaired it so it doesn't leak any measurable amount but if you fill the tank with more than 20 gallons (25gal capacity) you can smell the gas for a few minutes after the fill up. It's a plastic tank :-\ You can get a replacement tank from LKQ for $60 and it's 6 bolts to replace it. It's such a minor problem and I drive it so infrequently I haven't seen the need to do it.
A 5x10 covered trailer will run you more than the van. A truck to pull said trailer will run you more than the van and it damn sure won't get 22mpg.
Asking $2000

1995 windstars are decent vans. My parents still have there's (same model and engine, different color) but it had close to 190,000 miles. Just a word if warning to anyone, there was a recall years ago to replace the head gasket. Also the transmissions in the 3.8L vans can't handle the torque, and they will eventually fail and give problems. Our van leaks oil and tranny fluid. Not much, but a little. I guess it also helped that my father routinely changed the the tranny fluid.
Also, we used the van to haul our boat for many years, and it did it well. It should have no problem towing and hauling bikes, just watch out for any tranny issues.
The van itself is built like a rock though. I hit a tree with, a Mexican hit my right front with it infront of the tire. My father also rear ended someone as well as my brother. The fucker is still trucking, although my mother wants my father to drive it to a junk yard. 3/5/2011 7:45:37 PM |
