I absolutely loved this, took me down a decades old memory lane:

http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/new-kid-on-the-street/

Quote :
"New Kid on the Street

MARCH 19, 2017, 7:40 PM| 60 Minutes visits the "Sesame Street" set for the first time and films the debut of their new Muppet character, Julia, who has autism. Lesley Stahl reports."

Also great to see how they actually film the shows as well as some trivia about the history of the show.

Hopefully, the new generations won't use "autistic" as an insult like the current ones do.

Worth watching the 13 minute video for anybody who used to watch Sesame Street as a kid, plus the related videos underneath should be good as well.

P.S. You will also learn that when Sesame Street first came out in 1970, Mississippi voted to ban the show because of the mixed-race cast... their rationale being that MS wasn't ready for that

The Quipu Project is probably one of the slickest awareness campaigns I've ever encountered.

Very sad but crazy fascinating:

^It's pretty autistic that you think people used "autistic" as an insult.

^ if that was an attempt at tongue-in-cheek humor, it wasn't funny.

but if you were serious -- you do have a tendency to post "seriously" while drunk -- i really don't know what to say to that, because you just proved my point.

Saying someone is "autistic" is not necessarily insulting to people with autism.

You might have autism, I don't know. But you are definitely autistic. You do have a "tendency to view life in terms of your own needs and desires."

And nobody ever used "autistic" as an insult. We called people and things "retarded" when we were kids, not "autistic."

Finally, if we're gonna get all sensitive and offended, then I'm outraged! at your post history:

Quote :
"If you ask me, this guy right here (and other autistic savants) show the existence of God."

Quote :
"GG autistic Bulgarian kid"

Quote :
"autistic teen tasered to subdue him"

Quote :
"P.S. No need to stereotype or insult autistic people."

Your failure to use people-first language is disrespectful to people with disabilities.

^^It's a thing, but I am also joking. I mean, I think it's helpful for people without disabilities to learn that kind of language, but it primarily aids the speaker, not the people with disabilities.

And it's mostly just an interesting concept. One episode of Law and Order featured a black attorney wondering allowed to his boss if he had sold out. His boss asked him rhetorically if he considered himself a "black attorney" or an "attorney who is black."

I dunno...it's just an interesting examination of the way we think about ourselves and others.

Are they junkies, drug addicts, or people with substance abuse problems? Does it matter?

^^I have done a lot of work with children with autism. For me, it has just become a habit to identify the person first when speaking of things like that. They are a child first, autism is just one part of their identity. Just like with people that have other conditions. A person with bipolar disorder, a person with downs syndrome.

I tend to stick to the person first language when it comes to things that aren't really a choice. I flip back and forth when it comes to things like with substance abuse (which I guess is technically the same thing, if you think it's not a choice), or other negative identities that tend to be a choice. Like I wouldn't say that is a person with a felony conviction, I would just say, he's a felon.

Although, when referring to programs or camps, I say "it's an autism camp" or "I work in the autism class"

So I work with children with autism in a high functioning autism class.

Honestly, I don't really think it matters which way you use it. There are some people that will get offended if you don't say it person first, but most people are like, eh whatevs, I have autism.

what an amazing person

http://mashable.com/videos/JoQDU6oN/

(cambodian man has convinced those who use use elephants for work, such as loggers and elephant riding tour operators, to rent their elephants to him permanently, and he has created a sanctuary in the native forest where tourists come to spend time with the elephants in nature, even bathe with them... he pays the elephant "owners" so that they won't enslave more elephants)

stupid link provided by the website itself doesn't work. see video at bottom of this page:

Oh she is the one from Ex-Machina! Heard a Northern European accent in the video above so looked it up... had no idea she is Swedish! Then I thought that last name looks like an Indian name, which made sense because of her dark skin, hair, and facial features.

Turns out she is purely Scandinavian -- 3/4 Swedish and 1/4 Finnish -- and descended partially from Scandinavian nobility.

Quote :
"Alicia’s maternal grandfather was Anders Gustaf Edvard Fahl (the son of Gustaf Adolf Fahl and Anna Margareta Heideman/von Heideman). Alicia’s grandfather Anders was born in Annedal, Göteborg och Bohus, Sweden. Along with Swedish, Anders also had a small amount of Baltic German ancestry, and descent from Finland-Swedish nobility. Alicia’s great-grandfather Gustaf was the son of Erik Gustaf Georg Anders Henrik Fahl and Maria Andersdotter. Alicia’s great-grandmother Anna was the daughter of Georg Carl Fredrik Heideman/von Heideman and Gustafva Katarina Ulrika Raab.

Alicia’s maternal grandmother was Solveig/Solweig Waldemarsdotter/Valdemarsdotter (the daughter of Waldemar Timper, later Hasse, and of Elmi Irene Maria Sandholm). Solveig was Finnish. Elmi was the daughter of Alfred Gabriel Sandholm and Anna Charlotta Asujamaa."

I find it extremely curious that someone of that ancestry looks like that!
