Just as suspected, everyone knows what nickle and diming a person is.
I created THIS thread because somehow, in some way, everyone on this site managed to forget this concept while arguing in the "Credit Cards (not a debt question)" thread.
They can't figure out why on Earth someone would complain about merchant credit card fees.
The believe when THEY spend $1, WE are only losing $.03 and gain $.97.
Wrong. They forget that the $1 is cut up ~$.33 to rebuy the product. They forget that the $1 is cut up ~$.43 to pay for taxes, licenses, utilities, labor, etc. They forget that the $1 is cut up ~$.20 to pay for repairs, advertising, and expanding the business In fact, the average $200,000 restaurant business is doing WELL if they get to keep just 5% of their gross revenue.
That said, having credit card companies taking 3% of every sale, including 3% of all credit card tips and taxes which is money that doesn't even belong to me, it really does make it worth an argument. 4/1/2011 9:28:33 AM |

That's a great idea however when you're nickEL and diming people, people don't care about the 35 cents they're saving. It's too small.
When you're a business and you deal with 35 cents times 15,000 transactions, only then does 35 cents matter4/1/2011 10:52:25 AM |

the customer pays waitresses/waiters 12-17%(taking out the 3% for credit card tips) for refilling drinks and bringing food. saving the customer what.. the 3-4minutes it would take to refill your own drinks and get your own food.
now the credit card save the store owner and customer 15-45sec on counting change and refilling the change drawer with the non-signature method for 3%.
plus at peek times for the store owner the credit cards are keeping the line low so they can serve more and not have people pass up their establishment because the line is unreasonable. See Cookout or Bojangles in Raleigh, if everyone paid cash those place would be impossible to get though the line on peek hours.
it's about convience. just cuz it is an evil corporation not a sweet waitress doesn't change the money.4/1/2011 3:28:31 PM |

Also I'd like to point out how much a business will save if it was robbed and most of it's transactions were done with CCs/Debit etc. You can run off with dollar bills but it's not so much fun when its all CC receipts

some of my favorite regular restaurants and bars only accept cash. i suspect it's because they have competent business owners who know they can get away with it.

I'm not sure the significance that Wednesday night holds (in this case, I was HERE on a Wednesday) but nonetheless 4 cold Lagunitas or Southamptons, etc (and consequently 4 pizzas) gets you there quickly. Beers are about $5/each. From what I hear, this is quite a steal in New York City. " |
Where are the credit card nazis on this one?
In response to your post:
Beers are $5 each there, Mine are $1.50. I have a stone oven (slow cook speed) and quality product. They have whatever's the cheapest product and a conveyor belt oven.
Yes, their concept makes a shitload of money, a lot more money than my concept, BUT it's not very prestigious. They don't really have any accomplishments other than tricking some foolish college kids into buying a $5 pizza costing less than $1 and getting a free 75 cent beer. You can't even call them a restaurant or a pizza place. It's a "lounge" and they have the right atmosphere (a basement) for college kids to be loud. My place is certainly more elegant for me to pull this off. They still have trouble paying their employees based on all the "REMEMBER TO TIP THE COOKS" comments in their review.
Why would I tip someone for making a pizza like this?
It's a great concept to make money off college students and perhaps one day I'll resort to it, but right now people are definitely going to say "hmmm" at paying $5 for a beer when I currently sell them for $1.00 to $1.50 for over 4 years. They will also be disappointed that they can't get the best tasting pizza they've ever had anymore because I cheapened my ingredients.4/2/2011 7:02:38 PM |

Maybe I'm missing the point, but many small businesses that accept cash only also have an ATM if you need to get cash out. They make the money from the ATM instead of the banks/credit companies.
Additionally, I thought the first thing financial advisers tell you to do, if you are staying in a budget, is to pay for items with cash, because it is supposed to be inherently more painful to give away.
And, I don't believe that credit cards are faster than cash in a line like at the grocery store or Bojangles. A good cashier (and I was one back in the day) should be able to break change just as fast as someone putting in their PIN on a number pad. If not, the problem is the cashier, not the cash itself. 4/2/2011 8:57:31 PM |
