What's with this guy always posting the page number on the top of every thread with some negative remark? What does it do for him? i don't get it.

It's a credibility watch thread. The fact that it exists is entirely negative. I'm still ashamed that the community at large has accepted that these are ok to have.

^ In all fairness I get the credit.

Everyone was sucking Sid's nutsac off after our ACC tourney and NIT run at the end of year one.

Then we lost one of the worst games ever in season 2 to LA-Lafayette which was basically proof Sidney wasn't a good head coach. I got flamed for the first few pages from everyone saying it was a fluke loss when it obviously wasn't.

The weird thing was that when Sid finally began turning the program around bringing in loads of talent we had a death knell injury to Tracy Smith and everyone turned on him. In the end the pressure just destroyed the team and it turned out Sidney wasn't making guys prepare and that the mounting losses had just spread disease throughout the program.

Now, we have a legit head coach and we all knew we were less than 50-50 to make the tournament this year. Except for the crazy fans who have no understanding of reality who were promoting us as a top ACC team and we'd make the tournament "just watch" with all their stupid predictions.

Well, they get a chop. Our team is okay this year but it's destined to underachieve because while we've got talent we still haven't treated the infection which is losing. Losing breeds losing and our guys still play losing basketball.

Next year is the year. We're a tourney team no doubt. This year is a building block and it will be painful to watch. But enough fucking negativity. We are who we thought we were this year. Next year hopefully we won't let them off the hook.

i like how NCStatePride came in here acting like he was defending against this cabal of Lowe supports when nobody had mentioned Lowe since 12/4 before him.

way to lose an argument against a non-existent enemey

I don't think anyone was expecting us to go to the NCAAs right away. We just said we should show improvement this year and we have. At this point, I would be happy with 8-8 in a terrible ACC and make a NIT run. 10-6 though is possible in what could be the worst ACC I can remember.

rwoody, I mentioned "last season" without talking about Lowe to make a point about improvement. The only comment I made about Sidney was a response to BanjoMan's post (second from the top on page 33) about seeing a "credibility swing happen with Lowe". I wasn't arguing anything about Lowe, just comparing the different circumstances.

Førte has a good point about the WTNY, but the difference is the state of the program. Valvano came into the program after a period of success in Raleigh. Gottfried did not. Hell, for that matter, it took Herb a while to get warm. I'm not saying we should be giving anyone the 5-year Herb mulligan tenure, but you can't really help but be in WTNY mode for results this season.

If we go 8-8 in the ACC, that would be the best ACC record we've had since 2005 (we went 10-5 in the conference and 22-10 overall).

The talent level inherited by Gott is pretty good. Not like he's walking in to Ishua Benjamin or Ron Kelly being the go to guy... The roster is decently stacked with 4 and 5 star talent.

Not to be a stickler, but those two players were very highly recruited.

The Kelley class ranked in the top 5.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and i know it's just "staaahs", but we only have three 4/5*s right? (Howell, Brown and Leslie, and Painter was at one point).

My point is that the talent from last year was never refined into something workable in a real system. The previous system was very NBA-like in that it relied on individual talents more than a solid offensive/defensive "system". Sendek was not a "great" coach (a "good" one, but not great)... but he did have a system (that bastardized Princeton offense) and his players did attempt to play in it. What Gottfried has is a ton of potential, but potential doesn't win championships.

Basically, yes we have a lot of talent on our team, but just throwing the stars out there and saying "we have 4/5 star players" doesn't mean they can play on a team. Ryan Harrow is a perfect example of that. I think Gottfried has a much better chance of doing something great with these players in the long-run than what Lowe had when he walked in, but speaking of the 2011-2012 season, he has a ton of challenges to face before he can refine this thing into something that's going to start producing wins.

I like Gottfried and thought Lowe was awful. Not sure who you're arguing with and what about. Just saying he didn't arrive at a barren basketball wilderness as far as talent.

.....again, it has nothing to do with convincing anyone of what Lowe was or was not capable of. You can't talk about Gottfried's current coaching climate without bringing up Lowe because Lowe's team is exactly what Gottfried has to work with just like how people couldn't talk about O'Brien the first couple of years without mentioning Amato. This assertion that I'm trying to "convince" anyone about Lowe is just Ernie eating crow because he's upset that he tried proving a point with a bunch of useless names and player classes on the last page.

I'm fully aware that (almost) everyone agrees that Lowe was a terrible coach.

12/13/2011 at 6:12PM, BanjoMan posted this question: "Didn't this same credibility swing happen with Lowe?" That was the first mention of Lowe.

Then at 9:57AM yesterday I responded that the situations surrounding Lowe were completely different from those surrounding Gottfried at the bottom of my post.

Where you are getting that I started some argument regarding Lowe being a better or worse coach than Gottfried is completely beyond me.

I wasn't trying to stir some shit up, I just remember everyone being pleased but I was curious if the atmosphere was the same or if people back then when Lowe got hired were trying to warn us of imminent doom.

BTW, what is that huge piece of bling on Gott's ring finger? Is that his wedding band? That has to be the biggest, most blingiest wedding band I ever did see.

There isn't exactly 'data' to back any of this up, but from what I recall, Lowe's real turning point was his second season. His first season he was being given a lot of passes because even though he had 'developed' players from the last coaching staff, they were use to a different system. His run in the ACCT gave people hope. The worst team he lost to was Cinncinati. Everyone else that season had a final RPI in the top 50 or 60 teams (AKA, mostly NCAA tournament teams.

After the New Orleans game in the 2006-2007 season, there was a lot of complaining, but the real death nail was finishing the season 4-12 in the ACC, most of those coming from a 8 or 9 game losing streak to end the season (I can't recall the exact number off the top of my head). I'd say after year 2, most people were still giving Lowe a fighting chance. I wouldn't expect many people to treat Gottfried much differently, especially if he is able to finish the season 8-8 in the conference.

Like I said before, 8-8 in the ACC would be better than we've been since 2005 so it would be pretty hard for Gottfried to make too many enemies here his first season given the current state of the ACC.

I'm pretty sure that's his NCAA championship ring from when he was on the coaching staff at UCLA when they won it back in 1995.

Gottfried's credibility gets a huge plus for his staff's history in winning titles. Gott was an assistant on a UCLA NC team. His assistants have never coaches a NC team, but Moxley was an assistant for 2 conference titles (at Charlotte), Bobby Lutz was assistant for 1 title and head coach for 3 titles at Charlotte, and Orlando Early was an assistant for a title at Western and 2 titles at Charlotte.

Mostly in C-USA as a part of the Bobby Lutz tenure, but still nice to know we have a staff that actually has a history bringing hardware back home.

^^^I didn't say it wasn't a good win. It will be great for our RPI. Still, we had a lot of opportunities to make this a much more definitive win. Turnovers are what gave that 8-point lead at the 5 minutes mark in the first half up against a team that has lost to Arkansas St and is currently 5-5 after tonight's game.

So.... yeah, I think it's fair game to say -1 for not putting this one away against this team when we could have. But your point is still understood. It's definitely a "good win".
