The company I work for is getting rid of some military field antenna masts. These are aluminum tripod style that break down into 12 poles and a tripod junction base. There are 5 sets of aluminum poles, 4 tripod bases, and two sets of extruded poles (however they do not fit the tripod bases). We are looking to donate these instead of throwing them away. Back when we first got them, they were popular with the HAM radio folks.

Please call, email or text. I rarely get on TWW anymore.

Hearing word that the Wake County Simulcast system has finished being rebanded. New CC is apparently 853.9625Mhz. Having trouble monitoring Wake County? Read over the following thread and follow the instructions exactly and you should be back monitoring in no time flat:

85 in durham today was interesting. the woman involved went between the 70 westbound ramps to 85, through the trees, went airborne over the northbound side of 85, hit the median wall and overturned landing in the southbound lanes. they originally thoiught she had a baby with her that got ejected but that turned out not to be the case.

^ That would be the statewide VIPER system you are speaking of...not the city of Durham Radio System.

Seems no one is happy with the changes over the last couple of weeks with the VIPER system and the Wake County Simulcast System.

To give the cliffnotes version: In the last couple of weeks VIPER
just transitioned their system to 7.11 P25. Part of this process was "removing" the Wake County Simulcast System from being part of VIPER. The Wake County Simulcast System is staying at a mixed mode analog/digital 4.11 platform until it joins the new Cary P25 system sometime before 2016.
A side effect of the Wake County Simulcast System no longer being part of VIPER is the change in coverage. Check out where VIPERs sites are now they are P25:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=7118

There have been complaints by both State and Wake County public safety users about the service being degraded since the P25 cutover. Seems most folks are unhappy with how coverage is now but there is no going back as legal binding agreements have been signed with Cary:
http://www.wakegov.com/is/Pages/800mhz.aspx

My advice for IMAP would be to make sure those new APX radios y'all have are programmed with sites closest to I40/RTP/Durham. That would include (in Durham) the Cole Mill Rd and Camden Ave Sites and in RTP the SHP C&L Site off Blue Ridge Rd in West Raleigh. I would hope they have been programmed correctly but being as we Durham Radio Shop Folks don't handle y'alls radios I have no idea what is programmed into them (Wireless Communications should be your programming service).

They had a call for a guy that accidentally caught an alligator trying to fish and did not know what to do with it. I guess 10-23 just meant they got there, no word on what they did with the alligator. Nobody has gator bites on special today.

each town may be different. For instance, Dare County has most of those being the same but some are very different. http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Dare_County_(NC) Only about half those are actually used as the 10 code, most others are requested in normal talk.

you cant say "shit" on ham radio...

Quote :
"Who Said you cant say "SHIT" over Amateur Radio.
By the District Director, Philadelphia Office, Enforcement
Bureau:
1. This is a Notice of Violation ("Notice") issued
pursuant to Section 1.89 of the Commission's Rules,1 to
William A. Chapman, the licensee of Amateur Radio Service
Station KB3IXS.
2. On June 2, 2004, between 7:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m., an
agent of the Commission's Philadelphia Office used direction
finding techniques to determine that Chapman operated radio
transmitting equipment on the frequency 146.550 MHz from 152
East Myrtle Avenue, Feasterville, Pennsylvania 19053. The
FCC agent monitored Chapman's radio communications and
observed that Chapman was in violation of the following:
2.a. 47 C.F.R. § 97.119(a): ``Each amateur station,
except a space station or telecommand station,
must transmit its assigned call sign on its
transmitting channel at the end of each

from the station known to those receiving the
transmissions. No station may transmit
unidentified communications or signals, or
transmit as the station call sign, any call
sign not authorized to that station. On June
2, 2004 between 7:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.,
Chapman failed to transmit his amateur radio
service call sign KB3IXS every 10 minutes on
the frequency 146.55 MHz during his
communication with other radio operators.
2.b. 47 C.F.R. § 97.113(a): ``No amateur station
shall transmit...obscene or indecent words or
language...'' On June 2, 2004 at 7:50 p.m.,
Chapman transmitted the word ``shit'' on the
frequency 146.55 MHz.
3. Pursuant to Section 308(b) of the Communications Act of
1934, as amended,2 and Section 1.89 of the Commission's
Rules, William A. Chapman must submit a written statement
concerning this matter within 20 days of release of this
Notice. The response must fully explain each violation,
must contain a statement of the specific actions taken to
correct each violation and preclude recurrence, and should
include a time line for completion of pending corrective
actions. The response must be complete in itself and signed
by a principal or officer of the licensee with personal
knowledge of the matter. All replies and documentation sent
in response to this Notice should be marked with the File
No. and NOV No. specified above, and mailed to the following

Been awhile...I have my annual NC State Fair Monitoring Guide online:
http://forums.radioreference.com/north-carolina-radio-discussion-forum/300102-ke4znrs-2014-nc-state-fair-monitoring-thread.html

Quote :
"NOTE: To monitor the West Raleigh VIPER Site during the NC State Fair you must have a digital scanner capable of following 700Mhz Sites!!!
For those with scanners the following digital Statewide Event talkgroups on VIPER will be used for this years NC State Fair:

Statewide Events Foxtrot 1 (TG 51975)= LE Interior Ops
Statewide Events Foxtrot 2 (TG 51976)= EMS/Fire Ops
Statewide Events Foxtrot 3 (TG 51977)= Dorton Arena
Statewide Events Foxtrot 4 (TG 51978)= Special Incident
Statewide Events Golf 1 (TG 51979)= SHP Traffic Posts"

Here is a copy of a traffic "post" map from years past. I believe it should be pretty accurate for this year as well.

So Cary has switched from their antiquated radio system to their new P25 Radio System:
http://forums.radioreference.com/north-carolina-radio-discussion-forum/301159-wake-county-cary-p25-cutover-tomorrow-nov-3-a.html

Downside of their switch: Cary PD communications are now fully encrypted. Cary FD & EMS can still be monitored but not Cary PD. As of now Cary PD is the ONLY LE agency in Central NC to fully encrypt their day to day comms.

Why should he know? He's only the guy responsible for personally handing out the radios in question and may face financial liability for millions of dollars should his actions be found to be illegal.

"Any attorneys' fees assessed against a public agency under this section shall be charged against the operating expenses of the agency; provided, however, that the court may order that all or any portion of any attorneys' fees so assessed be paid personally by any public employee or public official found by the court to have knowingly or intentionally committed, caused, permitted, suborned, or participated in a violation of this Article. The law really is quite clear.
Quote :
"(c) Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, and unless otherwise prohibited by law, the following information shall be public records within the meaning of G.S. 132-1.

(1) The time, date, location, and nature of a violation or apparent violation of the law reported to a public law enforcement agency.

(2) The name, sex, age, address, employment, and alleged violation of law of a person arrested, charged, or indicted.

(3) The circumstances surrounding an arrest, including the time and place of the arrest, whether the arrest involved resistance, possession or use of weapons, or pursuit, and a description of any items seized in connection with the arrest.

(4) The contents of "911" and other emergency telephone calls received by or on behalf of public law enforcement agencies, except for such contents that reveal the natural voice, name, address, telephone number, or other information that may identify the caller, victim, or witness. In order to protect the identity of the complaining witness, the contents of "911" and other emergency telephone calls may be released pursuant to this section in the form of a written transcript or altered voice reproduction; provided that the original shall be provided under process to be used as evidence in any relevant civil or criminal proceeding.

(5) The contents of communications between or among employees of public law enforcement agencies that are broadcast over the public airways.

(6) The name, sex, age, and address of a complaining witness."

Quote :
"Citing N.C. G.S. 132-1.4(c)(5), he said, “Scrambling such communication may be acceptable provided that the sheriff’s office and other local law enforcement agencies are prepared to provide real-time, unscrambled recordings or transcripts of all such transmissions (unless they obtain an order…to prevent their disclosure) ostensibly negating the stated ‘public safety’ purpose for scrambling in the first place."

It seems there's already a Raleigh lawyer, Mike Tadych, preparing a lawsuit to cash in on this.

I've been having a horrible time getting signals out here at the beach for Dare's system. I've tried adjusting my yagi a ton to get it back lined up with where I had it before the last major wind storm that turned the antenna. I have checked the connections and settings but it doesn't get to 99% signal at all.

RS Pro 106. Using http://store.weboost.com/products/301111 with the appropriate high quality cable and ends. I had definite simulcast distortion prior to getting this antenna. As far as I know nothing has changed in the county setup since they changed cc frequencies several months ago.

3ish weeks ago I had great reception when aimed at the tower that's 3.91 miles away and dead north of my house. We had some strong wind and my antenna rotated a bit and I've been trying to line it back up by ear, by the analyze function on the radio, and with a compass and pointing the thing true north and it's just not stable. I can pull up the stream and hear what's being said so I know there's actual traffic, but sometimes it's broken up, sometimes just enough to read the tg id, and other times not there at all.

I'm wondering if my radio just has trouble locking in and decoding things at all. I've had the factory antenna on and been within a half mile of one of the towers and it wouldn't lock on.

@Stowaway
Only thing I can think of is check to make sure attenuator is not turned on.
If that is not the case then that definitely sounds like a receiver problem vs an antenna issue. If there is someone else around you that has a similar scanner might want to see how their radio works on your setup.
This is one of the major issues with scanners on P25 radio systems....as you have found the scanner
has to be pointed directly at the monitoring target to avoid receiving signals from other towers.
Subscriber Units (actual user radios on the system) don't have these same issues due to the fact that the
radio affiliates to a specific tower and stays connected to that tower until the RSSI drops below a specified
level. This keeps subscriber radios from having Simulcast distortion.
Drop me a line of I can do anything to help: KE4ZNR@radioreference.com

so if I did need a new scanner, what would be your recommendation? The only time I would take the scanner with me is on a fire call that I go to photograph, but I have been using Scanner Radio lately for that. I haven't been keeping up with what's out there since I got the 106 back with Dare switched to the P25 system.

I'm going to hook it up to the computer and check for a firmware update and check a few settings tonight and see if anything looks odd compared to my saved original file from a few years ago.

They do have a heck of a nice setup over there off Blue Ridge
For anyone with a digital voice capable scanner here in the Triangle I recommend monitoring IMAP as they always have the scoop in terms of traffic issues going on....talkgroups can be found at Radioreference.com:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=7118#tgCid-20656

Up in Durham we can see the light at the end of the tunnel as far as our radio system upgrade...pretty much the only users left on our legacy radio system are DATA/ACCESS and they are scheduled to have their radios reprogrammed starting next Monday....once they are pulled over to the new P25 system then we can migrate the 12 channels on the legacy system to the P25 system and end up with 24 total channels on one P25 system.

Anyone know if they removed the dispatch tones off of the Wake County Fire and Wake Fire/Police streams? Listened to both today and didnt hear a single one. Cary has them on and I know Wake Fire/Police used to (heck about 4 pages back someone asked what they were)

Wish Joco Fire stream would do more than just dispatch. Keep seeing all these house fires lately, and cant catch anything about them.
