http://news.yahoo.com/northeast-braces-temps-near-boiling-point-104346055.html

Quote :
"NEW YORK (AP) — The extreme heat that's been roasting the eastern U.S. is only expected to get worse, and residents are bracing themselves for temperatures near and above boiling point.

Weather service heat warnings and advisories have been issued Friday from Ohio to Maine.

The high temperatures and smothering humidity will force up the heat indexes. Boston's 99 degrees on Friday could feel like 105 degrees; Philadelphia's 102 degrees like 114 degrees and Washington, D.C.'s 103 degrees may seem the same as a melting 116 degrees.

Many cities have opened cooling centers."

No really. This is an actual news article.

It took a while for me to stop laughing.

Yes, yes this still has the same headline.

I brace myself often. No heat wave needed. Although I usually do it alone in my bedroom with the door closed.

I'll still get out for moderate physical activity near boiling point, but above boiling point the dehydration is terrible!

yahoo, that bastion of journalistic excellence

a few weeks ago they wrote about a soldier who received the Medal of Honor. yahoo said it was the second time in history that the award was given to a living person. But there are dozens of living recipients from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. It should have said he is the second living recipient from the Iraq/Afghanistan wars.

No, it's worse. It's from the AP. Google the headline. There is a virtually limitless number of newspapers that have reported that temperatures "near and above" boiling point are being braced for.

They couldn't retract all of those if they tried. More than likely the AP won't retract it in any way, shape, or form.

So next time someone defends the old media sources to you...

To be fair, they didn't say boiling point of water.

correct me if i'm wrong, but there are quite a few things that boil at or below 116F, right?

Assuming my memory does in fact serve me right, this is really just a clever use of the term "boiling point" for a sensational title without actually lying.

I suppose we can presume that the author of the headline flunked CH 201 as a PAMS or Engineering major and switched to journalism (thinking smugly that s/he'd never have to use any of that absurd chemistry stuff)?

Mandatory ACDC reference:

Hells bells
Hells bells, you got me ringing
Hells bells, my temperature's high
Hells bells

obviously this is a result of a low pressure system. They just neglected to mention that the barometric pressure dropped to 2.17 inHg

The only question anyone needs to ask is if the heat will kill the giant house cat? If not, we are all in trouble.

They need to put that cat next to the overpass in Durham that people keep running into.

We need mega kitty to teach drivers the importance of clearance height.

That scale starts at 13'6"... the cat is sitting on top of the maximum height semi to illustrate the size of clearance gap between truck and bridge. Hint: its not big enough for the cat. Ya big dumbs

If you think about it, what they're really illustrating is which trucks the cat could sit on without being decapitated.

No, it's showing which bridges the cat wouldt be decapitated under while riding on a maximum height truck (which is all of the bridges). That is a pretty confusing diagram. It makes sense, but it's hard.

About the OP, water boils at a 100, and they were talking about temps of 99, 103, 105, etc... So "near boiling point" fits the bill.

^ yeah if it sits like that, it wouldn't survive any bridge. But seriously, if there was a cat on top of a moving truck, it wouldn't sit like that, it would stick to the roof and survive all them bridges!
