Ahh, interesting. But if you live somewhere with a good pool scene there's probably no point to this. Still, it reminds me a bit of a beach themed bar in NY that had several volleyball courts and tons and tons of sand brought in from the Jersey Shore. Fun place.

are the pools sunken dumpsters or something, they look tiny. I can't wait to wade in the warm, chest-deep waters of the sketchy dumpster pools!

Hearing Joel Lane's Pub will be shuddering its doors after the weekend.

It would not surprise me if health department codes would not even allow sand around pools or the bar or something.

Edison rendering

well, it's definitely a valley in the "skyline"... they should have made it taller... would have fit better in that location compared to the taller buildings adjacent to it if it was taller.

I am not a huge "skyline" guy, but ^^ is absolutely terrible and embarrassing for that lot. The city should prevent that plan from ever being built.

the Edison is not the lot on fayetteville st, its at Blount and Martin. That's fine for that lot.

That's super awkward looking. I can't think of any reason it actually matters though other than for aesthetic appeal. How much value is there in that? At some point we'll need certain areas that are very high density, right? They aren't going to start bulldozing single family neighborhoods to build more 5 story apartment buildings, are they?

note that the two buildings on the other side of the block with the edison are renderings too, they may not end up that tall

^the edison developers own that whole parcel, all they way to F-Ville street.

Look closer, there is a similar 5 story residential plan for the other 1/2 as well....+ a parking deck.

Again, i would rather this lot stay empty then add a 5 story apartment complex. You could literally go 3-5 blocks in multiple directions and acquire similar square footage and build this pile of crap.

Hell, if they are going to waste it, throw up a grocery store, movie theater, mini retail center, etc.

That block does not front Fayetteville st. The next block that does is already developed. The Edison block is surrounded by S Wilmington, E Davie, S Blount, and E Martin St. Those two buildings on the E Martin side are also renderings, they are not fully funded and may not end up being that tall. The next block east that is on Fayetteville St is already developed.

so I'm really confused by your post.

[Edited on April 27, 2013 at 11:37 AM. Reason : And the parking lot in the middle already exists ]

I meant Wilmington street. Sorry for the confusion. This proposal still sucks!! Wasting what would have been one 40+story building and one 20+ story building in the original proposal for an embarrassingly generic 5 story apartment complex. In all honesty the building currently being completed in Cameron village is more impressive.

the edison only looks out of place because they include the two hypothetical buildings that will surely end up being much shorter than that rendering shows. in comparison to actual buildings around it, its fine.

^under even the most liberal urban planning standards this is a disappointment

Look at a google overhead of the city. You are talking about 20 main city blocks at the urban core, and this shithole will take up 1/2 of 1 of those blocks. Huge, huge waste.

So a barbecue place and empty lot for the next few decades is better? Because a large tower there (beside all the other single story blocks) isn't getting funded anytime soon.

A grocery store as ground floor retail wouldn't be a waste in a downtown that has no fresh food options.

The answer to this is a resounding YES. You are making the "anything is better than nothing argument" and with the average lifespan of a building being 50+ years, nothing is better than 5 story apartments in this case.

And yes, I totally agree. I should have phrased better. Since its going to be wasted on a crappy low generic apartment complex, some better ideas for low buildings that would at least provide street level activity would be __________________.

But you need residents downtown if you want downtown to grow. They only way to do this is through low cost developments.

New Moore Square will have a water feature. That's good, if you aren't going to kick out the homeless you might as well give them somewhere to shower and shit.

An outdoor bidet and shower, public bathrooms, movable chairs?!

add some weekend volunteers passing out free food in the park (instead of one of the many kitchens in the area) and its a homeless persons dream!

Somehow those things work fine in New York City even with a homeless population of over 55,000, so surely little ole' Raleigh can figure out a way to pull it off.

^^ NY does a lot more to control (and contain) the homeless. Hell, Durham does more to control the homeless.

There is nothing preventing the homeless from using NYC parks.

It's just absurd that you are suggesting we shouldn't have nice public spaces because the homeless might use them.

Unless you are being sarcastic, but I really can't tell.

I think he was more just making a general comment on the limited effort the city puts in to prevent the homeless loitering/panhandling/etc. in the Moore Square-Bus Station area.
