it would be kinda funny if this whole thing was like that south park episode where the kids all accused the adults of molesting them

not for sandusky of course, but I'd chuckle quite a bit

^^ It's what she needs to believe in order to justify either her choice to ignore this or her absolutely not seeing this in her husband.

I can understand her sense of denial, but it's time to wake up and see what's in front of her.

That's just turrible

and "For better and worse" seems like an awful way to describe how child molestation scandals will change sports

[Edited on December 12, 2011 at 6:10 PM. Reason : really, they're implying child molestation in that tag line]

"New documents uncovered from the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office indicate that a top Penn State official kept a file about sexual assault allegations against former football coach Jerry Sandusky, and that he and the University president agreed that it would be "humane" to not report Sandusky to authorities. NBC News first reported yesterday that former Penn State president Graham Spanier and vice president Gary Schultz were not only aware of a 2001 allegation that Sandusky has raped a young boy in a school locker room, but they investigated the legal ramifications of the charges and then agreed to spare Sandusky by not turning him into child services.

On Tuesday, KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh added to the story, saying they obtained copies of a file that was kept by Schultz that showed that several top Penn State officials knew about the charges. The files would also contradict direct statements that Schultz and former athletic director Tim Curley gave to investigators. Schultz and Curley both face perjury charges for allegedly lying to the grand jury investigating Sandsuky. All three men have lost their jobs at the school.

Depending on the exact contents of the emails obtained by the Attorney General, Spanier himself could now face legal charges. The documents were uncovered by an internal probe headed by former FBI Director Louis Freeeh and according to KDKA:

"Those documents filed by the Attorney General’s office late Monday indicate Schultz told so many lies in his Grand Jury testimony that it was impossible to respond to each and every one of them."

Sandusky's trial began yesterday and immediately got under way with graphic and disturbing testimony from one of his alleged victims, who claimed that Sandusky forced him to perform numerous instances of oral sex, offered him gifts and other access to the Penn State football team, and then harrassed the boy when he tried to distance himself from the coach. He also claimed that Sandusky had him sign a contract offering him money if the boy (now in his twenties) would remain in contact.

More victims are expected to offer similar testimony today. Assistant coach Mike McQueary, who made the 2001 report to university officials after he witnessed Sandusky in the shower with a young boy, is expected to testify on Wednesday."

i mean what did they find? a memo detailing that they got together and decided to keep it a secret?

i don't mean to make light of the situation, and i'm glad they were so stupid that they're going to go to prison when they could've avoided it easily, but i just don't understand how you keep a paper trail on a decision like that.

Lots of people thing the victms will sue, I am sure some will. Penn State did the right thing last night by basically saying they will pay the victims. I think that is good for them (not the lawyers), settle and try to move on with their lives after reliving something they tried to forget. Money isnt going to help them at all, they will still have those terrible memories and their innocents were destroyed, never can get that back no mater how much money the university gives them. Especially those two boys that molestation occurred over a period of years. The others were lucky (if you can call it that) that it wasnt over and over again. It is amazing that those two boys arent messed up, afterall, they were at risks kids anyways. The 10 victims were amazingly brave. Even though it is not their fault, people can still be very cruel. You got to wonder though, he had to have so many other victims, those victims were already at risk, throw in molestation and who knows what happened to them. Nobody seems (other than Jerry) to know what happened to the boy that the graduate assitant saw Jerry molesting in the shower. Hopefully he is doing well, but for the police not to be able to find him is concerning. Did Jerry push him over the edge? I guess that will never be known unless Jerry talks which is unlikely.

Avoid a court case, pay behind the scenes, and the public forgets about it quicker. Then the alumni can get back to paying the university big money to see a bunch of kids win a football game.

Number is supposedly 20 now all together that have come forward. Penn State wants to settle, if you go by Catholic Priest settlements, $50,000 to several million per victim according to a article I read. Those two kids that had years of abuse will get millions.

Yeah, especially those that he sexually abused over several years. One of the victims said he had it easy, just the soap battles touching in the shower, he felt real bad for those that had to go through it again and again and again. I doubt he just became a pedo when he created The Second Mile, but maybe not to the extent because then he had high risk kids that nobody would believe (he thought). Actually, the DA at the time (who disappeared and was declared dead last year) did drop the ball, could of probably investigated and found more kids and prevented more abuse. It is just said, the cops (first time around), Penn State, The Second Mile, all dropped the ball on this. The extent of his sexual abuse of boys probably will never be known. The say pedophiles never admit what they did was wrong so he will most likely never admit to anything. If he would, would be a good case study into the mind of a pedophile.

To say Penn State "dropped the ball" is pretty kind, considering the school president and vice president who oversaw campus police knew about the allegations 10 years ago and made a conscious decision not to do anything about it.

I'm surprised they haven't been charged with conspiracy, yet.

Well two of them are already charged with perjury and the former school president is most likely going to get charged as well. They aren't going to get away with shit. All 3 will see prison time, I'm sure. This case is too big for them to get off with anything else.

^ I personally have a hard time reconciling the notion of the all-seeing Joe Paterno that in a lot of ways "ran" the town of State College like how Dean Smith "ran" Chapel Hill for years with the notion that he did not know any of this and is completely blameless.

If you're saying he was too far gone that an assistant can come to him describing a man raping a young boy and could not grasp what he meant by that, he shouldn't've been coach then anyway.

So he's somewhat complicit behind the scenes or he was senile and should've been forcefully retired long ago, take your pick.

I do think he was arrogant to say "I'll resign...at the end of the season." At that point I think the Board of Directors were forced to fire him.

I doubt Paterno ever heard anything like what McQueary said. That description was probably diluted from "Sandusky was in the locker room shower naked with a little boy and Mike heard flesh slapping" to something like "Jerry needs to be careful with these boys from his charity - something seems inappropriate, and we should limit their access to our facilities"

I mean, when you report something up the chain of command, do you really think the CEO gets the same version that you reported to your supervisor?

^ I believe the phrase that was written down in grand jury testimony of what Paterno had said was "fondling or something of a sexual nature with a small boy". McQueary walks in, sees Sandusky anally raping the kid, and I think I read back when this all went down McQueary was in his late 20s. If you're in your late 20s, you're intelligent enough to not describe anal sex as fondling.

On the whole chain of command thing I agree entirely. I wrote this at the time:

Quote :
"March 2, 2002 -- A graduate assistant allegedly tells Coach Joe Paterno that he saw Sandusky in the locker room shower on Mar. 1 with a young boy. The retired defense coordinator was engaging in anal sex with the boy, believed to be no more than 10 years old.

March 3, 2002 -- Paterno reports the incident to Athletic Director Tim Curley. Paterno tells Curley the grad student had seen Sandusky "fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy." The graduate assistant is called to a meeting with Curley and Schultz.

March 3, 2002 -- The assistant, according to the grand jury report, sticks by his story, saying he saw Sandusky having anal sex with the young boy. Schultz, 62, and Curley, 57, told the grand jury they could not remember the details of the meeting. Schultz said Sandusky "might have inappropriately grabbed the young boy's genitals during wrestling," and Curley said he was under the impression, like Schultz, that the affair involved little more than "horsing around."

March, 2002 -- Sandusky's locker room keys are confiscated, and he is told not to bring his Second Mile participants to campus. The incident is not reported to police, and no official investigation is launched.

March, 2002 -- The Second Mile learns of the shower incident through Penn State. Curley tells them that "the information had been internally reviewed, and that there was no finding of wrongdoing.""

Quote :
"by the way, this is an excellent showcase of language softening, over 3 degrees of separation "anal sex" has become "horsing around"

^^that's making a lot of assumptions. i think it's just as likely that patarno heard "jerry was naked and fooling around with a little boy in the shower". and even if he did hear what you say he probably heard, he should have been able to infer what that means.

How about Penn St received the 2nd most annual amount of donations ever from donors this year.

This is not the type of situation where I would embrace my Alma Mater.

Hell, I probably wouldn't even sport any Penn State gear either.

If you think you have heard some nasty comments towards UNC fans at NCSU tailgates, imagine away games for visiting Penn St fans for years to come.

That's the scary thing. There are still people that support Paterno... unless the comments sections in a lot of articles I've read are just filled with people trolling, and I hope they are. I'm starting to come around to the extremists' side... shut their athletic programs down for a decade to allow people to reground themselves to reality.
