Burr's frickin' contact page won't even load.

Looks like SOPA is in full effect and is already censoring it.

^Have you tried hitting stop before the redirect? Works wonders.

They just have contact forms from what i see

https://forms.house.gov/kissell/contact-form.shtml
http://www.burr.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Contact.ContactForm
http://www.hagan.senate.gov/contact/

I wish Facebook would go dark, that's really the only way to truely get to everyone these days. At least wikipedia is doing it, and reddit and Google help as well.

Burr needs to beef up his site - it won't even load... Meanwhile Hagans still loads up like nothing is happening. Someone has a competent host, someone skimped

Sen Burr = Staffer doesn't offer Sen Burr's opinion, but will pass along the message
Sen Hagan = Co-sponsor of the bill, staffer defends with argument 'Piracy is bad and we can always amend the bill'

About to call Rep. Ellmers

I'm curious what everyone's interaction with Sen Hagan's office was like. She is a cosponsor of the bill. the staff I got said pretty much "Piracy is bad and this is the only way we can deal with it"

here's what Im about to send to Rep. Price and Sens. Burr and Hagan pending a last readthrough for errors.

Quote :
"Dear [name]

Given that your staff must be inundated with communication today regarding SOPA and PIPA, I will keep this brief.

The overarching issue with SOPA/PIPA is not that it aims to protect intellectual property, but that the idea that a copyright holder can take action without judicial review or due process is fundamentally wrong and will undoubtedly lead to abuse.

Additionally, the bill puts the onus on the owner of a website to police user generated content, which will effectively end the age of social media on the Internet, as it is economically unfeasible for any entity to do so.

Please consider your constituents and vote against these bills rather than the lobbyists paid for by the industries best positioned to profit from the legislation.

This could be worth mentioning to Hagan's staffer

http://www.politicspa.com/breaking-holden-withdraws-sopa-support/30899/

Quote :
"Score one for the techies. Rep. Tim Holden, one of 30 co-sponsors of the Stop Online Piracy Act, has withdrawn his co-sponsorship in the face of public outcry.

The bill, called SOPA, has received intense protest from the online community including tech companies like Wikipedia and Google, as well as many of the architects of the internet itself.

“Based on my background as a sheriff, the Stop Online Piracy Act, commonly referred to as SOPA, was brought to me as a law enforcement bill,” Holden said. “At its core, the bill’s intent to eliminate theft by foreign websites protects the intellectual property of American manufacturers of all spheres. However, the possible unintended consequences, such as stifling innovation and limiting free speech on the Internet, have come to the forefront of debate. An open Internet requires that we find a better approach that is acceptable to all sides. Therefore, I withdrew my cosponsorship of this bill and will work to find a solution that protects both the openness and innovation of the Internet as well as intellectual property.”"

^^ I bought up SOPA to the Hagan's staffer 'Well, I'm not really aware about what is going on over on that side of Congress, however, in the Senate...."

Convo was like

Him: Well, we can always amend
Me: My concern though is that the amendments won't even be heard. For example during the December meeting of the house, Rep Polis tried to bring up numerous amendments, and the SOPA sponsor, Rep Smith kept shooting them down, what's to stop something like that in the Senate? Why start with such a flawed bill and hope to amend it when you can start over to a more viable solution to piracy"

just so you guys are aware, you are basically talking to the equivalent of a receptionist who makes roughly 22k/yr as the absolute bottom of the totem pole in a senate or house office. Anyone with any amount of authority doesn't answer the phone. So unless you have their personal email or office direct dial it's a little overkill to be having discussions with them.

im not saying don't call. please do. its important. but don't waste your time any more than you have to. make the call, tell her you are a voter in NC and you dont support her position. that's really all you need to do. if you're sitting there arguing with them, i guarantee you they are fucking around on the internet and reading TMZ or whatever and occasionally saying scripted shit that they were told to say by the press sec or maybe the LD issued as the official statement/talking points.

that said, im not going to be a dick and give out staffers emails because i know most of them, but if you do find any staffers names (CoS or LDs are usually good targets), most house emails work like:

firstname.lastname@mail.house.gov

and most senate emails are:

firstname_lastname@senatorslastname.senate.gov

yup, that's my understanding of the system too. i'm wondering if they are really truly paying attention to this "day of outrage" or if they are just holding tight waiting for the storm to pass....and then back to business as usual

certainly the critical mass can and often will make a difference, especially in an election year. hagan's obstinate-ness is likely due to the fact that she is not in cycle this year (i think she's up in 2016, when you will definitely have forgotten about this issue more than likely), so she is basically in the senate equivalent position of Tupac, two middle fingers up, screamin' fuck the world no matter how many calls she gets.

They are definitely walking it back, and the calls are making a lot of offices that ARE in cycle in the Senate, and of course all the House guys, a little jittery, enough to peel off cosponsors. I think I read earlier that even a couple Senate cosponsors rescinded, which is pretty solid.

got a message back from Brad Miller.

Quote :
"
Thank you for contacting me about the Stop Online Piracy Act.

I have consistently advocated for a free and open internet. While I understand that copyright infringement and the trafficking of counterfeit and illegal goods are serious issues that need to be addressed in order to protect content creators, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) creates an enforcement authority that is overbroad and threatens the free and open structure of the Internet. I am opposed to this legislation in its current form.

SOPA (and its Senate companion the PROTECT IP Act) would allow the government to direct internet service providers (ISPs) and operators of other "non-authoritative DNS servers" to block access to internet sites by filtering and redirecting requests made to these servers. There are simple workarounds that make it unlikely that this method would deter bad actors from downloading illegal content, and this ineffective scheme also has important unintended consequences. Internet security experts have pointed out that it would fundamentally undermine twenty years of progress that has been made toward establishing a protocol for secure domain name resolution.

Established companies could also abuse the private right of action to protect profitable business models by stifling innovation and competition. This could upend the egalitarian nature of the Internet which encourages entrepreneurial endeavors and free access to information. While rights holders and law enforcement need the ability to combat piracy and trafficking in illegal goods, the authorities granted by SOPA are overly broad and will likely result in more harm than good.

The Stop Online Piracy Act awaits further consideration in the House Judiciary Committee, a committee on which I do not serve. Should this or similar bills come to the House Floor for a vote, I will keep your views in mind.

Please contact me about other issues important to you. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Signature
Brad Miller
Member of Congress

Are representatives normally nicer than senators because of their short election cycles? I mean the staffers at all the Reps. offices seemed so much nicer on the phone.
