I still don't really understand that. If you are trying to get into academia you are gonna want those Pubs on your CV. Seems like a lot of work for nothing, for you and the PI . . . . . .

PI hasn't really done much on it, honestly. Except for dragging it out. He is a hands off type that gets your ideas flowing by constantly stressing you with flunking out and sucking at life.

The PI that you are thinking of is the Assistant Prof/Associate Prof, usually before they hit their 50s. Because after that their reputation is set and when you join their lab, you are walking into a sink or swim situation.

^^was gonna say what ^ said

IF your Pf has tenure and they are assholes, they can/will leverage the paper against you. My boss did it to me and another kid frequently. She tried to manipulate situations so that they would benefit her constantly, regardless of if it was detrimental to her students.

They essentially own you. Its a really shitty situation to be in.

Yeah, I would have never thought that I would be in a situation of "do this new project, or I will never publish this ever... I don't need the pubs anymore so it is your choice."

I just need to get out and try something new. I specifically sought out a post doc with a guy that is younger/more active

Just to give you guys a little taste of what my life is like right now:

About 5 weeks ago I finished a project and wrote up a paper for him. I had it revised and edited by other researchers in the department and had it tidied up by some colleagues. I push it on him, and he said no because of his grant. I then say alright, you don't have to edit it but maybe just take a look at it to tell me what you want done in the meantime. He says, no damn it, I have to do my grant and I am not doing any work like this until Spring. So, at this point I am getting very persistent, so I have it edited by another person and push him with it again. At this point he becomes very annoyed with me and gives me a speech about how busy he is and has to fund a group and what not.

It turns out that the whole time I was begging him to just glance at a paper, he was harassing another student that was dragging ass to get started on writing a paper, and he has revised it and now submitted it.

So, sure, the guy has his priorities, but he wont even look at it?

My take on it now, since this has happened many times before is that he is just not interested enough for it to take up much of his time. Sure, he might leisurely look at it after his grants are done, but he probably is not serious enough about it to submit. And now I find myself in a sticky situation because you can't really blame him for not being motivated if he is not interested: everybody has their preferences and this just isn't his. I get it, but at the same time this could have some bad ramifications for my professional life, and to me that is something to be concerned about. I am not sure what else to do at this point. Submitting without his approval is out of the question. I have begged him enough now to where I have gotten a stern "no" several times. I feel like I am running out of options.

Anyways, I didn't want to ramble and complain but it seems appropriate for the thread.

Explain this for me. In my experience, it doesn't make sense.

Maybe it depends on the field. But in Chemistry at least, usually papers submitted without the PI's name on it means that they did not approve nor care to read it, which isn't good.

How would anyone know? It's not like the editors at the journal know who you works for. It's even less likely they care. Have you just never published before and are intimidated by the process?

People would know because there would not be a PI on the paper. Plus everything that I want to do in my future goes through the PI, so doing stuff that he deliberately has voiced his opinion on is not a smart way to get a a good letter, especially if he thinks that you are wasting time working on something that doesn't interest him.

Hey any advice on taking the new-style GRE's? I'm sure some of you folks took it and succeeded to get where you are now.

I, too, am curious about the new GRE (I took it in 2004). I've been thinking pretty hard about going to get my PhD, but I would have to take the GRE again and I really don't want to

So I have an edited copy done by my PI, supposed to do a little nitpicky work on it and hand it in on Wed no problem. Then, my boss comes into to lab to say that there are major flaws in the whole project and that I need a new argument for everything. What a D bag, I officially hate him now and just want to get the fuck out of here.

That sucks. I really hope you can get out of there soon. You'd think he'd realize you're gonna have a kid and need to get out and get a real job.

I haven't slept since Friday. I finished up my shit and he slaps a whole bunch of major revisions on my desk today.

Either I

a) say fuck it I am just going to print what I have or

b) puch my date back to may. There is no way I get all of this done by Wed.

I've been rearranging/rewriting/reworking a manuscript for a majority of the weekend after getting the review back.

IMO, even though it wasn't out-right rejected, it has almost no chance of being accepted.

How do I explain to the PI that we are both wasting our time and spinning our wheels?

[Edited on October 20, 2013 at 11:06 AM. Reason : explain it politely of course]
