| Quote : | "NEW YORK -Wal-Mart Stores Inc. hushed up a vast bribery campaign that top executives of its Mexican subsidiary carried out to build stores across that country, according to a published report.
The New York Times reported Saturday that Wal-Mart failed to notify law enforcement officials even after its own investigators found evidence of millions of dollars in bribes. The newspaper said the company shut down its internal probe despite a report by its lead investigator that Mexican and U.S. laws likely were violated.
The bribery campaign was reported to have first come to the attention of senior executives at Wal-Mart in 2005, when a former executive of its largest foreign subsidiary, Wal-Mart de Mexico, provided extensive details of a bribery campaign it had orchestrated to win market dominance.
The Mexican executive, previously the lawyer in charge of obtaining construction permits, said in emails and follow-up conversations that Wal-Mart de Mexico paid bribes to obtain permits throughout the country in its rush to build stores nationwide, the Times reported.

They are going to get away with it too. Personally, as a judge, I'd make them close all their stores related to the scandal and make them redo everything legally.

i read somewhere a while back that they were bring these miniwalmarts specifically to big cities (like nyc) because they don't have the space/demand for a normal big one.
^no, not an eckerd. they're supposed to bring fresh groceries & health/beauty aids. so, almost an eckerd but with produce.

Yeah, except they are putting them in little towns.
Maybe they are putting them in big cities as well, but the only ones I've seen have been in little bitty hick towns. 4/22/2012 11:54:19 AM

we have one in Ayden. it is basically a grocery store with a little extra merchandise like you may find in a drugstore or dollar general. it's not that great unless you just have to buy milk, eggs, and underwear all at the same time. 4/22/2012 11:56:56 AM

I think their plan with these is to cater to the aging population (soon boomers) who dont get around as well and dont want to go through a huge store to get a couple items.

Let's be honest. When it comes to retail, no one has a bigger discounted dick than the boy from Bentonville.
If Aldi could ever get their shit together and open a few more stores in the same market, they could put Food Lion out of business.
Publix is coming to North Carolina. Harris Teeter is scared shitless, and rightfully so. Publix will either open stores directly within view of existing Harris Teeter stores, steal their customers, and put them out of business OR Publix will just buy Harris Teeter and convert the existing Harris Teeter stores into Publix stores.
One day, the choices will be very limited. There is only grocery chain that can save us. We must all buy stock so that they can raise the needed capital for a nationwide expansion.
Here's our hero:

It is also still privately held, which is pretty amazing for a company their size.

I heard that Liberty, NC is getting one. Population < 3000. And people will just drive to Greensboro anyway.

Ayden (where I live) has a Walmart Express and it has a population of like 5,000 people.
Graham, NC is more like 14 or 15,000 people. 4/28/2012 5:51:55 PM

I have the answer! Richfield, NC has one. 515 peeps in the city limits.
They also have a Food Lion, CVS, Subway, Wendy's, non-chain pizza place, Bojangles, KFC, and Taco Bell. Not bad.
