We must also agree that Zimmerman was not doing anything illegal by following Martin. We must also agree that Zimmerman following Martin does not give Martin the right to hit him.

It's up to a jury to determine if zimmermans actions were illegal. He perhaps could have been doing something illegal, that's what this thread is about.

We can't safely assume Z wasn't doing anything illegal. We can assume Martin wasn't doing anything illegal though when he was stalked by Zimmerman.

the only thing we "must agree" on is that neither of the two did anything illegal without actual proof otherwise.

I think I understand this law now:

1. Stalk someone.

2. Notify Police.

3. Kill that someone.

4. Murder's legal now!

When and why did it become so popular to start saying that Zimmerman "stalked" Martin?

That doesn't appear to be supported by any facts at all. Stalking implies a deliberately stealthy behavior or approaching Martin as if he were prey. I accept that he followed him, but the deliberate use of the term "stalk" to imply some kind of sinister menace is so obviously loaded and intended to imply guilt that it makes you sound completely biased when all facts are not in evidence.

Stalked came about because Z clearly intended to be menacing by his words, tones, and then actions on the phone call with 911. He had pretty much assumed Martin was guilty of whatever it was he thought Martin did, he wasn't just calling to report suspicious activity.

If you listen to the 911 calls, stalked is a very apt description.

don't worry about it...just try to stay as impartial as you can. there are people out there who like to pretend they already know exactly what happened, so they intentionally use words with negative connotations to try to spin the case one way or the other.

^^ Oh look, you either don't know the meaning of a fucking word or you're intentionally misusing it to somehow prove a point...

Quote :
"the act or an instance of stalking, or harassing another in an aggressive, often threatening and illegal manner:"

So unless you are willing to go out on a limb to say that he was harassing Martin in a threatening manner and/or that it was illegal, your continued use of the word "stalking" is now deliberately misleading. Much in the same way as you classifying abortion as "murder" when it is a legal act.

I think he's using it in the same sense that you use the word when you say a hunter "stalks" a deer. Still inflammatory rhetoric, and given that he was driving a big vehicle, not exactly stealthy or covert, but not an invalid use of the word. But equally, not an illegal act.

Based on Martin's conversation with his girlfriend, it seems more than fair to consider Zimmerman's behavior threatening.

Have you listened to zimmermans 911 calls? The word stalking is very appropriate.

^^ I have. And no, it is not appropriate to use the word "stalking" to describe the act of what he was doing, as what he was doing was not illegal, threatening and is hardly considered harassment.

But it's good to know that if anyone were following me, that I can just label them as stalkers and sue them and stuff.

Stalking has other definitions outside the legal one you know. Cats stalk mice but no one is talking about suing or arresting cats.

You're being willfully ignorant if you refuse to see how Z, by the agitation in his voice, calling him a fucking punk, and ignoring the police to rush after Martin, for no good reason, was doing more than just following.

you can argue semantics all you want, but the point isn't about legality. it's about a clear attempt to sway peoples' judgement when other words could easily (and more appropriately) be used.

The police didn't tell Z not to follow M. They said "you don't have to do that." Very different things.
He didn't stalk, he followed, maybe even persued.
It is legal to talk to and ask anybody questions. A person can follow someone and ask what they are up to. Nothing illegal about that in any state.

Why would a violent drug user and dealer have a fondness for Arizona and skittles?

[Edited on May 29, 2012 at 5:12 PM. Reason : 53 minutes to walk 0.6 miles does raise an interesting point; walking that slow in the rain? why?]

^^ i read the whole thing too. things are starting to come together and by the time this goes to court all of Trayvon's skeletons are going to come out of the closet and he's going to be made out to be some sort of drug dealing thug. Also, the way him and his friends talk on Facebook is atrocious!! What is up with this black people speak as of late? I thought black people were trying to buck the stereotypes. The way they talk just makes them look ignorant and stupid.

Seriously, can someone explain to me what the point of the meme is? Is it inferring that liberals think the example on the right or the left is "typical" of black people? (and yes, I know about obama's statement. is it inferring he wouldn't think the same of the one on the left? Is it saying that conservatives think the opposite? It seems pretty retarded to me. Must be the work of a conservative

I think you're confused.

Awful human beings deal drugs, punch bus drivers, steal stuff, look for prescription drug hookups on FB because pot and Lean just aren't good enough, and tweet things like "2 glock 40's....bitch u got 80 problems."

Good human beings call the police when they see a druggie loitering in the rain in their neighborhoods, and then defend themselves when the suspended thug attacks.

Hmm, you seem to know exactly what went down in their altercation. How do you know that when no one else does? And apparently you think it's perfrectly fine to judge someone you don't know at all and call them a "druggie" simply because they have THC in their system. Yeah, you seem like a fine human being.

Let's see....

Sold drugs through social networking - Check.
Attempted prescription fraud to get drugs - Check.
Admitted to regular drug use over the course of many months/years - Check.
Suspended from school for having a baggie with drug residue - Check.
Had THC in system - Check.
Was carrying just-purchased stuff to make more drugs - Check.

Yes, I can call him a druggie.

So from now on I will put myself in this poor innocent boy's shoes, and respond in his honor by using his own words.

Admittely I didn't click on the article, because it's on a site called "the conservative treehouse", which is obviosly biased and I can't take seriously (just as i wouldn't take a site called "the liberal treehouse" seriously).

But now I clicked on it and browsed it. And from what I can gather, he smoked pot and drank robitussin on occasion. I got news for you, most teenagers have done the same or worse. I don't think that makes him a "druggie" any more than someone who reguarly drinks beer or coffee.

I don't know if the kid is guilty or not, although you seem to know exactly what happened. But I think that might come from your bias. I think the fact that he smoked pot and drank robitussin is pretty irrelevant in this case.

^nope. I'd be more "sympathetic" of you if you didn't come across so biased and judgemental. And didn't act like you know what happened, when you don't.
