"Construction to clog interstate in Raleigh for three years
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Raleigh, N.C. — The state Department of Transportation is gearing up to repair an 11.5-mile stretch of highway in Raleigh, a project that will take about three years to complete and cost an estimated $168 million.

Construction will begin in the spring or summer of 2013 on what will be the biggest road project ever undertaken in the Triangle.

The project involves repairing pavement on Interstate 40 between the Jones Franklin Road overpass and the exit to Interstate 440/U.S. Highway 64 and on I-440 between I-40/U.S. 64 and just north of U.S. Highway 264. Work in this area since 2007 was just a temporary solution to extend the life of the highway until a larger, more comprehensive project could be funded.

DOT officials said the existing 30-year-old pavement needs to be completely removed and replaced. Considering the old pavement is up to two feet deep, the interstate has five lanes in some places and work cannot be done in cold temperatures or rain, the project will be time-consuming.

During construction, auxiliary lanes, which connect ramps between interchanges, will be added as safety measures. The DOT will attempt to keep at least two lanes open while work is in progress, but heavy delays and backups are expected daily. Short-term work on certain sections of pavement might require temporary closures, but these will be scheduled to have minimal impact on traffic and will be announced in advance.

NCDOT recommends using the following alternative routes, as there will not be marked detours:

•From the west, I-40 East to Wade Avenue (Exit 289) to I-440 East back to I-40
•I-40 East to I-540 East (Exit 283) to US 64/US 264 East to US 264 East to Interstate-95 South back to I-40 and reverse from US 64/264 (suggested for I-40 through traffic and commercial trucks)

In short, drivers can expect delays, although how much of a delay depends on the time of day, how many lanes are open, the amount of traffic and any accidents in the area. Once the project gets underway drivers can find more information and updates on the NCDOT project website and on Twitter.

If its any consolation, this road really needs it. This part of I-40 is basically falling apart

while they're at it, go ahead and start adding more lanes.

I'm a bit confused by where they say they're doing construction.

New pavement was put down on this section LAST SUMMER when the extra lane (should have been two ) was added on the Cary section. I drive on this section daily and the pavement is flawless, so what am I missing?

"I-440 between I-40/U.S. 64 and just north of U.S. Highway 264."

Is this the area of 440 on the east side of town, from the 264/ 64 bypass exit to the 40 east exit? Together those 2 stretches aren't 11.5 miles long, and they're 2 sections instead of the one stretch mentioned in the article.

Looked up the construction on the DOT's website. So it's from roughly exit 293 all the way up to past the US 64 bypass? I drive on over half of that roadway section daily and the pavement is fine up to exit 298. Dammit all, this is going to make life hell for a few years.

lol. I remember when they were working on the beltline under the Melbourne (or Athens, I forget) bridge. Unannounced and right in the middle of rush hour.

2:00AM would have minimal impact. I bet they start breaking down around 4:00PM but by the time they are out of the way it will already be too late.

It will be interesting. Probably the worst conceived road project I ever saw was repairing I-40 across the length of Arkansas. Rather than close one section, finish, then move on to a new section they had something like 80+ miles of I-40 down to one lane all at the same time... and of course there was just one small crew out there working on one small section.

Instead of repaving this clusterfuck, they should just blow it up and start over. New pavement isn't going to solve the fact no one seems to know how to properly merge in a cloverleaf interchange.

^^If they are going to result to nuke it from orbit please include Western Blvd. On south bound US1 people need to slow to a crawl to take the exit and you have people merging into the left lane, brings the whole highway to a crawl. If it's raining or looks like it might rain in the next 30 minutes that whole area becomes one big pile of idiot.

Anyway, the backup usually starts there and is just further complicated by the Hillsborough and 40/Wade exits. It'd be nice to have another lane or two and a complete redesign of the Western exit.

This isn't a new internet posting, but the source seems legit: http://www.ncdot.gov/projects/I40ImprovementsRaleigh/

And it looks like there will be some improvements! They're adding on ramp / exit ramp lanes that will run all the way from exit to exit. This is quoted from the website:

Quote :
"Extending lanes between ramps (auxiliary lanes) to make it easier and safer to get on/off the interstate at the following locations:
- US 1/64 and Gorman Street interchanges (both east and westbound);
- Gorman Street and Lake Wheeler Road interchanges (both east and westbound), and;
- Rock Quarry Road and I-40/US 64/I-440 interchange (westbound)."

So in effect those areas will have one extra lane.

Pussies. I started driving when the beltline was two lanes all the way around. Well, halfway around because I40 had not been built from Durham to Wilmington. Of course, this was prior to a lot of the influx of new residents in te triangle.

When the beltline widening project started, the whole goddamn thing was like that forever. Before the widening, the whole beltline was a parking lot every day at rush hour.

So from the west, they suggest taking 440 from Wade Avenue toward Glenwood Avenue, past the New Bern Avenue exit?

According to the map linked below, the stretch of 440/64 between 264 and 40 will also be in the work zone.

Phase II is supposed to end Spring 2017.

There's no way in hell that'll actually happen

Anyone have a clue when Phase II completion will actually happen? The Fortify website is close to worthless.

Back on topic, I'm extremely confused at this point because it would appear that all Granite (contractor doing the work) construction vehicles and equipment have been removed from the construction zones. Outside of a few dumpsters they're all gone
