Definitely a fan of this hire.

And as far as next year, we lose a very good QB and some O-Line. But the OL wasn't great to begin with. Losing Wolff and Bishop will hurt as well. I don't think that the cupboard is entirely bare, but I think most people tend to agree that next year (even if TOB stayed) was going to be a down year.

^^^And amerson (we may be better off lol) biship, wolff, lucas, wilson, wallace , palmer, mattes, carter, slay, allen and wentz

By my count including glennon, we lose 11 starters and our depth (as we saw this year) is not great

Still have a good d-line
dj green can play LB
Burris will be an excellent corner. Byrd isn't too bad either
The backup OL played well against FSU - they should be good starters
We're returning decent receivers.
Pete Thomas will be a good QB.

sand robot - I agree that TOB didn't leave a 12-0 team. But Doeren can go at least 7-5

Good point, I had forgotten about him.

Losing Bishop and Wolff is gonna hurt a lot. The QB situation will be interesting to watch (Thomas/Stocker).

We definitely don't have the talent to compete on either side of the ball next year.

Our offense was as one dimensional as you can get, and wasn't even that effective in that dimension. Take away an NFL signal caller and our offense was barely D1 quality this year. Next year it will be terrible unless Stocker is a Greek God.

A good defensive line is not enough to overcome a brand new secondary and barely D1 talent at LB.

Our special teams were also abysmal this year and given that TOB hasn't recruited enough talent to even play on starting units, I have to imagine our depth will be terrible as well.

On the other hand, this looks like a very strong hire. He's young so if he's successful we could have a good one on our hands for the next two decades. He has a great track record so far, and given how down the conference is right now we can definitely turn this program around in a few years time if he shows enough promise on the field to get us back in the recruiting mix.

Not as hard as it sounds, the previous coach had built things well at NIU. Still, I'm excited. To be honest I would have been pleased with most names that had been tossed around. Here's hoping he quickly finds players he can work with.

Good hire, but after watching his championship game last night I worry about how he manages finishing out games. His team heavily depended on a dual-threat QB which we have coming in (forget who, Stocker or Thomas) so we're pretty well equipped for his style of offense.

From the coaching search thread last night when I was watching the MAC Championship game:

Quote :
"One thing I didn't like about Doreen was that he let off the gas in the fourth quarter when up 14 points and like 13 minutes to go in the game. He burned 5 minutes but had to punt when bad playcalls put him out of field goal range. This let Kent State get their touchdown drive and 15 seconds later they got a turn over when Darlene went to run the ball more but had a bad hand off. He then rammed the ball down their throat for a TD but Kent State answered, and when Daren got the ball back with 44 seconds they gave up a sack and decided to just go to overtime.

Good game for Doeren up until the 4th quarter...that sounds familiar..."

From PP:

Quote :
"Might as well have kept TOB. We have a MAC coach which is just about a D2 level coach with no contacts in NC, or any other southern state to recruit. Sorry, but I think it is a bad hire. IF you really want to win in today's football world and take championships and be consitantly ranked you do not hire a mid level coach with no recruiting contacts in the area."

The last time we lost a coach to a better job was 1979 and he died the next month so I have no idea where you got this idea. Everyone has either been fired or retired.

^^^^Because we haven't had a coach good enough to warrant any interest from bigger, better schools. If Doeren proves to be successful enough to stick around for a couple of decades (your words) then I assume he'd attract interest from other schools. It's a moot point right now though...he was hired just hours ago.

If he does well enough, it can start making NC State a more attractive destination for coaches. Even so, I really don't think it would be all that hard to retain a good coach that does well here. I would assume it would bring in a lot more money and support to a program that's already got a great supporting fanbase despite having so many years of mediocre results.

Doeren’s dedication to academic excellence is unmatched. Northern Illinois is the only school in the nation to have a player win the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award in both 2011 and 2012. Huskies’ two-year starting noseguard, Nabal Jefferson, was named one of 15 winners of the 2012 NFF Scholar-Athlete Award, and is a candidate for the 2012 William V.
