So maybe this has been covered already, haven't read the whole thread, but why is this being referred to as a LGBT issue? Isn't it just a T issue? Gay people, lesbians, and bisexuals are not seeing any sort of discrimination from it. I get that a lot of the time those groups fight for things together but it seems a little odd to me.

I understand the thought process behind reclassifying it as "not a disorder" to try and be PC, but I think acknowledging that this is a mental disorder, and that these people need help, is more important.

I guess I can see that being true about a host of mental disorders, so what would be an appropriate standard for deciding which prison an individual would go to, specifically being transgender?

Seems like it would just be case by case based on what makes the most sense. There doesn't need to be absolute rules for everything, does there?

Such bigots... calling it an "abnormality" is offensive... we should call it something else so these babies commit suicide at a lower rate and aren't victims of bullying.

Ideally, maybe there shouldn't have to be a rule for everything. But Charlotte's city council made a rule that any business that serves the public must allow transgender individuals to use any facility they choose. On a case by case basis, I can see how it will be no big deal for some businesses but might be a big deal for others.

I really don't see how a policy like this can not discriminate against someone.

^^ charlotte protected in law what people were already doing, it prevented discrimination.

HB2 forces all businesses to do things 1 way, removing any choices, in addition to setting limits on min wage and law suits. If your angle is 'government overreach" (like mccrory tried to say) HB2 is the actual overreach in this case.

in regards to the bathroom forcing part of HB2, it does not cover all businesses, only state buildings and schools

I thought it included all businesses open to the public(the Charlotte ordinance). In that case, a YMCA would be required to allow an individual to choose whichever locker room they wished. If that causes them to lose business or go against their beliefs then how is that not discrimination?

i can't find the exact text, but my understanding is that it prevented discrimination everywhere, yes

my comment was to moron, HB2 does not force all businesses to do things 1 way (discriminate), the bathroom part of the law only applies to government buildings and schools. Under HB2 any other private place is allowed to have policies that prevent discrimination.

Discrimination is in the eye of the beholder, and then when it isn't there it is invented by the left.

I have the exact same rights as a mentally ill transgender person, to use the bathroom that matches my biology. That is not discrimination. Mental delusion does not grant you additional rights above that of the majority, no matter how desperately the media and gullible masses attempt to frame this into an "oppressed victim" narrative.

I wish a brave SJW such as yourself had been alive in the segregation era, I'm sure you would have made a great argument that "Race is a dynamic, fluid social construct" and that people should be able to use whatever bathroom they "feel" they currently identify with.

Are you now comparing being "trans" to being handicapped? I think that is very Transphobic of you. Also hypocritical after you claimed "Trans" isn't a disorder.

This is the thing that gets me. People were already doing it. There were no bathroom police going around and checking birth certificates. By and large, transgendered adults were using the bathroom of their choice all across the state, in both businesses and public buildings, and no one was hassling anyone about it. I don't see why the morons here in Charlotte felt the need to push this issue, and in such an amazingly stupid way, because the status quo was ultimately what they wanted. Instead, they drew attention to it and allowed the morons in Raleigh to do their thing with HB2, ultimately making life (in the short term) worse for ALL LGBT people in the state, for absolutely no gain. I feel like the aims of Jennifer Roberts would have been much better served by not poking the bear in Raleigh like this, but that's just me.

People in Charlotte don't give a fuck what you do in the bathroom. Get some head, do a bunch of blow, take a shit and smear it on the walls. It's all good in the crown town.

so what if you stop calling restrooms that correspond with gender identity and call them rooms that correspond with anatomical differences? would that satisfy both sides?

Aside from his retarded immigration policies, and his views on healthcare, how is he not a Democrat?

He's pro big government, pro-choice, pro-lgbt. I haven't heard his stance on entitlements, but hell, even Bill Clintion wasn't huge on entitlements.

What else is left that would identify him as a Republican? Real question.

Plenty: http://www.ontheissues.org/Donald_Trump.htm

And to the "always has been" point:

Quote :
"A 2011 report by the Center for Responsive Politics showed that over the previous two decades of U.S. elections, Donald Trump made contributions to campaigns of both Republican Party and Democratic Party candidates, with the top 10 recipients of his political contributions being six Democrats and four Republicans.[207] After 2011, his campaign contributions were more favorable to Republicans than to Democrats.[208]

Trump was an early supporter of Republican Ronald Reagan for U.S. president,[209] and in February 2012 endorsed Republican Mitt Romney for president.[210] When asked in 2015 which recent president was best, Trump picked Democrat Bill Clinton over Republicans George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush.[211][212] The Clintons' foundation has received between $100,000 and $250,000 from Trump,[213] and they attended Trump's 2005 wedding reception.[214] Trump wrote in 2008 that Hillary Clinton would be a "great president or vice-president."[215]

Trump's party affiliation has changed over the years. Until 1987, he was a Democrat;[3] then he was a Republican from 1987 to 1999.[2] He then switched to the Reform Party from 1999 to 2001.[2] After a presidential exploratory campaign with the Reform Party, he wrote an OpEd in the New York Times stating that he was leaving the Reform Party because of the involvement of "David Duke, Pat Buchanan and Lenora Fulani. That is not company I wish to keep."[216] From 2001 to 2009 he was a Democrat again;[2] he switched to the Republican Party again from 2009 to 2011.[2] An independent from 2011 to 2012, he returned to the Republican Party in 2012, where he has remained.[2]"

PhD authored article I hadn't seen previously posted.

A pull quote:

Quote :
"There exists no consensus among psychiatrists on the question of which nonconformists fall—or should fall—into the medical category of mentally disordered. There is no consensus among the nonconformists either. Difficult, too, is the fact that most transgendered people do not regard themselves as mentally ill and do not wish to be identified as “disabled.”"

^^Ok, so all of his points aren't Democratic, but many certainly aren't Republican either. He wants to

cut defense spending (D)
cut Dept of Ed and EPA (R)
pro planned-parenthood (D)
pro affirmative action (D)
anti PC (R)
0% corporate tax (R)
pro charter schools, school competition (R)
pro eminent domain (?)
waffles on climate change (?)
not pro-Isreal (D)

I mean he's all over the place.
