Looks great for the price, just takes 3 seconds longer than the pen to read.

if you sign up for their sale emails then often do open boxes/weird colors of the thermapen for $75 pretty often.

That's the thermometer I currently use. Once you get used to the programming, it's pretty solid.

Grilled a beer can chicken last night. That falls under "why haven't I tried this before"? A+ will grill again. Easy, juicy meat, crispy skin.

(Though the bird was pressed against the top of the kettle lid, and that was with it riding rather low on the can. Not sure how some people fit the things on there if the can doesn't slide in basically all the way.)

beer can chicken is a waste of beer. spatchcocking is the way to go with whole chickens.

Just found a recipe for bacon and chive butter smoked chicken. I threw my chicken in some brine last night, gonna crank up the akorn to about 375 at around 3, spatchcock the chicken and go to town

^^ welcome to the club.

1. Season the grates
2. Grab a Weber 22" wire grate to sit below the main Akorn grate (where you will sit a heat deflector for smoking)
3. Light some charcoal and learn how to maintain 225 degree and 350 degree temps. Cant stress this enough. Will save you hours of frustration down the road (and meat destruction).

Best way to season the grates is by just going ahead and smoking a butt

It was $244 shipped for the red one.

I seasoned my last one with a bunch of almost expired red sticker johnsonville patties and 73% fat burger meat from food lion they are greasy as fuck.

Added this lil guy to the lineup today. $125 and it came with a tank, propane, and a few accessories.

Grate was rusted in a few spots but I removed it with the included brush and pumice stone and did a few applications of canola oil + heat and it's ready to go. Now if I could just find a cover for it that doesn't cost $45 Amazon has a great $7 grey one for my Kettle I just wish they had something similar for this grill.

I think she might've picked it up on the lightning sale, but I haven't asked. The timing seemed right.

In reference to the heat deflector and insert rack, I picked this guy up on Amazon (along with some silicone gloves) http://www.amazon.com/Char-Griller-6201-Smokin-Stone/dp/B009E8NATC?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

^ Also pretty sure my parents have that exact same grill.

went with my dad to this grill store in North Raleigh. he's been ogling a Saber infrared grill for a while now - like two years and he's gone to this store to quietly lurk around and look at it several times but this time he took me. sales guy comes up trying hard to sell him on the grill and they get into this brodown about who knows more about Saber grill technology. it was like straight off of King of the Hill.

he left again without buying anything. dude just refuses to spend money on himself, so in the spirit of father's day my mom and I decided to just split the cost of the grill ($1100) and buy it for him. can't wait to try it out.

In the akorn, the Weber grate with a pizza pan is cheaper and more versatile than the smoking stone. Sometimes I put charcoal on the upper grate to sear the piss out of steaks. Also, the pizza pan won't break if you drop it.

Nice, never thought of a upper tear searing option. I might have to get a grate and pizza pan in addition to the stone.

I've been wanting to try a smoked chuck roast. Rub it with Montreal steak seasoning or something like that, smoke it like a butt, then pull it apart.

Raleigh's Costco has USDA Prime now...think Ribeye is $18/lb and Fillet is $22/lb (might have more options). Buddy got the fillets and holy shit were they good. 1.25-1.5". Wrapped them with bacon and reverse seared with lump.

I'm curious how much more that stupid Butcher's Market place charges for that meat.

I promised some Boston butts for my family's beach trip but waited too long to get them from piggy wiggly. When I went this morning they only had 1 4 lb butt, and the butcher didn't have any more to cut, so I begrudgingly went to food lion. I got 2 8.5 lb butts that were almost $30 a piece, and I was furious, that price just didn't seem right. Got up to the register though, and for some reason it knocked $30 off. I checked the flier and signs, nothing about bogo or 50% off, so maybe I just got lucky

Grilled thick cut pork chops last night on the performer using apple wood chips.

I was very pleased with the taste but probably should have taken them off at 140-145 instead of 150.

My original Akorn took a shit on Fathers day morning. I went to dump the ashes and the guts of the ash pan fell apart. We had big plans for a steak dinner that evening so we went to Home Depot and picked up this beauty. I used a bunch of almost expired burger and sausage from food lion to get a it seasoned and burn all the paint smell and shit off before cooking the steaks.
