Jay Smith implicates 1993 UNC Team in Fraud

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jay-m-smith/college-basketball-an-unhealthy-addiction_b_9463152.html

Quote :
"The first UNC course offered as a favor to the basketball team, scheduled in 1988, was an independent study for two painfully weak students who hovered at or below the eligibility line. They received helpful B's, and out of that little experiment the UNC course scam was born. In fall 1992 one star of the basketball team ostensibly pursued an independent study with a faculty member who was on sabbatical at the time. (I know this because I shared a fellowship leave with that faculty member.) This had to have been one of the "shadow" courses offered by the administrative assistant who played such a central role in the fraud, a generous woman whose closest friend was the basketball team's academic counselor. She assigned A or B grades in the shadow courses, which required no attendance and little work. One player on the 1993 team took seven suspect courses with her help; four starters on that team majored in the department where she worked. UNC's 1993 championship run seems to have been aided and abetted by fraud."

Don't remember this explicitly being mentioned somewhere before.

As far as I am concerned every single game since 1988 should be forfeited including up until the punishment drops. While players may not be directly benefiting from it this year their program is clearly where it is today based on 20+ years of cheating and therefore should be included in the forfeiting of games. If they were to win the title this year it should be almost immediately removed along with all the others.

ha... either would be a friday and after basketball season.
almost hard to believe in coincidence with these cheaters anymore. i've never seen an entity have so many different things work out so perfectly/neatly. it's hard to tell where the corruption ends and the four leaf clover suppository begins.

When they win this title, it'll stick.

Our only hope is that it just replaces an older one that they're stripped of.

Hopefully the NCAA takes into consideration that they gamed the system to be able to play this season rather than programs like Louisville or Syracuse who were able to admit they fucked up and go ahead and self impose. If the world has any justice the NCAA should make an example out of them that they dont play this bullshit game UNC has been playing for so long. They wont though which is what makes all of this so infuriating. They cheated for so long they were able to build this brand. Taking away the 3 titles that were cheated to achieve wont even hurt them at this point. Taking away scholarships and such wont hurt them. A few years of postseason ban wouldnt hurt them either once those things fall off things will go right back to how they were. The only punishment that would actually hurt them is killing their program for 20 years to even it out and we know that will never happen.

The NCAA will not punish them for gaming the system this year. Hell, they have been helping UNC during this process and likely helped UNC come up with a plan to be eligible this year. And if they win the title this year I feel like they might get a more lenient sentence. "See what we can do when clean? All that academic shenanigans really didn't matter and we've learned our lesson."

In my opinion, the only fair post-season ban punishment which would be effective would be ~4 years for football, basketball (both genders), and baseball. That's one whole class of students who would not get to participate in revenue sports. Any more (even if warranted) would seem like beating a dead horse. Any less would be a slap on the wrist.

Most likely scenario? They will pull a Penn State here. Historic sanctions matching public outcry which are dropped after a year or two of good behavior.

Some of use want the banners to be dropped from the Cheat dome, while there are some who don't care about stripping past titles, they only want UNC program to be hurt by sanctions going forward. I don't for 1 second believe the NCAA will strip them of their 05 and 09 titles. I'll be happy with a multiple year post season ban for basketball. And somehow hope UNC don't win it all this year.

Goddam our program should be on the ascendancy we should be making the most of their troubles

I really enjoyed reading this, it's all out there for the world to see, but then I had a sad because I realized that no one really gives a shit and UNC is never going to be punished. They obviously cheated to keep guys eligible and they've obviously done everything they could to stay postseason eligible this season since they have a good team. It's absurd. Fuck those guys.

If the hammer doesnt get dropped on UNC that sends their program back into the stone age I go back and forth on whether we should just say fuck it along with every other school and just start straight up cheating since there is obviously no real downside to it. Then I remember that I actually have some morals and decency unlike the cheats down the road and would rather suck with my dignity than go down that road. I mean all you have to do when you get caught is figure out if your team is gonna be good the following year... if not you self impose and if so you delay things out to make sure you get a run at a title first.

I'm sure we are not cheating on the scale that UNC is. The State hierarchy more or less decided in the late 80s after the valvano mess that *umm* *dim eyed* *ptch* *lip smack* that it just wasn't worth it man.

^^ ahh so cute. But its time to wake up Peter Pan- you're really naive if you think there is a power 5 conference school out there that doesn't break the rules in some ways to aid their sports programs.

There's no question that all schools will steer their players into easy majors or easy sections of particular classes. I tried to find the section that had football players in it when I took large classes, and if I walked into a class and the whole offensive line was there or the starting back court was chilling in the back row I knew it was likely to be an easy A with little effort.

That happens everywhere, anybody who went to school and had any interaction with athletes has stories about easy classes full of athletes. UNC really went above and beyond that though in a way that I can't ever even remember hearing about from even SMU or Miami football's glory days.

no seriously. come up with certifiable proof of fake classes, fake papers, forged grade changes, rental cars, and backdoor money through tutors/advisers for multiple decades at each of those schools and we'll talk.

yeah man that's not what he said at all. i'd love to believe that we are 100% squeaky clean. but i'm sure there are at least some sorta shady things that go on at basically every P5, including state. obviously what happened at UNC is not going on everywhere. that was/is on an entirely different level. but i'm not under the impression that we are totally squeaky clean.

Yea, whoa guys, I never said we had mafia level corruption going on like there was/is going on at UNC. I'm saying I would be shocked and sorely disappointed in our Athletics Department if we weren't breaking some of the ncaa's garbage rules.

Wow. Listen here my angry young dawgy. Tone it down a bit, and think.... If I was able to provide "Proof" of this type of cheating, would you really want me airing it out publicly on tww?

^^Son, once again, you are getting way too angry about this. I never said that what unc did is "ok". I never on the record claimed that I did or did not have proof of violations. Seriously, I'm worried about your blood pressure.

But if I did have definite proof of NCAA violations that have been going on for the last decade, you son, would never know about it.

Because I'm not interested in winning online dick measuring contests to the detriment of our beloved school. It is YOU son that is just as bad as a Unc fan, because you are obviously trying to bring down NCState by looking to expose violations in public and I'm not falling for it.
