Seems like there's enough buzz, and changes being made to this iconic car, for it to warrant its own thread for discussion.

While rumored to drop 400lbs, it looks like the truth is more like 200lbs. 3 powertrains will be offered: V6, turbocharged I4 and Coyote V8. Overall size is shrinking, with length down 16.5".

i'm very much intrigued by the new 2015 but chances are i will be keeping my '12 GT unless reviews are incredible.

With European and federal fuel-economy standards in mind, Ford will introduce the first turbo­charged four-cylinder Mustang since the 1986 SVO model. Its premium should be justified not only by its expected mileage gain but also by its high, flat torque curve.

The EcoBoost V-6 is unlikely to appear in the Mustang’s engine bay before the 2017 model year.

A STABLE FULL OF WILD HORSES
Ford has many plans for ultra-high-performance Mustangs. The first will be a successor to the Shelby-branded GT500, and the company will continue to offer Ford’s “Trinity” supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 making 662 horses. Past the new-gen Shelby GT500, Ford has additional powertrain options for two more hi-po nameplates.

The first is a twin-turbocharged V-8, code-named “Voodoo,” which displaces between 5.0 and 5.5 liters and, most intriguingly, has a “flat-plane” or 180-degree crankshaft, as Ferrari has used in its V-8s since 1973. This configuration, also found in the late Lotus Esprit V-8, is akin to connecting two four-cylinder banks to a common crankshaft. Flat cranks theoretically improve power, throttle response, and the soundtrack at the expense of greater vibration. This EcoBoost V-8 will produce between 550 and 600 horses. It will power a Shelby GT350–branded model that eventually will take over from the GT500, as Ford is desperate to discontinue that car’s costly and thirsty Trinity.

The last high-performance Mustang will be a successor to the Boss 302. What will power it is still not finalized. If all goes according to plan, Ford would like to use a naturally aspirated version of the Voodoo engine. However, initial testing has not yielded the desired results in Dearborn, and it’s possible that a hotted-up version of the 5.0 Coyote could be used—as was the case in the previous Boss."

i'll prob test-drive it once the dealership i go to gets them in. i have an awesome relationship with my salesman (am responsible for 3 cars from him already) so i'm sure he'll hook me up. we were already talking about it over the summer too.

I like it. There's a lot of Aston Martin around the nose, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. And like the turbo 4 option (should probably be standard rather than the V6, actually, as most people aren't going to pay the extra bucks for +10hp/20tq and +3mpg.)

The torque advantage of the turbo 4 is way more than just 20 lb-ft. The curve is gonna have a lot of area under it.

I like this direction Ford is taking towards a lighter Mustang. I think the advantages were pretty obvious when the new Challenger and Camaro came out in 2010 or whatever. The old underpowered Stang kept up pretty well in a straight line while out-handling, out-breaking, and getting better gas mileage IIRC. I hope they keep cutting weight and adding power.

I'd love to pick up a 2011-2014 model with the Coyote motor if they drop pretty steeply in price when the new model releases. Probably not dropping $25k-$35k on a second car anytime soon, but this looks like it could be quite a value.

yeah. That was one of the complaints on the 7 speed auto in the IS-F. The car just can't seem to make up it's mind what gear it wants to be in as you drive around town. get on the gas just a little and it downshifts once, going up a small incline it'll downshift again. I mean, you aren't personally shifting 10 gears, but I wonder how smooth it is for around town and stuff.

I think teggy knows what I meant by my original comment.

The closest thing to a CVT that can reliably handle a respectable power output

These new autos shift pretty damn quick and the shifts have a less notable impact on the power band since it isn't such a big jump from one gear to the next. They actually drive really well compared to the automatics of 10 years ago.

Those IS-F dudes wouldn't like a 4 speed auto any more than the 7 speed. It would have just been shitty in a traditional way rather than shitty in a "this car keeps shifting gears all the damn time" way.

yeah. 8. i'm sorry, but the review on the 8 speed was still the same. Smooth transmission, just a minor annoyance to hear engine rpm's bouncing between frequent gear changes.

I think a 7 speed manual for a sports car is fine. Nothing is really changed except that 7th is an ultra tall highway cruising only gear. So for performance oriented driving you wouldn't be shifting more than before, compared to a 6 speed.

To be fair though, 5 gears is all you ever used in a manual transmission before also. I can't remember the last time I needed to shift into 6th on track... Porsche's excuse for going to a 7 speed transmission was using the same gearbox as the 7 speed auto (PDK).

beh, how much 'taller' gearing could one use on the highway... or are they spreading the ratios in between? I remember driving a friend's 95 z25 with the T56 in it, and it was damn near idling in 6th at 55 with a .50:1 6th

^^If the damn pressure plate didn't cause so much clutch slippage I would have used 6th gear at CMS on every lap in my S2000. Instead I just let the rev limiter bounce off the fuel cut in 5th a bit before having to brake.

Dunno if I'll need 6th gear at the track in my BRZ but I'm thinking not.

^It's even taller man I believe the C7 Corvette Stingray is geared for 300 mph

C7 transmission is basically a C6 transmission with an extra gear in it, in terms of ratios. It has 3 overdrive gears. (5 through 7).

Any Ecoboost V8 would most likely be a "hot V" configuration like the current twin turbo BMW and Audi engines.

The thing that I'm most excited about is the future availability of a irs rear clip that will no doubt have parts availability to hold tons of power.

In 5 years there will be enough rear clips in junkyards to make them as cheap as custom 9" setups.

^ you think ford is going to re-design the coyote head for reverse flow? Or completely design a new v8 for it?

As they mentioned cost on the 5.8 at low production volume I would then assume it would simply be a twin turbo coyote as in the cobra jet concept. Or they will develop an engine that can replace the hurricane engine in the truck lineup entirely as well as power the top of the line mustang.

Might I add that there have been published rumors of a small displacement boosted V6 for a long time now. http://blog.caranddriver.com/ford-working-on-new-small-v6-were-guessing-itll-be-turbocharged/

Now what the heck good does a flat plane crank really buy you on a high volume V8? On paper it's cool for a high revving Ferrari or something. Maybe some GT500 equivalent would get it. It sounds like a silly rumor but maybe there's some reasoning I'm not seeing.

Well, I don't see why it wouldn't stay as a 90 degree DOHC V8. So in the course of designing a new head architecture for direct injection the intake and exhaust ports would be reversed in the process. To meet modern requirements you have to do that if you twin turbo a 90 degree V8. Audi and BMW are doing it for a reason--it allows two twin scroll turbos without exhaust gas interference across the banks. Ford has had research engines and such to explore this--it's published information, and I actually posted about it in my technical ramblings thread. Now if they're too cheap to do the reversed head flow, they will give up low end torque and fuel economy due to high residual exhaust gases from blowdown interference.

The heads have to be redesigned for direct injection anyway, at least in terms of the combustion chamber, intake port, and piston bowl. Whether you want to call it a redesign or a new design, that's semantics. The real question is whether they will do central DI like the 1.6 and 1.0 Ecoboost or side DI like the 2.0 and 3.5 .

Current heads have di bosses in them that aren't drilled or tapped. I don't see the architecture changing much if any at all. Reverse flow if it was single turbo sure doing it on a twin doesn't gain much but heat soak issues in the engine.

And yes I did not it's called voodoo... Doesn't mean it's thaaaaaat different from coyote.

Triton, Romeo, cammer, intec, etc... All just mod motors.

I was really really hoping the front was more aggressive, if it was just 10% more aston martin i would probably buy one. I think it looks okay, but I was hoping for something really ground breaking.

not really loving it from the magazine pictures. i'll reserve full judgement till i see the reveal photos and of course see it in-person. but at this point, i will probably hold onto my '12 for quite awhile.

I think it will be a terrific deal for mechanical components wrapped in a body I could take or leave

the proportions are a lot more attractive from that angle, but I still wish the grill was smaller and 10% more aston martin

Hard to be a fan of this design when the leading edge of the hood is over 2 feet off the ground. On a sports (or sporty) car?!?!
