So I know all you purists will hate it because it's not a v12 a v10 or a v8.....

But this new turbo tech is flipping sweet and I hope it "trickles down" ASAP.

So I don't even know if they have a waste gate, it appears that all turbine energy is harvested. Some for operating the compressor and some is stored in a battery pack to drive the compressor until the engine can spool it.

It seems like if there is a waste gate it would be electric and function once the .5555kwh battery is fully charged.

That's what I have picked up at least anyone got anything else ?

Engine - it’s out with 2.4-litre normally-aspirated V8 engines and in with 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines, revving to a maximum of 15,000rpm. The current engines produce more than 750bhp, whilst the 2014 units will produce around 600bhp with additional power coming from Energy Recovery Systems

2 mega joules worth of kers in the turbo and 2 more on the driveline it's self.

Obviously I know little to nothing about this

but how in the hell are they going to keep that thing cool? Is that a ridiculous question?

I'm sure the piston sleeves etc are finned to hell to increase cooling area. Turbo is inter cooled and the car will have dual radiators I think.

Does that energy recover system not build up a lot of heat? I mean, Im' sure they deal with it either way, but I'd imagine it makes it way harder with all that crap.

The thing is going to be a massive refrigerator on wheels

These new turbo engines sound pretty damn weak compared to the turbo engines of the 80s. And that doesn't make sense to me

they've technically had that for years with KERS

They haven't had turbos so it wasn't off the turbine and it didn't spin the compressor.

Adds a whole new heat/rpm component.

When the materials are capable of doing so with the egts of the fuels they run.

Or with the new electric assist.... Never.

Melbourne qualifying was a hell of a show. We'll see how this race goes.

Fun first race, but compared of the engines of the previous 2 decades these turbo V6s sound horrible.

If people are complaining about the exhaust sound now, just wait until F1 mandates 100% electric cars in 2016. It'll make a horse race seem raucous.

Nice troll attempt. The FIA already governs over an all electric open wheeled race series. It's called Formula E.

BlackJesus, you do know that the video you embedded is of a V8 engine, not a V12 that you referenced in the associated comment...?

Yes I know that, but it sounds 1 miilion times better than that silent V6. A race without loud engines is not exciting.

I should get a flat plane crank for my car.

Formula E will become Formula 1 in the next couple of years. Electric cars are the future. If F1 keeps using gas engines they'll be just as antiquated as NASCAR. Don't they sound glorious?
