2000 Saab 9-3, automatic. 4 new tires/spark plugs + inspection this month. $2k. Recent belts, alternator, new speakers for the stereo/cd changer. Runs great, plenty of power and good fuel economy.

Not yours personally? Why get rid of it? I'm wondering if I would be nuts to go from one Swedish piece of shit (Volvo 850 Turbo) to another, especially because I only work on stuff when I have to now. And money for parts and repair is a concern as well.

What are your thoughts?

Left front control arm broken when I hit a curb I didn't see. Broke the wheel, fucked the rack, bent the fender. And twisted the cradle. I really don't have the time to fuck with it, so I ain't fixing it.

I’m the owner of the car yes. I have a V70 on the side as well. I was going to use this to replace the V70 but I’m finding I really want something more fun. It’s for mom to drive when she’s in the country but I just don’t want these things anymore. I mean I love them, this is my 3rd Saab turbo, they’re tough as nails (as is the V70 -I’m not a huge fan of the 850 in comparison, door panels come apart, headlights suck, noisy and worse fuel economy, distributor, bla bla). At the end of the day though, I want to kill myself when I get back into an automatic FWD car. I need something dual clutch or somehow a ton more drive. Or I can say screw her and make her drive something more fun, a manual. It is my second car after all. I’m going to sell both the Volvo and the Saab, replace with a Mini Cooper JCW, an A3, an e46 M3 w/SMG or (gulp) a second non turbo 911. I’m stupid but dammit I want to ENJOY driving anything I own. There, I said it.

What's wrong with driving the 996T all the time that you need a 2nd car? I thought it was the jack of all traits; ideal DD and superb driving characteristics!

I wrestle w/the idea. I could write about this for a while, I’d say things like “when I need to have more than one passenger”, “when I want to drive downtown”, blah blah. I mean, of course having a 2nd car is always nice, like over the last few days when I replaced a radiator on the 911 and took my time cleaning everything before putting it all back together, but I suspect, really I just want the variety of a different type of car. I do think that the 911 is MORE fun when it’s an occasion to drive it, instead of getting in it every day. The car has started to feel special to me, in a way that I haven’t felt from another car before.

Anyway, this isn’t about me or the 911 or whatever, back to originally scheduled programming, cheap transport! I’m a fan of the Swedes, I like their design/engineering language for the most part. But I hate japanese cars w/a passion, so I’m biased. Also, I’m mad at Saab (and Volvo really) for not making a modern RWD car w/a manual transmission and a turbo.

a second car will keep your ass from having to get a ride when something happens to your primary car, and make you enjoy / appreciate it more

it's not always feasible, but worth it, IMHO

Im in this same boat.

Looking something in this price range.

I'd love a 4 banger jeep wrangler...but doubt anyone has one of those.

otherwise, some beater with high MPG is cool.
