At this point I'm starting to think that Malvo is maybe somehow an agent of the Devil or something. I don't know how else he would have known that the grocery store owner would have had that pact with God and that hitting him with all that Biblical stuff would have made him react the way he did. Also, the whole fish thing. The only reasonable scientific explanation I can think of for all of those fish coming out of nowhere is a water spout over a lake and it would have to be a pretty high concentration of fish in one exact area of a lake for that.

Fish could have been dropped from a plane by accident maybe

As for how Malvo could know some of that stuff...I can't think of anything off the top of my head but are you sure Malvo didn't maybe overhear some conversation or something like that where maybe he made mention of God or the bible, etc?

I was thinking about them being dropped from a plane but there are a few things that stand out about it that just don't make it feasible. For one, the fish weren't splattering when they hit the ground. In fact, a few of them were still alive (one of them was trying to breathe). That means that they weren't dropped from that high of an altitude and they had to come from a water source where they were living just a few mins earlier.

Also, it happened RIGHT after that blizzard. White out conditions. No pilot could fly in those conditions, let alone fly close enough to the ground to drop the fish at the right location at the right time without even being able to see the target. It's possible Malvo knew where the son was hiding out since the supermarket guy still trusts him but still, that's a long shot.

Malvo knows the supermarket guy is religious (he has that stained glass stuff in his office and mentioned it in the first episode) but I don't recall him overhearing him talk about it too much. We didn't even find out about the pact the guy made until the previous episode.

Originally on Dennis' ransom note he said, "I know about the money" and Malvo asked him about it...did he have an answer? Something to do with his wife right?

If Malvo knows there is some sort of controversial thing about a pile of money, I don't think it's that much of a jump to put that and the religion together and see what happens. Kind of like cold reading.

I see your point about the fish though. What about a tornado? Can that happen during a blizzard?

the whole "Malvo" plot plays like he is the Devil/Devil's Advocate, but there are "logical" explanations for everything that has happened. the fish thing is a rare but documented natural phenomenon, though true to television, it conveniently strikes exactly where the vehicle with with the son is. Malvo was shown to be able to bleed as well. I think they just want to give him that "supernatural" vibe while keeping everything within the "natural" realm.

though, I was wrong about Lester's wound, so take that with a grain of salt

I don't know nearly enough about weather phenomenon to know about tornadoes in a blizzard but that is similar to what I was thinking with a waterspout. That is the only reasonable thing I could think of that could cause all those fish. If that was the cause I guess it could boil down to either A) Dumb luck on Malvo's part that something symbolic like that would kill the son or B) Malvo really does have some kind of supernatural connection.

It is entirely possible for Malvo to be that good of an assassin/mercenary/whatever he is, it just seems to me that this isn't the type of show where really convenient/rare things like raining fish would be the cause of something so important to the plot line. Also, you gotta be thinking about who Malvo is working for and for what compensation? He can't be in it just for the money -- he is too smart and too talented to be wasting time in the middle of a frozen wasteland when he obviously has the skills to get money through other means. It is possible that he is just a complete psychopath and that some people just like to watch the world burn (but that could fit into him working for the devil too). I think in one of the earlier episodes he was on the phone with who I assume to be his boss saying he got held up and needs a few more days, right?

^^ yep that's right (about him saying he had to take care of some more business or something).

And I agree...something just seems a little to perfect for Malvo. Obviously he's portrayed as a smart man, but things always work out a little perfectly or conveniently for him. But I'm not sure exactly what to make of that just yet.

How often do we get to see a series with such an awesome score? The orchestral arrangement helps elevate this show to cinema quality.

In the third (I think) episode, Malvo and that grocery store talk a bit about his religion. Enough for Malvo to sorta pick up on this guy's relationship with God and the Bible.

Apparently, we're supposed to be disappointed in Lester.

I'm not saying I'm proud of him, but I dunno...as long he's hurting people who suck, I'm okay with this latest turn of events.

Feel kinda bad for Molly though.

Yeah his brother is a dick but he doesn't deserve to have his life ruined and probably get the death sentence for it. Although I am still rooting for Lester too. He's always been so timid, it's good to see him act more aggressive to save himself.

At first I was kinda rooting for Lester for the reasons mentioned above. He had a shitty life, shitty wife, etc. And he seemed to have gotten roped into some bad shit by Malvo. I kinda felt bad for him. But now he's kinda become self aware and is aware of what he is capable of doing. And I no longer root for him or feel bad for him

Starting to think more and more about Malvo having some kind of supernatural connection. When the cop went to the urinal, the lights flickered twice, once each time Malvo put his foot back down on the ground. Also, unless he was in there waiting in the stall for like three hours for the cop, there wasn't really a way of knowing when he'd go piss or if there would be another cop there to relieve him or something.

Interesting thought, perhaps in the hospital waiting room, Lester was tricked into "making a deal with the devil" and that's why his luck has been so good with everything in the past year. Without a "soul" or whatever, Lester's morality has disappeared hence him doing all that bad stuff with pretty much zero guilt or second thought.

This is the best show on the air right now (since Mad Men's season has ended). Well, either this or Louie.

I think those who are expecting some revelation that Malvo is a supernatural being in some way are going to end up disappointed. I don't think he's any more supernatural than, say, Chigurh from No Country (who Malvo frequently reminds me of)--just an unstoppable force of evil. In fact, I think the themes of this show link up even more with NCFOM than they do Fargo the movie. I half-expected Malvo to tell Lou to call a coin flip when he was in the diner.

Either way, that episode was one of the most tense hours of television I've ever watched (the unbearable tension is another thing this show shares with NCFOM). Masterfully directed and written for maximum suspense. Every single main character could've easily been killed by Malvo in this episode. Only poor fucking Linda actually was.

The finale next week is gonna be bananas. I'm not rooting for Malvo or Lester by any stretch, but I think it'd possibly make for a really dark ending (and possibly great TV) if one or both of them got away with it. I just hope Key and Peele don't die. Or Molly.

Just got around to watching this week's episode. I am constantly amazed by how good this show is. I don't see why more people don't watch it. The part in the diner with Molly's dad was really well done. Her dad seemed to know immediately that Malvo was up to no good, which reminded me a lot of when he was following Gus and the neighborhood watch guy was suspicious. It seems like some people are able to just tell that he is evil.

Also, the Garden of Eden comment seals it for me, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is about as deep as it goes when it comes to explaining any type of supernatural backstory. Honestly at this point I feel like it would negatively affect the show if it did outright confirm it -- in my opinion it is better when left unanswered.

So what is going on with the supermarket owner? It's been a year since the fish tornado.

You do know that just because it says that at the beginning it doesn't necessarily mean it is true, right? Pretty sure that if this were actually based on a true story, there would have been some news articles or something linked to it by now.

^of course it isnt a true story, are you serious? His point is they want it to be able to possible to be true, which means they cant make Malvo just start flying or something, but they can certainly imply he is the embodiment of evil.

No. Lester is evil. He killed his first wife. He set his brother up to go to prison for the murder. he set Malvo in motion to kill Hess. He set Malvo in motion to kill all those people in the elevator. He sent his wife in as a canary in the coal mine to be killed. He is just an evil coward.

every action after him killing his wife has been to protect his own ass

him sending in the Asian lady though was the first time I think he harmed someone that hadn't 'crossed' him in some way

In Lester's defense, he had no way of knowing that Malvo was going to kill Hess because of the conversation in the hospital or that he would immediately pull out a gun and shoot those three people in the elevator.

Question though, why didn't Malvo kill Lester in the elevator? He obviously had a clear shot or could have shot him when he was running away. He had the intent to kill him, that is why he went back to Bimidji. Maybe he actually went back to kill his wife/family to see if he could actually make Lester feel guilty or something? He could have just known that was Linda and not Lester that came into the insurance shop.

Also, sidenote, Malvo mentioned that he had been working the dentist for 6 months to track down the witness protection guy. So Malvo's been working as a successful and convincing dentist for those 6 months -- that isn't the type of job that you can just kind of pick up on the fly. Dentists have like 8 years of schooling or something, right?

I was wondering about that too. Maybe he thought Lester was naive enough to help him move the bodies, the way Dennis Reynolds was naive enough to just help him out, even after being locked up in the closet

I was also wondering what Lester was even thinking he was being asked when Malvo was doing the "Yes or No" thing in the elevator...and why Lester was so intent on dealing with him at all. His life was in perfect order from getting the award and having the new non-bitchy wife, etc

Malvo loves to toy with people and Lester had no real power to harm Malvo. Malvo knew too much about Lester. The other 3 people could easily turn Malvo in to the cops or make his life hard somehow. I think before Lester hit him, Malvo planned to toy with Lester and get his $100k worth of enjoyment out of him and then maybe kill him. Once Lester hit him, Malvo had to kill him for his personal "code".

I'm surprised more people arent keying on the scene where Malvo listens to his tapes of manipulating a completely different person.

Also, as to being a dentist, he was also a preacher for awhile. His ability to perform these tasks is either more evidence that he is the trope of psycopathic genius, ie Hannibal Lecter, or evidence for the supernatural for those looking for that route.

Being a preacher though, that is something that someone as smart as him can pull off. He could get by on that just through being able to talk to people well and manipulate them. Being a dentist is a skill that requires a lot of skill, practice, and schooling.
