My father in law gave me his old s10 and every year he had to put r134a in it. I did it this year and it doesn't seem to stick. Following your advice in an old thread I just don't want to cram all in the system and then give it to a repair guy. I guess it has a leak somewhere. I don't know where.

I know it won't be "cheap." But I'm looking for a good mechanic to work on it for a reasonable price.

Thoughts/other recommendations?

Its a leak, it doesnt just evaporate in a closed system. You probably got oil sludge and stains already all around/under the engine but if you check the main AC components you can trace down the lines to see where any is obviously leaking out. May have to pay for a small fill-up to do that, preferably with some dye to easily mark the leaking area. If you find a crack or hole in an AC line you might luck out for cheap as I've seen good results with alumiweld, especially if the mechanic has used it before. Being a relatively common truck you're cheapest option once you find the culprit is a junkyard for parts.
