Bush told people to buy duct tape and plastic to cover their homes to stop anthrax. I guess there's a break point of inducing senseless panic, and trying to keep people calm, and at this point there's no reason to induce panic, or for anyone to panic.

The CDC and the hospital screwed up with how they handled the initial case-- i think this is pretty clear. But this is behind us now, and the gov. should be saying very mild things, to keep people off their hair triggers.

bullshit, it was you trying to blame Obama. You are even doing it still in this post, calling it overconfidence.

Saying that an Ebola outbreak in the US is "highly unlikely" is not overconfidence, it's absolutely correct

If the person were actually at risk for having ebola, they're putting the entire ship at risk by not allowing the airlift.

that ship needs to dock in an american harbor and the passengers be allowed to disembark with no screening.

No, they should be screened, so the CDC can look like they're actually doing their job. They should just let them all go with low-grade fevers.

^^ our handling of isis hasn't been bad. The administration clearly has been working behind the scenes to garner support in the region, and has put pressure publicly on the countries in the rain to claim a stake in Fighting isis, and this seems to be working.

We could have probably gotten quicker reSults by using our own ground troops, but we'll get stabler results by making our allies in the region step up. I think this philosophy on the middle east is superior to the neocon strategy of nation building, world policing, and heavy handed intervention. It has a bigger potential to collapse, but it has a bigger potential to end up with a stronger stable system too.

Another infection in New York City. A doctor that returned from Africa on October 17, clearly having worn full protective gear yet became infected anyway. Instead of isolating himself at home as agreed, he visited a bowling alley, rode the subway, and rode in taxis, even after feeling ill.

I'm not too concerned either, but I swear, these medical professionals should know better. It pisses me off that they put everybody else at risk. They choose to go over to that cesspool of a continent and try to do some good, so they should understand the consequences.

Maybe they do and just don't care? It seems like in some cases, you might not know your sick and then things go from good to bad to worse pretty quickly. That could put people around you at risk. Why take the chance. Stay away from anybody you don't have to be in contact with for the 21 days and then be done with it.

Or don't go to an ebola zone.

Here is my best attempt at a salisburyboy post:

That is a leap from what I was implying.

Don't go and fight ebola if you don't want to quarantine yourself for the 21 day duration when you come back to your home country. Is that better? You seem intelligent sometimes, didn't know I had to spell it out for ya.

If self-monitoring means "do whatever the hell you want to while possibly incubating ebola and only stay out of the public when you have symptoms" then maybe we need to change the rules.

Cuomo and Christie are instituting 21 day quarantines for health workers returning from the impacted areas in Africa with Ebola. The CDC is not happy:

http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/25/health/us-ebola/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

This will only discourage professionals from going to help out of blind fear, which could actually lead to further spread in the end. This is not a scientific decision when it is known one can only spread Ebola when exhibiting symptoms.

The doctor had a night out on the town hours before he was contagious. That is cutting it too close in my book. That type of quarantine is the only way to guarantee that nobody else gets sick.

it doesnt matter. theres no way you're contagious until you're sick to the point where your'e literally spewing bodily fluids. Everyone around you would know you are sick. You would have known you are sick for a long time. No one would even want to have a night out with full blown ebola.

This is completely ridiculous and I would sue the media for spreading this irrelevant information if i was one of the parties involved. Now people are avoiding the ACL trains, the gutter has shut down and I'm sure business is down at that restaurant because the public is under the impression they might contract ebola from going there.

clearly if these medical professionals keep contracting the illness, our understanding of how it spreads (or at least how to prevent it spreading) is flawed. seems like it's better to be overly-cautious than continue the status quo.

^your understanding is flawed because you are not an expert. The only real flaw is in the putting on and removing protective gear.

Everyone who contracted the virus was literally working in close contact with pools of full blown ebola shit. These were highly infectious patients that died.

It's not yet a worldwide issue, but it's got the potential to become one. Imagine how awful it would be if cases started springing up in places like Lagos or god forbid some of the cities in India or the favelas in brazil.

We probably aren't in any immediate danger here right now, but I wouldn't be shocked if we have one in some little town somewhere or on a military base when the troops we sent over there to help come back.

I would think India would be the biggest problem. Population density + the amount of people who use the Ganges for bathing, washing clothes, etc seems like it would be a massive problem.

They are not being sent to do primary care

But even if they were, and even if more than a couple people were infected, it would still just be a few cases and not an outbreak.

because I'm basing my analysis off the consensus of all of the experts. the main people who disagree are politicians who's opinion isn't qualified.

you don't have to be an expert to listen to what the experts are saying.

When you have experts having a night out on the town all over New York hours before they're contagious...yea, I really trust the experts here.

And I haven't gotten one piece of this news from Fox, so for those saying that I do, kindly refrain.
