I'm utterly awful with most computer programs or deciding what to download.

BUT:

I'd like to make a few of those nice videos where you match a song to a bunch of photos and short video clips. Most from my iPhone, etc...

Whats best? Whats free? Where do i get it? How do i use it and what easiest to learn?

iMovie should work, assuming that's all you need to do.
