in nail polish. This news story is going around all over the place so you prob have seen it on FB or elsewhere. Good to see some positive news about NCSU outside of "fellatio reduces the chance of breast cancer"

I know it'll happen because it happens in sports all the time with chemists aiming to stay ahead of the drug testers, but that would have to be an amazing conversation on development.

Black Market Drug Company CEO: "why is our ex not selling like it used to?"
Dr. Evil Henchman Lookalike: "there's a new nail polish that the cosmetics companies bought that detects date rape drugs"
Black Market Drug Company CEO: "this is disgraceful! our buyers must have faith that our product will work! how can we overcome this?"
Cross Between DC Comics C-List Doctor Villain and Someone that Would Work for Cobra Commander: "Mwahahaha! I will develop new date rape drug!"

Everyone at table does Dr. Evil laugh.

edit: Good job to the students that developed this.

Yeah, but it's still a great development. That's at least able for a girl to consciously meter and be aware of.

And will they really develop a new date rape drug? I'm assuming that rohypnol and whatever else people use are all drugs developed for legitimate uses, not like spice or whatever that's a designer drug with no other uses and shifting formulations specifically to dodge counter efforts.

there are all kinds of widely used prescription drugs that are date rape drugs, pretty much all of the anxiety medicines are when mixed with alcohol and I remember girls dropping benzo's like candy when i was in school

The latest rage here in fayettnam is drugging Soldeirs to steal their wallet. The drug: over the counter visine. We all know visine in a drink will give someone the squirts, a classic prank. But empty half the bottle in a alcoholic beverage... It will cause extreme low blood pressure, passing out when you stand up, and wallet = gone. Then the squirts for salt in the wound.

It takes more than nail polish, stay vigilant.

People just don't like options. You give people options and the fanatical ones will miss the point and find the negative in something that offers a positive perspective. I hate humans.

Yes! If the guy who put roofies in your drink is hot as fuck, the nail polish turns bright red. Otherwise it will just turn clear.

yeah, I never understood why some of the girls I knew in college were scared of someone slipping a date rape drug in their drink but would willingly consume drugs like benzos, ketamine, and GHB while drinking.

Because the women's lobby has been publishing ginned up statistics and claims for the last 25 years to convince American women that our colleges are rapeatoriums? Maybe it's that.

...Or we could actually fix the fucked up systemic misogyny and sexism that leads to date rape. But this is TWW. Never mind.

Gg to the students who figured out the drug though.

Why can't we work on eliminating rape culture while also having this available for women to protect themselves? It doesn't have to be either or.

We can do both. That's the point. It's not a mutually exclusive issue.

Nobody is saying that this is the end all, be all. But it's progress.

I roll my eyes every time someone says or types "rape culture."

As the last two posters have correctly pointed out, you can work towards building a more egalitarian society, eliminate "slut shaming", and actual victim blaming while still also doing things like teaching women to be aware of their surroundings and encouraging them to learn self defense.

All the "teaching men not to rape" in the world won't eliminate rapists. They will always be out there, just as there will always be thieves, murderers, etc. Taking responsibility for your own safety is very important, and providing tools to do so is not the same as encouraging violence.

Lock your doors, don't leave your laptop sitting on the passenger seat, don't walk around alone in bad parts of a city, learn some self defense. In a perfect world none of this would be necessary, but we don't live in a perfect world nor will we ever.

^^ great post.

It's a damn shame that people don't see this as a positive. Of course this isn't the solution. But it's a step in the right direction, and that's great.

Fortunately most people do see it as a positive, but there's a distinct subset of the population who see anything other than their utopia as unacceptable and an impediment towards progress.

As the quote goes, don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

eleusis, the key word is "consent" (and a related one is "awareness"): There's a major difference between getting krunked up willingly and getting roofied against your will

also I was about to post this image in Chit-Chat but it fits better ITT

I found it here: https://www.facebook.com/BigDandBubba/photos/a.10150328520357943.368684.49741532942/10152666907167943/?type=1

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2014/08/29/what-was-fake-on-the-internet-this-week-date-rape-nail-polish-two-moons-and-the-return-of-breaking-bad/

Quote :
"Here’s what was fake on the Internet this week:

1. Nail polish can’t actually prevent date-rape. The media, social and otherwise, cheered the invention of an “anti-date rape” nail polish at North Carolina State University, where students claimed their polish would change colors when exposed to common date rape drugs. Unfortunately, the “claim” is … just that. As my colleague Gail Sullivan noted in the Morning Mix, the vast majority of date rapes don’t involve the four drugs the nail polish detects. More problematic? In many a laboratory study, the chemical test used by the new polish often fails to detect the drugs in question, while turning up false positives for lots of other benign things. That makes the date rape polish a great headline, but a more or less useless tool. “We like simple fixes,” writes the drug columnist at Animal New York — but this one, alas, is “a false panacea.”"

Still, it's a good idea...maybe it'll spur more ideas like it and improvements can be made.

It's a pretty useless product even if it works; the vast majority of date rapes involve just alcohol.

And to add fuel to the fire, I'd wager a majority of those the man is also intoxicated. Which is somehow irrelevant.

[Edited on September 3, 2014 at 11:01 AM. Reason : maybe not a vast majority]
