It's actually a misnomer. Back in the day the you actually had to pump or crank the machine to make the gas flow. For the last ___ decades, the fuel dispenser pumps it for you.

Yeah

Kinda like saying "crank the car". You don't crank anything anymore...you turn a key or push a button. But I still say it and have for my whole life.
