I need someone to run CAT 5 in my house. It's 2 stories, plus attic and crawlspace. Want someone with a bit of experience. Also will take recommendations for low-voltage electricians.

I can terminate the cables myself, and have access to a Fluke CableIQ to test them.

I looked through previous threads and people recommended Snewf. I PM'd but haven't received a response.

^Huh? Would you suggest CAT 6? By the time I need 10 Gb, I'd probably also run fiber for a SAN.

I did mean CAT 5/e, btw. Does anyone still use regular CAT 5 anymore?

Yeah that was the point.

And I can't imagine Cat 5e is much cheaper than 6, if at all, but I haven't checked prices.

CAT6 is the same as 5e at least from my vendor. Either that or the material cost is negligible. They would run the 5e the same as they would the 6 in terms of using a j-hook pathway and well not tying knots in it and stuff so the labor is the same as well. YMMV I'm sure you can find someone on the cheap to run some Sewell Direct 5e at 80/box and not have any issues with it.

^^^/^^. I think I may have mistakenly seen the price for plenum-rated CAT 6 and compared it to CAT 5/e. Looking now, the price doesn't seem to be that different.

Any suggestions for installers ? I could run it on main level, going through crawl, but there's no closet space on main level for a network closet/PP. Going to the second level would make it a lot harder, especially if there are fire breaks. This is my first home, and we only closed in May. At that time, I'd never even used a power drill before. I've since put up some cabinets and crown, but don't feel comfortable doing this.

^ cat 5/e is much cheaper to run than cat 6. i just built a house and even though i sprung for cat6, it cost an extra $100/run.

and i'm not really sure what's significant about me mentioning you in a grand total of 5 of my posts, other than the fact that we both used to like sony ericsson phones.

specter you got raped dude...

cat 6 costs about $120 for 1000 ft
cat 5e costs about half that.

cat 6 is the better cable by far i wouldn't install cat 5e. cat 5e has a lot of packet loss at gigabit speeds over long runs.

cat 7a is individually shielded twisted pairs and is epic but costs $600-700 bucks for 1000 ft.
but at that level i'd be considering fiber optic anyway...

I must be the only one who misread the title to think that he was trying to start some feline exercise regimen in his house.
