would roughly 10-12% translate definitely to 2-20%?

what % buffer does roughly provide?

I only said that since I couldn't remember off the top of my head the approximate percentage.

Quote :
"Does Thunder Signal a Coming Snow?

Along with a diverse variety of frozen precipitation, it's not unusual to see a thunderstorm during the winter in North Carolina. At some point, that gave rise to the proverb that if you hear thunder during the winter, it will snow in 7 to 10 days. It makes some sense considering that weather systems generally take about a week to move across the country, so a strong cold front that produces thunderstorms is likely to be followed by another system within the next 10 days. But here in North Carolina, where snow is never a guarantee, how often is thunder followed by flakes?

To find out, we first looked up all reports of thunderstorms or lightning between December and March from six long-term weather stations (in Asheville, Greensboro, Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Hatteras) with hourly records. Since their records began in the late 1940s, there have been 642 wintertime days on which thunderstorms or lightning were observed. In 85 of those cases, or about 13% of the time, snow was observed 7 to 10 days later. This amounts to about a 1 in 7 chance, which is far from a sure thing."

scarf, hat, gloves and pea coat make it easy to shrug off this cold weather.

I'm starting to get depressed that we won't be having much of a snowy (comparatively speaking) winter here in NC

I still love snow days. Maybe because I have no shitty kids to worry about. I'm not above going out and sledding down a good hill.

Even better is prepping beforehand for a snowstorm. Snow is an excuse for good booze and junk food, and possibly treating a work-night as a weekend night.

In other words, fuck off, I still love snow.

Snow in NC is great.

It snows, I get to work from home. I have no kids, thus it is wonderful.

If you live up north, it snows you just go to work and deal with it.

So yes, I love snow in NC.

Not that it happens that often in Colorado but snow days are the best because it means you can hit up the mountains.

Tuesday night / Wednesday morning could be interesting as far as freezing rain.

Looks like cold air will be here but question is the amount of moisture... could have .1" of freezing rain which could cause some problems..

I had fun the last time we got a snowpocalypse. I walked home from work at lunch after the buses shutdown. It was a blast and I got lots of great photos around campus and on Franklin Street. Then I got to spend the next couple of days playing in the snow with my kids. It was fun.

I'm not leaving the house once I get home from work. General clusterfuck traffic pre-storm and of course a shitshow once it gets going.

The first thing I would worry about would be the PNC arena parking lot freezing and grid locking traffic much like what the 2/10" ice did to cars sitting in traffic in Raleigh back when the city gridlocked.

WRAL and WTVD just backed way off their predictions. Says it won't be below freezing really until after midnight, but to still exercise caution if you are out and about. Should be ok tonight but a little icey in the morning hours.

Yeah seems everything shifted East and dried up, haha. Typical Raleigh force field.

They were saying everything was going to be east anyway. That said they also said south (Fayetteville/sanford) and its looking like north right now. Wake Forest area is reporting frozen precip right now as well as ice accumulation.

Non event. Drove into work and all the roads were just fine. Only annoyance was scraping off the ice on my car windows.

Sure, it was a bust for QPF. But it doesn't take much more than freezing drizzle to make an impact. All the pics of wrecks I've seen on Twitter certainly make this an event.

That is normal for anytime it rains it seems. Turns out all it takes is a little rain for people to turn into morons when it comes to driving.

+1

Some of the weather boards I lurk are saying the next month could be interesting winter weather-wise so at least there's something to look out for.

12z run of the GFS ushered in the upgraded version of the operational GFS. This is what it shows for next Fri (with it being 200+ hrs out, it'll obviously change):

No one wants any fucking snow on a weekend. If its gonna winter weather it needs to happen overnight on a workday so that I dont have to goto work and I dont have to fight getting home in the shit like last year.
