Like there was probably a ship just sitting there and they could've flown it to the other side of the planet and then hyperspaced out of there before they left the atmosphere just like they did on jedha but I guess dying was preferable

On Jedha they already had a ship and barely made it out, with a droid flying precisely.

They were never allowed to make it out because this story was written with a future that had already happened. In that future they were dead.

Back when reviews from the premiere came out a few of the people on collider videos recommended that the book Catalyst be read before seeing rogue one. It follows the events of the main characters leading up to rogue one. I

I saw Rogue One twice and decides to download the book having nothing else on my radar. I've gotten through several chapters and went to see it a 3rd time.

Going forward they are likely to release books related to new movies. I highly recommend them. Just part way into a book and I already care about the characters way way more. It's really affective

^^No. Just friends. If you are reading any kind of weird sexual tension, then I think you're wanting it to be there.

I am curious though, I've seen a few headlines saying some Trump fans are boycotting the movie. How in the hell are people pulling politics from Rogue One? Who is supposed to be Trump here? There are no characters for which I saw any correlation.

On a side note, if they plan on any of the ancillary movies having the emperor, they need to go ahead and file the parts before McDermitt kicks the bucket.

I mean Chirrut was given almost no backstory, and Baze/their relationship even less, so if people are reading into their relationship its b/c thats the only choice they have.

Maybe i wasnt paying enough attention but i got that chirrut was some kind of monk at the temple and Baze was his friend/protector. No story as to why they were that close or what Baze's deal was at all.

Also saw a tweet that said it was interesting the rebels purged most of their women and POC b/w Rogue and Hope

It's because of some stupid comments made by the screen writer on twitter. The "boycott" isn't a thing, it's just a dumb response from butt hurt basement dwellers to some virtue signaling nonsense from a guy who wrote a mediocre script.

Do the people complaining about the technology in Rogue One really not get the conscious decision to make things look like they did in ANH in 1977? In the prequels Lucas wanted everything to look slick and modern because he had all this new CGI technology etc. which ended up making them look totally out of place compared to the Star Wars movies we had seen already. I love that they made this movie look like it was original trilogy film

^^^i wasn't criticizing. i don't think it's a negative at all. i just thought it was cool/interesting. figured i'd point it out for anyone who didn't notice. most of the weapons in the original trilogy were doctored up prop gun versions of real firearms and rogue one followed suit.

The vader part at the end was the best star wars scene in decades

Movies are better when the villains are strong.

I do think the trailers made this look better than it actually was. I think it was too heavily plotted and didn't give time to make the characterizations sink it. It was just get the key, open the door all the way, like a video game.

I kinda wish star wars were a smarter series. For example, this one could have had more mystery in trying to find the plans. But instead, we knew exactly what had to be done the entire movie.

Agree on everything. Very much "complete objective, loading next level" feel to it.

Though these movies will never be too smart ever again. Too much money to be made.

Would be cool to see a star wars movie with the feel of Homeland or Syriana where there is constant tension and you dont know whats going to happen, and some quality of the characters allows them to succeed.

And how about an action scene thats like the awesome one in True Detective? I fall asleep during action scenes nowadays.

Please elaborate. When were these movies "smart" to begin with. Have you listened to the dialogue in ANH? These movies are a lot of things, one being very enjoyable. But smart? I don't think smart was ever in the cards here. If you want smart go watch Star Trek TOS or something.

Ok, I'm not crazy. Many of the scenes in the trailer were cut from the movie. And the movie had a lot of reshoots

The trailer made it seem like Jyn and her crew ere going to be a bunch of hell raisers and saw was going to be a big deal in the movie. I wanted to see that movie

^^It is pretty interesting how much they changed. From the trailers, you see Jyn and Cassian actually escaping the beach with the plans. Also, it looks like K2SO survived the data bank in the trailers.

Of all the characters in this one, K2SO is the one I wish we could have seen make it through.

Just got back from watching Rogue One.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but the whole timeline seems off. I find it hard to believe that Anakin became Vader and 19 years later comes Luke.

Rogue One made it seem the Jedi has been gone forever.

Nineteen years is a long time. Nineteen years ago, it was 1998. Look how different life is now on this single planet versus 1998, and imagine how much can change and happen in a whole galaxy in that time.

Let me break down the Jedi thing for you in, like, three easy pieces using only elements from the films.

The Jedi, though they were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic for a thousand generations, were ascetics who eschewed relationships and operated from an ivory tower position in the seat of galactic government. They were not of the people.

See, the life of a Jedi starts in childhood. You're separated from your family and discouraged from keeping in touch with them. You're brought up in isolation from all but your fellow Padawan learners. Your one meaningful relationship is with your Master--no real friends, no cousins, no boyfriends nor girlfriends, not even a pet.

This means that right out the gate, almost no one actually knows a single Jedi personally. Sure, there are people who have a working relationship with Jedi, professional acquaintances, but they're few and mostly on Coruscant. Do you have any idea how many people there are in the Star Wars galaxy?

So just keep that in mind first: Very, very, very few people ever even encountered a Jedi, and fewer still actually had any personal connection to them.

Another thing to keep in mind: The prequels showed us that every living Jedi fought in the Clone Wars. For three years, every living Jedi was engaged in a war that was largely fought between clones and droids. They were not in the public eye. They were on remote, hostile planets of strategic value, and for the most part, they were removed from all interactions with "real" people. With Order 66, those Jedi were wiped out in secret all at once. The two survivors we know of went into exile.

Now, as we saw in Rogue One, the Empire was engaged in a campaign of damnatio memoriae against the Jedi. They weren't just looting that temple on Jedha--they were looting and destroying Jedi holy sites across the galaxy, wiping out the remnants that survived the Jedi, wiping out tangible reminders of their existence.

Most people never knew a Jedi. Most people never saw a Jedi. Most people will never have the opportunity to learn anything about the Jedi from what the Jedi left behind. Palpatine was able to remove an entire planet from the archives of the Jedi themselves, so there's no question in my mind that he'd be able to suppress the Jedi completely from whatever historical databases you care to imagine.

It's not like they vanished from living memory. Characters in the films are sort of vaguely aware that the Jedi existed and used the Force and wielded lightsabers, after all. But they are nigh mythical figures who may as well never have existed at all from the standpoint of most people in the galaxy. You don't have organizations dedicated to preserving their memory, you don't have Jedi museums, you don't have books and movies and video games showcasing their exploits. They just stopped being all of a sudden one day, and they'd hardly been there at all for anyone not on Coruscant.

^fantastic.

The culture of the Empire was one to see the Jedi as one of the reasons the galactic war started. So a fraction of the very few that remember them will remember them as a good force.

The good they did was largely never seen in the public eye. They didn't have publicists.

Viewed in a context ANH was ahead of its time. Have you watched movies from the 70s and 80s? They weren't exactly mindbenders.

I really enjoyed this one...in fact, found it to be a better story than TFA. Much of it was very well done. The last 1/3 or so is some of the best stuff in the entire franchise.

I was thinking this. In a video game, you are the main character, and rarely is significant backstory or emotion really given. Except for the Force Unleashed game...that story had much more raw emotion and purpose, and the main character seemed to have a real drive to him. I would love to see that story as a movie (Vader's secret apprentice helping to start the rebel alliance), much more than we needed to have this one.

That being said, I was still entertained by this movie. I wish it had a slower pace so we got to know these characters and cared that they were all dying, but the effects were cool and I didn't mind the fan service as much (the easter eggs were more obvious than in TFA, but much less frequent).

Reading this article, it's not hard to see why so many trailer scenes are missing in the movie. They more or less filmed everything then "made" the movie during editing. Although the way people talk this sort of thing is fairly common.

I kinda feel the same way when I hear an actor let their southern accent show, in a movie that isn't supposed to be taking place down south. Like Sweet Home Alabama - that movie doesn't count because everyone is supposed to have an accent.

But it isn't just accents from different languages that get washed out. Radio people who have had a strong northern accent have also been coached to sound more neutral. Oh well.

As a Star Wars n00b, I didn't think this one was nearly as good as TFA. I pre-ordered TFA as soon as I left the theater. This one, my wife and I were just left wondering "what happened with this one?"

All the characters were meh, other than Cassian. It was cool to see a darker side of the rebels, and I like the actor from other movies. I didn't care for Jane at all. Android was awesome.

The quest for Forest Whitaker was pretty damn dull. I was just waiting for the next development during the Jedha stuff.

I'm kind of disappointed in Chirrut not having a more serious and/or badass role. Hitting storm troopers with a stick isn't really that satisfying.

Quote :
"For the one on Jedha it makes the universe feel smaller rather than larger"

+1

It was a fight in a town square.. The Empire should have squashed that shit. There's a damn Star Destroyer hovering overhead.

Galen Erso's death scene evoked zero emotion since there was zero development of the father-daughter relationship. Made the scientists' planet a huge waste of time for me.

AT-AT's patrolling the equivalent of the Palm Tree islands in Dubai. HA! Fan service

As a nOOb, I didn't know the Tarkin fellow was from ANH. I didn't realize he was CGI at all.

I think at some point, Vader or some other Empire guy is standing in an bay open to outer space, looking down on a planet or maybe a ship. HA!

The massive space fight at the end was more mind-numbing than exciting. It's too much. Like trying to watch a Michael Bay Transformers end fight but falling asleep instead. The hammerhead ship dropping the Star Destroyers was cool. 100 Tie fighters buzzing around? Not so much.
