Any entomologists on here?

If so what do you think of my anti-mosquito system detailed here?

my coworker has a PhD in Entomology from State, if you summarize that thread I'll ask her about it.

Quote :
"Does anyone think it might be helpful to actually create sources of treated standing water for mosquitos to breed in? The idea being that they breed in toxic water I set out for them instead of other clean sources of standing water/tree bark/dead wood/etc?

Last year I set out 4 1-2 gallon containers of water treated with Mosquito Dunks around my house (this year I did more like 8). I'm hoping some of those little assholes will breed there instead of clean sources of water. We'll see...

Something like 1/4 of a dunk per 1-2 gallon bucket. There are instructions on the back...think I went a little strong

This is the product: http://www.lowes.com/pd_92460-1643-MODU1_0__?productId=3047384

The bottom of one of my buckets after a month or two: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3922/14698923896_55771bb334_b.jpg

Any chance this is doing any good?"

Assuming 1) a female mosquito lays eggs 10ish times in her lifetime, and 2) those dunks actually work...this has be be helping some, right?

...or you can start breeding dunk-resistant populations of mosquitos.

I have an MS in entomology from state..... for that person's yard it may be beneficial, and would probably cut down on mosquitoes. This will not prevent mosquitoes from reproducing in the clean water found elsewhere either in your neighbors yard or in you own yard. Mosquitoes can detect their host from a far distance, so I am not sure if they will be able to put an end to mosquitoes in that part of the neighborhood

Surprisingly, even after decade of use, no consistent resistance has been detected even after long periods of repeated treatment with Bti toxins but recent studies have suggested that moderate Bti toxin resistance may occur locally.

hardly matters since they can reproduce in very small amounts of water... smaller than the dunk, for example... so wild types are everywhere

^ yes, there will always be enough standing water somewhere for a mosquito to live in. The best thing you can do is to get rid of anything that can hold standing water like bird baths etc

empty those plant saucers and make sure there isn't a bucket under your deck, etc

[Edited on June 23, 2015 at 3:12 PM. Reason : don't get rid of your bird baths, just clean them 2x a week ]
