I am really looking at the $50 tablet. I am not all that into tablets, but I would like a small decent tablet for travelling. I think this could serve the purpose of email, Youtube, web browsing, and playing some Hearthstone.

So far I can't find anything better for the price. If you can find anything better at this price point let me know. I'm in the market for a tablet, but it doesn't have the be the greatest in terms of hardware.

The screen resolution of all the new Fire tablets seems lacking.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I might still spring for it since its only $50 and only the screen saver has the special offers.

Unless you choose Prime apparently, its 2 days after the release. According to the site.

I'm a Prime member.

Step your game up Twista.

And, you still have time to get the Mile High Club achievement in COD4 haha.

If I use it for nothing other than watching YouTube videos on the shitter, it'll be worth it.

OK, the display is alright. Not too bad, but for $50 you cant complain.

Its snappy enough and light enough.

I just don't like the way the home screen is setup, but its not awful by any means, just more of a pet peeve.

And the storage is expandable to 128 gb.

You can get some apps on it from the Google Play store by this method

http://www.gizmag.com/how-to-install-google-apps-kindle-fire-hd-hdx/30736/

Basically its well worth $50.

sounds like that could be simplified by just allowing installs from unknown sources and then downloading .APK files directly to the device from the web. Or am I missing something?

I just installed Hangouts and it works fine

You can get anything from the Google Play store as long as you install the few Google APK files from above. It's pretty simple to do. Took me all of like 5-10 minutes.

No problem. While I'd love to root it and have it fully Android and get rid of some of the Amazon stuff, I'm content for now just keeping it on the one main home screen and using it as a 7" Android tablet

Now that Amazon has rolled out its services to non-Fire devices, ignoring price, is there anything other that the Kindle Lending Library that you can't get on a non-Amazon tablet?

Got mine Sunday...

Really do like it, it's the perfect size really.

Seems durable. The cameras suck though from what I can tell.

Both cameras definitely suck. And the touch screen accuracy / "touches per square inch" is subpar compared to other tablets. But it's still a great device for the money.

Battery life is great too. I've had mine unplugged for the last 3-4 days and it's got 61% battery life at the moment, though I haven't really used it much in that time. But still, for $50 it's a great deal

a new system update to (Android) 5.0 automatically installed. Didn't affect any of the sideloaded stuff though

^ thanks for the google play link. Finally managed to get Chrome and some others. Has anyone had any luck setting up a different launcher or home screen as the default? I can get Nova Launcher to work but pushing the circle/home button just takes me to stock Fire home.

I just leave it on the home screen and create different folders for icons so I don't need multiple home pages.

[Edited on November 2, 2015 at 12:14 AM. Reason : just long press and drag an icon on top of another icon to create a folder]

Picked up one of the new 7 inches for the $35 sale on Thanksgiving. I gotta say for that pricepoint, I'm really impressed.

Had some color issue where everything looked too bright. Not the brightness itself, but the hue. Powered off and on and it fixed it so was apparently software related but it was odd. Probably had the device on for a week or more straight so who knows what I did.

opinions wanted:

current promotion for 25% off some of their Fire devices if you check out with your Amazon card. I also have a $50 gift card. I've been considering a 2013 Nexus 7 (since I have no idea when the next N7 will be out). However, the Fire HD 8 is looking fairly tempting at 25% off. It's $97 and I would probably boost the 8GB of store with either an additional 16 or 32 card for $15-20.

Any thoughts on the Fire HD 8 vs a 2 year old N7?

Battery life has been great. Still not 100% satisfied with the touch accuracy/sensitivity, but it works well enough. Well worth the $50.

I also bought a keyboard/protector thing and I really like it, I'm wondering now about connecting a bluetooth mouse and having a full fledged Cloud based PC.

for a week or two, none of my Supercell apps would load. Now they all do. I expected the Google Play Games update to permanently prevent them, but it looks like they're good to go again.
