Anybody getting a Gear VR tomorrow?

I have an S6 Edge, so I was like, "what the hell, amirite?". Anytime this type of shit hot gadget comes out I can't resist most of the time. The price point on this piece of garbage is what got me. Plus I want to ride up to the top of The Wall in one of those rickety ass elevators as soon as possible.

Atleast it got a pretty solid 9/10: [link]https://web.archive.org/web/20151119143330/http://www.wired.com/2015/11/review-samsung-gear-vr/[/link]

Why would you think that? I dont see "google" or "cardboard" anywhere in the title. Silly Goose.

This is a far superior product to that april fools joke cardboard thing. If Cardboard is a tricycle, the Gear Vr is a motorcycle.

Another top notch review: http://fortune.com/2015/11/20/gear-vr-review/

Quote :
"Google Cardboard uses your phone’s accelerometer to track your head movements, so that when you turn your line of sight to the right or left the screen follows along, and shows you 360 degrees around you at anytime. However, the Gear VR has its own built-in motion sensor, which is more finely tuned. The result is significantly smoother head tracking, which means the experience is far less likely to make you sick."

Just one of the reasons there is no comparison.

Yeah I read a few things about how the experience is night and day because input lag (in this case your head) can make or break VR. Unfortunately I no longer have a Samsung phone otherwise I'd pick one of these up.

With that being said I'll probably still wait for Oculus in 2016 as this one still has a lot of shortcomings for a $99 device:

http://www.theverge.com/2015/11/20/9768104/samsung-gear-vr-hands-on

Quote :
"Like almost all mobile VR headsets, this one is low resolution enough to have a slight "screen door" effect. I often noticed the edges of the lens and interior of the headset, bits of light creeping in from outside or reflecting brightly off the lenses — little things that prevented the image from being totally immersive."

Quote :
"After maybe 40 minutes of gaming, I noticed my forehead beginning to get sweaty from the heat of the screen, the bridge of my nose aching. VR is funny that way. I didn’t find the headset too heavy, but its physical, visceral effects came at a cost. Each half-hour session left me with a slight headache and disorientation that bordered on nausea."

Selling out can mean many different things. Unless they provide volumes it could simply mean they didn't make a lot in the first place not anticipating the popularity. Same thing happened with the Surface Book selling out. Doesn't mean it's not a bad item but seeing a headline with "sold out" really doesn't mean much unless they provide volumes.

Yes, i got it last night actually. I haven't had as much time as i'd like to play with it, but here are my first impressions.

-Initially, I was pretty disappointed in the resolution. I was totally deflated, and didn't think I would be able to experience the "immersion" factor which is what is so alluring about VR tech due to it being a little blurry around the edges. HOWEVER, after accepting and getting use it, I found myself getting immersed in certain apps, and I currently enjoy using the device a lot.

The Ocean apps, which have you sitting at the bottom of the sea with sharks and sea turtles swimming about, was amazing. I ducked when sharks swam over my head. I recoiled in fear when a giant whale suddenly appeared out of the darkness, and began swimming towards me. It was awesome, and was the experience i was hoping to have as far as immersion goes.

The Netflix app was also surprisingly immersive. I was laying in bed using it, and it felt like i was sitting on a couch in an expensive mountain house watching netflix on a 110" screen. Was really cool.

Then I tried an app where you take a guided tour of the solar system. This was awesome. It does an amazing job of making you feel tiny. It was scary flying straight up against the sun. Its just so massive. yikes.

To sum up, early on I was a little let down by the resolution, however once you get use to it, and kind of accept it as your "reality", it really is an awesome immersive experience on the cheap.

It was perfect for me, because I don't intend on buying the first generation of VR tech coming out early next year, (will probs wait until the 2nd generation to see which is the stronger ecosystem), so getting to have a little VR experience now will make the wait more bearable.

Isn't the resolution dependant on the phone you're using as it just magnifies the phone screen?

Picked one of these up with my new phone. I will say it's so worth the $99. Really cool experience.

Just converted some 3d side-by-side movies to play on the VR. Watched the first 30 minutes of the Martian in 3d last night. Was pretty awesome. DTS isn't supported through Oculus VR yet (licensing issues) so if you have any ripped .mkv videos you just need to convert the audio to mp3. Found this easy guide:

Anyone have a bluetooth controller? All the recommended ones are out of stock everywhere. Ordered one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FB5RBJM

As it seems to have the best overall reviews for an Android bluetooth controller that works well with Gear VR.

Picked up a Moga Pro Power and checked out the free Herobound game (First Steps). It's pretty awesome. Was immediately hooked. Really looking forward to more games coming out for this thing.

Also Smash Hit is incredibly fun on Gear VR. Some of the later levels get crazy.

The S2 has gotten great reviews but I would get the Gear VR instead. It's a steal for $99 and awesome.

Obviously check out all the Oculus app store apps. There's a bunch of great ones. If you want to use cardboard apps with it you'll need to stop the Oculus service from running when you plug in the phone to the headset. I haven't felt the need to try it yet but there are a bunch of guides online.

Played this for about 3 hours last night. This is by far one of the best if not the best VR experience (Anshar Wars 2 multi-player is up there) for the Gear VR. I was a little nauseous at first using the 1st person mode but it wore off pretty quickly. Make sure to turn on "3d rendering" otherwise it's 2d VR. The draw distance is a little low but when you're mining it's not a huge deal.
