Went over there for a bit just to check out the building. It's really, really nice. Pre-scrimmage lighting was cool, too.

I was under one of the AC/heating vents and it was incredibly loud. I hope that's an anomaly or something they can dampen, because it was clearly audible above the music/crowd/etc.

idk, but if he were like 3 inches taller he mightve been a big time recruit.

I watched his H.S highlight vid a while back and was like "goddamn, that guy is an amazing pure shooter" just a pretty, consistent shot.

But I was like, hey, its a highlight vid right? And its a lower level Alabama hs division. So i mean, they arent gonna show the misses. You can make an amazing highlight vid of anyone raining 3s with enough attempts.

But then when he went what 3/3? with that same pretty, consistent shot Friday, I was like "oh fuck, maybe this could translate".

Now sure, we werent playing defense much, but man a deadeye 3pt shooter gets me hard.

Anyway, file this under the new Patrick Wallace, bench guy, white, 3pt shooter hype train. Hoping Spencer can be a level above that though. I think he is a bit bigger. Will have to wait and see if we get a glimpse of his athletic potential and defensive ability.

yeah he came as a preferred walk on and will have a chance to earn a scholarship...so he's definitely a step above other walk ons. i just meant, it's probably a year away from him getting any real PT with the guard position fairly loaded this year.

Yea, youre right, I dont think the shot will be there. But idk if Im sold on us having a $$ 3pt shooter. You know, like a Scott Wood, who if he got open, he was making the shot, no matter how deep it was.

I mean, of course Im optimistic about Rowans progression as a player, and Im excited to see what Terry can do from outside, but I feel like we have several good 3pt shooters and man it would be nice to have another Wood level guy.

And biggest problem with Newmans chance of being that is he isnt a forward

The good thing about Mav is that he seems like a more versatile scorer than Turner or Wood. But obviously not as much as a pure shooter as either. He can just score in more ways.

I don't know if this a joke or not but Newman will never play on this team except for garbage minutes with Gott Jr and Corch Jr.

Ted Kapita looks the part tho.

^^^right, we're all saying Newman won't get anything more than garbage time this year. but as he progresses, he actually has potential to earn a scholarship and get real PT as an upper classmen. this isn't some "jevoni robinson is the best player on the team" shit. we knew when he committed that he was a step above your regular walkons like Corch Jr. he had an offer from Ok St at one point when Butch Pierre was there...he's not a total scrub.

^^ I think a have a complex now that if he doesnt get any PT, he will transfer, and I dont want that to happen.

But I think winning fixes that for the most part I guess. Players will sit as long as they feel the guy ahead of them is better I suppose.

The only player I could see having any issues this season with PT to the point of considering transferring would be Mav. Hard to take a highly-recruited kid, give him a ton of minutes, then have him come off the bench.

DSJ - going pro, doesn't matter
Yurt - going pro, doesn't matter
Abu - going pro, doesn't matter
Anya - graduating
Henderson - graduating(unless he gets 6th year)
Markell - knows he's #2 PG
Dorn - already sat out a year, will get minutes, not transferring
Freeman -redshirting
Kapita - knows he's coming off the bench if he's eligible
Hicks - knows he'll have very limited minutes behind 3 players likely leaving

Obviously if Gott pisses any of these young guys off it could change, but I think they understand their roles coming into the season.

Mav will either start or be the first off the bench. And he can play positions 2-4...so he'll get a ton of minutes. Probably 25-30 a game.

i for one am excited about Mav...but i know many others are less than enthused about him. in part, i think he was thrust into a role last year that he wasn't ready for. hopefully he'll simply be better this year, but also in a role better suited for him with less pressure to be the guy to knock down all the 3s.

also ^^^^^ you left out Kirk...who, imo, is the only legit threat to transfer and even then i think he'd be transferring down a level. but then again something unexpected always happens.

I like Mav, I'm just curious to see where he fits in the equation. I know he's versatile offensively, but will be a liability defensively? Will he be able to hold his own at the 4 defensively?

I thought Mav would start over Dorn but I'm hearing a ton of buzz about Dorn and how he's going to be too good to keep off the court. Now the buzz is that IF Yurtseven misses anytime, Mav will start at the 4. But when Yurt is back, how does that work?

If Yurt and Kapita are cleared, how much time is Mav going to see at the 4 with Abu, Yurt, Kapita, Anya, and Hicks available?
If he's not playing the 4, he's really only spelling Henderson and Dorn at the 2/3, and I do think he'll get a lot of minutes spelling those guys(and giving different looks to space the floor), but I don't think his minutes rival what he did last year when we basically had to play him because Henderson went down.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Johnson getting some time at the 2 just to get him on the court and give us another capable ball-handler, if that actually happens then it'll only eat into Mav's minutes.

I don't think he rides the bench enough to transfer, but he's the only player I could see their role taking a hit or expectations not lining up with actual minutes. We just have a really deep/talented team if everyone is cleared. If Yurt and/or Kapita aren't cleared, then yeah, we'll play small-ball and Mav will see the floor a bunch.

Mav is our best three point shooter. He's bigger and more athletic than Scott Wood. He's long enough to defend the 2 and big enough to defend the 4. Even if he's not the best defensive option at those two positions...he's absolutely creating mismatches on the offensive side if he's playing the 2 or the 4.

We have a very athletic team...but that advantage becomes smaller when we don't have someone who can hit shots and open up space. Mav is that someone.

LMAO HE IS THE WORST DEFENDER ON THE WHOLE TEAM. and his three point shooting is overrated. he wasn't the best shooter on the team last year (3rd, at best) and he won't be this year. he is too slow to guard any 2 guard in the league, so please stop saying he can play the 2. also he still can't dribble.

If Rowan is getting 30 minutes a game this season, then this season is lost because we must have been decimated by injuries. Or the coach is a moron. Ideally, Rowan is best suited for a reserve role where his defensive liabilities will be limited, but he can provide offense against other teams reserves.

Good news is that he can't be any worse at defense this year.

He's in much better shape this year -- and he's a decent athlete to begin with -- so I expect he'll be much better. He was completely lost on the defensive end last year, along with the rest of our team.

i have no idea that he shot 33% from 3 last season (32% in conference play)? that isn't the mark of a great shooter.

he routinely lost his man in transition. was constantly out of position in half court defense and was slow footed.

he was a good rebounding small forward as a freshman. maybe by growing 2 inches and adding muscle he can become a good stretch-4, but he isn't going to be able to defend a 6'4 SG on the perimeter.

I want him to be a good player, but he's not going to be Scott Wood (or Ralston Turner). Running the same plays for him that we did for them is just going to end poorly.

Just based on last year, Rowan definitely seemed like a streaky 3pt shooter. I believe expectations are Henderson will actually be our best 3pt shooter on the court this year, but it helps to have multiple shooters for spacing.

I'm fine with saying Rowan is a more athletic Scott Wood, though Wood was a better shooter, and I do expect he'll see some time at the 4 when we go with a small line-up, but I am just curious to see if he can hold up on defense. Gott and Co. are apparently preaching D this year and it's a huge point of emphasis, so if he can't hold his own on D I think he'll be coming off the bench.

Rowan's usage was way too high last year, but that was simply the result of our lack of depth, not necessarily his inability to hit a three. Just like the Martins shooting way too often, frankly someone other than Cat had to shoot the ball every now and then. This year we have way more depth, so Rowan shouldn't need to jack up so many shots. I really am looking for him to have a big year.

And Yeah, he's not a great defender, but that can be fixed. If only we had a coach who didn't hate defense.

it can be fixed by having him play 12 minutes a game instead of 33.

and please don't bitch about the martins shooting too much. they both shot better % than rowan and took less shots.

It doesn't matter how old he was. It's not like he was some jacked up 19 year old football player who roided up in the gym before getting here. He was literally cramming classes in August just so he could be admitted to State. So while all of our other players were going through pro-level conditioning, weight lifting, and practicing with each other...Mav was taking classes.

It doesn't matter whether he was 16 or Tyler Hansbrough...he came in three months behind every one and was asked to be the second scoring option on an ACC team. He still had baby fat last year. He played more minutes a game than Marcus Paige and Brice Johnson.

He was asked to do way too much...which hurt his shooting percentages. Dude took shots while he was running 100 mph off screens.

He's taller, stronger, and more athletic this year. He will have 1/10th of the pressure put on him to score. He'll have a better PG to get him the ball. He'll have better inside presences and other perimeter scoring options that will allow him to have more open looks.

Mav is not Scott Wood. He's not Tony Allen either, but he's not as bad of a defender as you think and he's got great size to defend multiple positions.

Mav will be a key part of this team if we are to have great success. You are an idiot if you think otherwise.

i never said he wouldn't be a key part of the team. i just think he is best suited to a role coming off the bench. it takes more than 5 players to have a good team.

i have made it clear in the past that I think the coach was wrong in playing rowan that much as a freshman, especially when we had other capable options (like both martin brothers).

Mav averaged 3 minutes per game more than Caleb and 8 more than Cody (who was basically a defensive player only). Not to mention that at least 2 of the 3 were almost always out there and all 3 played together semi often.

i agree with jbrick. nobody's saying Mav is a HOFer...but he's not total ass either. he was thrust into a role he clearly wasn't ready for. he's still gonna give the team probably 20 mpg this year at a minimum but with different (and less) responsibility than last year. he isn't suited to be the teams #2 or 3 scoring option. but he can be a legitimate scoring threat with a significant role on this team. in fact it sounds like we're all kinda in agreement about Mav being in over his head at times last year.

^^really didn't have a lot of options outside of Mav last year. Cody wasn't much of an offensive threat. Caleb was streaky, as was Mav. plus, they played together plenty of the time. we were butt last year...there wasn't some secret weapon hidden anywhere on the bench. Caleb and Mav weren't much different, tbh. Caleb was more athletic, but also more prone to stupid turnovers due to his athleticism and trying to do too much. statistically, Mav turned it over less than either Caleb or Cody. and was a better FT shooter. that certainly counts for something.

^i'm arguing that last year (and probably this year) he is not and was not suited for that role. i like mav and have been defending him. he has potential and did some good things last year...as we've said a million times, he was forced into a role he was not ready for. he should benefit from us being deeper this year and him not being asked to carry such a load.
