OoT is a go-to for one of the best games ever made and even factoring in the nostalgia factor people are saying that BotW is better. Zelda console games are usually absolutely top tier quality, so even if it is just hype, it is still likely an incredible game.

A 20 point scale? Someone is trying to stand out. It's turning into a pretty good year for gaming already. For the first time in a long time, I have too many games I wanna play.

Guess they should have just slapped the "Game of the Year" seal on it before printing the cover art.

I picked the wrong time to trade in my Shitbox One for a PS4.

I'm playing through Nioh, Uncharted 4 and Bloodborne (which was fucking amazing and deserves a few playthroughs). Then I need to pick up Horizon: Zero Dawn and this for my Wii U. Might be drinking coffee at night.

****SPOILERS****

Probably 6 hours in at this point, and I'm beginning to understand how big the map actually is after getting to the other side of Hyrule and getting some shrines over there.

The thing I'm having trouble with right now is getting by that Guardian on the way to Kakariko village. Am I taking the wrong route? How can you get by that thing without it's laser destroying you instantly?

Also, has anybody found any weapons that don't shatter after 3-4 enemies?

SPOILERS, although if you are reading this thread at this point, you should expect them.

^^I didn't encounter a guardian on the way to Kakariko -- you must be going a different route than me. I just got to Kakariko yesterday. I just followed what the king said and made my way to the Twin Peaks, found a horse stable, and followed the road from there. I did some exploring at some of the mountains/shrines around that area and found a guardian on the other side of a lake but he wasn't really in my way so I just ran away from him. Still not strong enough to hurt them. The only other guardians I've encountered are the ones near the shrine on the Great Plateau that are partially buried/can't move.

In terms of weapons, the only one I've found that has lasted a while is a flaming sword. If you explore around the horse stables near Twin Peaks, you'll find some clues that lead to it. I did get a Shiekah blade and spear in two different shrines that I thought would last a while but those broke after a little bit of use. It seems that spears, even throwing spears, break on impact if you throw them.

Also, Claymore + Horseback = a lot of dead bokoblins, lol.

Overall I cannot get over how absolutely incredible this game is. I've put in maybe 11 hours so far, but barely made a dent in the main quest. I just keep getting distracted by so many other things. There is so much you can do. A true masterpiece.

Can we just assume that every post my have SPOILERS now?

The game is amazing to be sure. Not much to be said that hasn't already been covered. I've put in ~15 hours and don't seem to be any further than others in this thread. I've done a LOT of exploring, climbing, and collecting. (Has anyone seen the little blue glowing magical rabbit looking thing? For me, it always seems to pop up in wooded areas next to lakes. It's very sensitive to movement and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to catch it or kill it. I've tried both and failed miserably. It runs and vanishes into thin air once it's startled.)

Currently, I've traveled east out of Kakariko and climbed the Hateno Tower. This was the point where the scale of the map really got to me and I couldn't decide where to go next. It feels like it would take days to explore just that one piece of the map alone! So I'm currently travelling to the next point in the main quest but haven't gotten there yet.

Also, I haven't found the combat to be all that difficult. The only times I've died in combat was when I killed myself with a bomb on accident. (Excluding a guardian encounter that blew me and my horse off a cliff.)

I've been making my way there all wrong apparently. I just have the waypoint on the map that I can see which direction it is and have been running right at it. That's where I met the Guardian on the cliff. I will do that when I get home because I need to expand my inventory badly.

I'm also about to look for the flaming sword tonight. Thanks Wraith

^That is prob the same guardian I encountered on other side of Selia Lake, which is right down the road from the horse stables, but surrounded by cliffs. I initially went exploring over there after talking to a random guy walking on the road who said he saw a ghost over there. Couldn't find the ghost though.

I died in combat a few times when I first encountered one of those blue bokoblins, but all I had was a boko club, no shield, and three hearts so he took me out with one hit.

Only really have two gripes so far.
1) Inventory is kind of a pain in the ass to deal with. Finding a chest only to open it and find out I don't have any slots left, then going and dropping something is annoying. Same for scrolling to find what I'm looking for to make meals or whatever. This could have all been remedied EASILY if...
2) The WiiU gamepade is essentially useless. They don't use the screen on it at all which is such a stupid decision. It would have made navigating inventory so much more streamlined. I read that it was because they "Didn't want to distract the player from the game" or something like that which is complete bullshit. We all know they just were making it for the Switch in mind to begin with and just ported it with minimal effort. The whole reason the gamepad screen exists is for maps and inventory stuff.

I thought this was a WiiU game ported to the Switch, not the other way around.

I'm assuming they didn't utilize the gamepad, like they did with Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, because they support multiple control schemes? Like the Wii remote, gamepad, etc? Just a guess.

Agreed that it was a waste not to use the gamepad... even if nothing more than using it to display something benign like a map.

I hope there isn't more than one motion controlled shrine puzzle because that was a pain in the ass. Took me at least 10-15 tries.

Also, anyone climb the mountains north of Hateno Village yet? That was a lot of fun! No sarcasm

Edit: Spoilers on the puzzle. I responded before reading the next few posts.

My kid, yeah, I'm old now, quickly realized that the way to solve that puzzle (if it's the one you run a ball through a maze and ramp it off the end to another platform) was to turn the gamepad upside down. That will flip the platform upside down as well and there's no maze to deal with on the bottom of the movable platform. Then it's just a matter of rolling the ball in the right direction.

I can't put this game down. I'm always checking out shrines, following up on a side quest, or climbing a new tower.

Apparently they cut some touchscreen stuff from the game: https://mynintendonews.com/2017/03/06/nintendo-cut-some-touchscreen-features-from-breath-of-the-wild/

Yeah because looking back and forth between the inventory/map screen and the game doesn't? Pretty sure they just didn't want the WiiU version to be better due to extra gameplay features that makes it more streamlined by NOT having to constantly open that stuff.

Doubtful. I like breath of the wild of lot. My only complaint is I wish there were a few more temples, and a build up of non-breakable items. I liked getting the bow and arrow in the forest temple for example....etc.

Yep. Talked to the guy in the stable then found it pretty quickly after that. Still by far the best weapon I have, because I'm afraid to use it and have it shatter

I think it's going to take me forever to finish this game because I'm really trying hard to not use any walkthroughs or item location webpages unless I get majorly stuck somewhere.

Best weapon I've had too. It only has 25 damage points and by this point I've gotten a few more weapons that do more damage, but they aren't nearly as durable. They only time it has come close to breaking is when I found a random shrine while wandering around that had an enemy with super tough armor in it. It broke all of my other weapons and I had only gotten it down to half health before it said the fire sword was close to breaking, but then I died and figured I should just come back when I have stronger weapons/armor.

^^Although that functionality is cool, I'm too much of a purist and would rather find those items in the game.

I've only played about 2 hours of the game so far, in my home I'm 3rd in line, so I ask this mostly in ignorance.

What makes BotW leaps and bounds better than you're average open world game? So far the game feels like your standard open world game with a Zelda skin. I've played many, many open world games so that aspect of the game isn't something new or novel.

That said I'd rather play this game than any other Zelda game out there right now, mostly because this one is something new.

Maybe part of my issue is that I haven't had the time to hit a dungeon yet, which is what I feel sets Zelda games apart from most other games. I have watched more than I've played. Are the divine beasts meant to be the dungeons? I've only seen one so far. It did look pretty cool, but as I understand it there are only 4, so maybe 5 dungeons when you toss in the final dungeon.

There's also the classic aspect of an item you obtain in dungeons helping you solve puzzles whereas with this game I think you obtain all the puzzle solving items after you complete the first 4 shrines? This to allow the payer to tackle quests in any order they wish. But like I said, I don't have much time with the game itself and I try not to watch too much so as to have some sense of mystery by the time I get around to playing.

From what I understand some weapons are only found by scanning amiibo. Not sure if that's confirmed, but there's a chance that certain amiibo (like Zelda characters in Smash) will drop powerful items based on their games.

Ive had zero hardware issues, nothing. It really has worked great for me. I have basically been main lining Zelda since Monday, so I have a lot of hours under my belt in both tv and handheld mode. I honestly really do like the hardware.

and Zelda is fucking amazing. I'm a PC gamer by trade, but the open world genre there (aka Witcher etc), which I love, doesn't hold a candle to BoTW imo. Its just so well built- everything feels lovingly and purposefully created. It also just has a level of polish in its game mechanics no other open world game has ever had.

^That is the only one of the divine beasts I've done and yes, that was fucking awesome. Riding on his back, then jumping into the waterfall and swimming up it to shoot the shock arrows was epic. Just finished that dungeon a few days ago, now I'm working on all of the Zora's domain side quests.

The Lynel mini-boss near Zora's Domain was pretty damn cool too. Dude took me out in like two swipes of his sword the first time I fought him. I then wised up and drank an armor elixir and soon figured out his pattern, but still, was awesome.

Has anyone found any good recipe uses for Hinox monster parts?

^The miniboss isn't along the way there, but once you get there someone will direct you on how to find it. There is another miniboss around there that you can kill as a side quest too.

Monster parts ARE for making elixirs, and different monster parts have different strengths (bokoblin guts have a lot stronger effect than bokoblin horn), but I feel like any part of a Hinox should be significantly stronger than something you can get from a random bokoblin.

not to **************spoil***************** to much, but

eventually you can meet a vendor that has other uses for the monster parts. i am also worried about selling too many parts for rupees, even though i need them, because like someone said, eventually an armor upgrade will costs some part that i have sold all of.

^That is why I'm holding on to all of my gemstones. Except amber and opal, I find those all over the damn place. I figure the rubies/diamonds/sapphires/etc. will have a more significant role in the future. I just wish I had a chest or something I could put them in so they aren't taking up inventory slots.
