the only negative thing I have to say about this game is that the "dungeons" kind of suck. I've done the Zora and Gerudo beasts so far. the Gerudo one was super lame. but overall, definitely the best Zelda game ever.

This is why I like OoT more. The dungeons were classic, and I like that type of game layout more.

Yeah, this game would have been epic with a half dozen true-to-Zelda dungeons. The divine beasts don't cut it. Neither do the shrines.

How's everyone progressing?

I've still got 4-5 map areas to unlock, and done ~40 shrines so far, but I haven't been in any hurry to complete the game at all. I barely travel between towers/shrines and try and run everywhere I want to go exploring along the way. I just don't want it to end.

^I'm about the same. I've completed the Zora divine beasts but I still haven't been to the towers on all of the western part of the map. I just finished exploring the chain of tall islands (one is called Tingle Island btw ) South of Akkala Lab. I got some ancient arrows from Robbie but I need more ancient cores to get the armor. Figured out that you can one shot a guardian if you shoot it in the eye with an ancient arrow, it's pretty badass jumping off a horse and slowing time then shooting one. Currently looking for a shrine on the mainland near Tingle. After that I've pretty much finished the side quests in Kakariko/Hatemo so I'll be moving on to Death Mountain.

i am on my 3rd beast right now. i have 14 hearts and 4/5 of the 2nd stamina wheel. one more section of the map to unlock adjacent to death mountain. worst thing i gotta do is grind for rupees. you need so many for the armor and unlocking fairies.

IIRC 73 shrines. 5/5 on a second stamina wheel, I see that I have the option to start on a 3rd stamina wheel? All I know is that I'm prompted to choose between a heart and more stamina, but I don't need more stamina.

I hear there's a place you can go to respec the spirit orb choices, I haven't ran into it yet.

3 out of 4 divine beasts and I'm holding off on the 4th until I can upgrade all the armor I've found, which I believe I have all three pieces from all available sets. Some are upgraded to 4* most are 3*, a few are 2*. It's hard to get some of the latter upgrades... never sell your ancient cores. Never sell any Lynel or Hinox parts until you've done the upgrades. It may be a good idea to hold onto jewels too (amber, opal, sapphire, ruby). I remember one set of armor (all three pieces) requiring something like 45 pieces of amber. That was the easiest set to 4*, provided you don't sell all your amber off.

So I've purposely stalled the game, making it more exploration and farming to upgrade equipment, which isn't necessary. My kid already beat the game with slightly worse equipment and fewer harts than I have.

Yeah, unlocking that final fairy was 10K or between 30 and 45 minutes of bowling.

Damn. I just upgraded the diamond guardian crown thing and I thought that needing 2 diamonds was steep. Fortunately I haven't sold any cores, I've only upgraded the slate with them.

I gave all console games the boot about 5 years ago. Sold everything I have and refused to let it be a distraction in my life anymore.

But hearing about this game is making me regret all those decisions. The Zelda series was my absolute favorite, and I always played as Link in Smash Bros. I'm itching for it

I went back to play a little today... it was 87 shrines.

I jotted down all the stuff I'll need to max out all my armor sets. It's gonna be tough.

^I only have encountered one. The first time I got to it I was way underpowered and all my weapons broke before I could really do anything. I just went back to it last night though and although it took me a while, it got through it. The one I finished was just southeast of Hateno Lab, on the rock jutting out over the water. A few things help: do lots of backflips -> flurry rush things. When the guardian backs up and starts spinning, hide behind a column and it will hit the column and be dazed for a few seconds allowing you to go to town. Shock arrows and ice weapons will also stun it briefly. When it gets to its third attack, nothing will stun it, so just run around until it shoots and misses, or if you are good enough, parry the lasers with your shield back at it. Don't waste ancient arrows on it though.

There is a moblin with a knights claymore on the way to Zora's domain right before the boulders that block the horse's path (a shrine is right next to it) that is fairly durable and does 38 damage, so if you don't have too powerful weapons, seek that out.

If your armor sucks, just take a defense boosting elixir or food. The weapons you get from these guys are awesome though, I got an ancient axe, ancient spear, and ancient sword that slice right through guardian's legs.

By the time you have about 20 hours into the game the major tests of strength should take about 2 minutes and one weapon. Don the barbarian gear, take a triple attack elixir and kill them almost immediately, I usually have them skip the whole laser ring/updraft stage and go straight from normal attacks to final stage since I deal so much damage. Constant spin attacks ftw

They're really hard in the beginning before you start getting a flood of weapons that do 30+ damage and before you have a high defense.

ATM I'm trying to farm ancient cores so I'll revisit all the major tests of strength after each blood moon. Unfortunately I'm finding I only get an ancient core about 25% of the time but the major tests are no longer major tests. You kill one guardian then use the weapons it drops to kill the next one. I can go through 5 major tests back-to-back and only lose about 5 hearts... but I have 76 defense and the "worst" weapon I use against them is the 30 damage master sword.

Tough in the beginning, easy later on.

Finished the game for the most part. It was good, but got old. It essentially just became a bunch of small shrine quests. I prefer to the well thought out temples.

I just finished the 3rd beast (lizard thing on Death Mountain) and it was laughably easy. guess I should have done that one first. really enjoyed the Eventide Island shrine quest. just got the master sword so I'm gonna run around and do random shit for a while before finishing the main storyline. I think my favorite place I randomly stumbled upon so far is Lurelin Village. as much as I wish there were a few epic dungeons in this game, the amount of fun I have just climbing up tall mountains and gliding to places I haven't been before makes up for it.

98 shrines
4 divine beasts
23 hearts or so

I upgraded my Champion's Tunic all the way (32 defense) plus 28 defense from amber earrings. Basically unstoppable. I can take a hit from a guardian beam and be like fuck you that didn't hurt. All I have left to do are some shrines. It's kinda sad that it's basically over.

sounds kinda meh if you ask me.

i'm at 85 shrines, all 4 divine beasts discovered, stamina maxed out, idk how many hearts. the game kinda gets easy once you get to this point but I'm still having fun finding new places and shrine challenges. just got all the dark armor from the monster guy and discovered the weird horse god who can bring your horses back to life.

^^On the topic of horses, I just found a giant fucking horse. It's like three times bigger than a regular horse and just plows over bokoblins. His top speed is low but he has infinite stamina. The thing took like two stamina wheels to tame but he is a fucking beast.

I'm still lacking 2 photo locations before I face Gannon, but this is an awesome game.

Only major complaint I have is that there isnt enough motivation to explore some parts of the amazing map. For example I don't think I've done anything in the Gerudo Highlands besides climb the tower to unlock the map. I'd like to see a few more small towns, like that fishing village in the south. The stables seemed like they were supposed to take the role of small towns but they were all so similar it was impossible to remember who was at what stable.

I'm enjoying it a lot and it's clearly a supremely well made game but I must admit I prefer the more structured dungeon based classic zelda better. I've only done 1 divine beast but I'm over halfway through the Shrines and have all but one tower taken care of. Got the master sword and upgraded as much of the equipment as I can at the moment. Only have 3 memories resolved and maybe that's part of the problem but I guess I kinda would like a little more story or sense of urgency on some things. I'm just not a big open world game fan in general so I'm aware a lot of this is just personal bias.

I can see what you mean. Although the game is absolutely incredible, it is not perfect and still lacks a few things. The only real reason to explore every square inch (like I am doing) is to find korok seeds and just see how grand and magnificent it can be. Admittedly, there are some extremely beautiful landscapes. If they take a game of this scale, add some more traditional dungeons/bosses and give it a better soundtrack, the next game will be even better.

Anyway, currently on my final Divine Beast (the Rito one). Have explored every inch of Hyrule except Tabantha. Plan to to do that, finish upgrading my stuff, then finally head to Hyrule castle to finish it all.

Anybody buy the DLC? I'm having trouble with the Trial of the Sword, I've only made it to room 10 and I'm impressed with the challenges they're throwing at us.

Also turned on Hero's Path (shows exactly where you've been on the map), and I'm shocked at all the little pockets of Hyrule I missed despite putting in 90+ hours and finding all the shrines.

Yes

^^^you really don't like the soundtrack? For me it sets the perfect tone throughout the game. The blood moon music is pretty great, and I love jumping on a horse and riding through fields for the music alone.

Just found my first labyrinth yesterday (the one north of Robbie). I freaking love this game.

I don't dislike the music. It's just that the franchise has some very iconic music in it that I miss. I know the current piano stuff really sets the atmosphere and that works fine, I'd just like more.

How much were you guys playing per night?

I muscled through it in about three weeks to a month. I purposely held off doing the last... I forget names now, animal mini-temple? and did shrines to prolong the game until I got bored doing that and finished the last animal mini-temple and final castle in one short playthrough.

As good as the game was I don't think it could hold my interest for nearly 5 months.

^I didn't have much time to play during the week, aside from like an hour here or there. Otherwise it was usually late night sessions on Fri/Sat nights where I didn't have anything else going on. Also, I explored every square inch of Hyrule. I wasn't trying to track down all the Korok seeds or anything crazy like that, I just wanted to experience everything visually and see all the different landscapes. It was a pain in the ass having to switch between hot/cold outfits and stuff but it was still fun finding random giant skeletons and tracking down the dragons to get a shard of their horn and stuff. I did finish all of the shrines though.

I'm only about 6 hours in. Fun so far, but some of the annoying parts of BotW are still there. I'm hoping there are actual dungeons in this one and it isn't all shrines.

I did attach a mine cart to the end of my sword though.
