Yep, DNC and Hillary lost this one. A fact I find rather surprising. I thought for sure Trump was somehow different and got different voters. Alas, poor rural whites were just as unlikely to vote this time around as any previous election. So, it sure seems like Trump just got the same voters as Romney did in 2012, just fewer of them, and Hillary got the same voters as Obama, but a whole bunch fewer of them.

Quote :
"This was a LOW turnout election year, no GOP surge—>4 million fewer Democratic voters this yr, 1.2 million fewer GOP voters #Election2016"

Trump flipped rust belt voters, will probably need to look into what happened there. Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin were turning points.

I said this in another thread but both sides realize automation is what did it but neither wanted to talk about it because it doesn't appeal to the emotions of the people it effects. The Democrats chose to wholly ignore and assume dying unions would drive support like always and Trump decided to feed them a bunch of bullshit that life would go back to normal again.

Neither actually has anything to do with their actual problems but at least paying attention to them won them over. And you'd be joking if you didn't think Comey's letter didn't rationalize a lot of suburban Republicans to come home in the end.

Obviously MMQBing, but I think the focus on "expanding the map" in states like GA, AZ, and even NC was a big mistake. Not one campaign event in Wisconsin. Barely went to Michigan. Should have stuck to defending the "blue wall" and locked down PA/MI/WI. All three of those states were decided by 1% or less and would have flipped the outcome if they went the other way.

And frustratingly, those were all states were clinton performed below polling in the primary. Should have been a warning.

1. Lazy white, Latino, and black people who voted for Obama, but didn't bother to vote for her
2. Butthurt Bernie Babies who voted third party as a protest
3. Hillary for being a shitty candidate and the DNC's blind support of her
4. CNN for its garbage reporting and use of Trump surrogates
5. Polls for being absolutely worthless.
6. The electoral college for allowing the same bullshit that happened in 2000 to happen again
7. Uneducated white women who watch nothing but reality television and think it's actually reality

Ummm

I'll say it bc no one else is going to:

THE FBI

Not the Comey letter and follow up letter, I'm talking about the Trumplandia NY Field office. Unauthorized leaks, violating the Hatch act, and most of those leaks have been shown to be absolutely wrong.

I don't think this was the most significant factor in Hillary's loss, but it was a factor, and it was shenanigans, and it needs to be investigated right the fuck right now.

Definitely contributed, but the exit polls showed that 60 something percent of people made up their minds way before any of the debates. People didn't care about most of those scandals because they were sticking with either one of them regardless.

^^This is also important when we start second guessing all the strategic decisions Hillary's campaign made. There were definitely some missteps and outright ignorance of the mood of the electorate in certain parts of the country. However, no one could have foreseen the FBI taking such a direct and partisan role in the election. When you look at the margins she lost by in the rust belt, everything mattered.

Millennials also sucked ass in this election. Stayed at home and posted about the election on FB instead of getting up off their asses. They had no problem voting for the cool black dude twice, but when grandma needed help, they figured she'd be fine.

To me it really doesn't matter if the FBI leaks ACTUALLY played a roll in the elections or not. It's the precedent of having a 3-letter agency attempt to influence an election. It's a completely disturbing precedent. Comey need to investigate regardless of what Trump wants to do, I know we are in the era of intelligence leaks, but it was just too much and too one-sided. If there is no investigation of the NY field office then we're left assume that Comey is complicit in the leaks.

Now that they've won, "law and order" is suddenly meaningless to conservatives.

I mean you're proving my point. 9 million votes that went to Obama last time disappeared, because the Dems couldn't energize the same people needed to win. Old people historically come out and vote, whereas young people do not, unless it's someone 'cool' like Bill or Obama.

I agree with all that. I just bristle when anyone blames millenials when clearly more blame resides with all the old people.

Does it though? If millennials had gone out in the same numbers as for Obama we wouldn't have this thread. Through complacency, protest, or just plain laziness we cost ourselves this election.

Also I believe 'grandma' was a reference to Hillary. In case that wasn't clear.

^

I'm 31 and have voted in every election that I've been old enough. I know I'm technically part of the broad category of Millennials, but culturally, politically, and socially I've always felt closer to Gen Xers. The disconnect I feel between myself and my Millennial students is palpable.

Except that is the same generation that votes Republican every election, more or less. Trump received mostly an equal amount of votes as McCain and Romney (within a couple hundred thousand). Hillary fell short by MILLIONS. So that's your own fault if you thought that base was going to completely shy away from a Republican nominee just because of his rhetoric.

^^ yep.

If you got out and voted, nobody is blaming you. But all of your cohorts who sat around and did nothing, yet are bitching about it on Facebook can essentially go fuck themselves.

^ I hear 1980-2000 a lot, but I will take GenX gladly, even if I'm barely part of it. Haha.

Blaming voter blocks is pointless.

Blame the people in power who failed to sway those voter blocks.

Personally, I can place equal (if not more) blame on those who didn't vote, especially in a case like this where it came down to a few hundred thousand votes.

Nameless individuals within a group can't change anything. You need people with strong voices to influence them as a whole, which is why voters are targeted by campaigns in blocks. Herd the cattle, and I don't mean that in a bad way. It's just human group behavior.

I understand the argument that both voters turning out for Donald Trump and voters not turning out for Hillary Clinton influenced the outcome of the election; however, I feel that more weight should be given to voters turning out for Donald Trump.

As the two least popular candidates in presidential history (and with Donald Trump being even more disliked than Hillary Clinton), I would have expected both of them to have lost millions of votes this election.

Quote :
"But in general, Bill Clinton’s viewpoint of fighting for the working class white voters was often dismissed with a hand wave by senior members of the team as a personal vendetta to win back the voters who elected him, from a talented but aging politician who simply refused to accept the new Democratic map. At a meeting ahead of the convention at which aides presented to both Clintons the “Stronger Together” framework for the general election, senior strategist Joel Benenson told the former president bluntly that the voters from West Virginia were never coming back to his party."

Right on the money

"When a political party is demolished, the principal responsibility belongs to one entity: the party that got crushed. It’s the job of the party and the candidate, and nobody else, to persuade the citizenry to support them and find ways to do that. Last night, the Democrats failed, resoundingly, to do that, and any autopsy or liberal think piece or pro-Clinton pundit commentary that does not start and finish with their own behavior is one that is inherently worthless."
