Saw this last night - it was really good. I really like the actor that played Newt and they must have spent $texas on the special effects.

Not sure how I feel about Johnny Depp being added to the cast though. Not that I don't like Depp, but I feel like he'll be a distraction.

I think this is going to be a 5 part series?

saw it tonight in imax. really enjoyed it.

im ok with Depp. Bellatrix in the harry potter series distracted me a bit but i got over it. Very tim burton-ish.

(I don't think there are any real spoilers here, but if you're hypersensitive to movie talk, maybe just skip this)

I didn't like it.

I wanted to like it. I liked the main series. I like Eddie Redmayne. But I did not like this movie.

There were plotlines and characters that were introduced and never really went anywhere. (Jon Voight and both of his sons could have been removed without substantially affecting the story)

There were some seriously weak editing choices. I saw the movie with three other people. None of us were clear on how Newt and Kowalski got captured after the scene with the horny rhino thing in the park. One second they're relieved to have caught this thing, the next the ex-auror lady is showing up at Congress with them in the briefcase.

The resolutions at the end were all too clean, which I suppose is a common failing of Rowling stories (Hermione's time travel in Prisoner comes to mind), but here there was just too much for me to ignore it.

The antagonist (to the extent to which there was a clear antagonist for most of the movie) was hardly developed at all.

I saw "Quidditch through the Ages" while shopping at the toy store today. That would be a cool story to explore!

Anyway...

^Fair points, mostly. Especially regarding the Shaw family characters. The resolutions were quite clean, but I chalk that up to it being, at the heart, a story for kids. Regarding the editing, I did think it was pretty clear Tina had been watching them wrestle the rhino, then took the suitcase after watching them all get in.

I thought this was a great story. The first couple of HP movies were childish for the sake of children. The middle ones were for tweens/teens and about growing up. The last two were dark...too dark for young children...and was about kids having to deal with grownup stuff. Fantastic Beasts was for adults, about adults, and balanced the scales of inner-child playfulness with actual dark tension and deeper issues.

They went into the briefcase and then she sat on it and locked them in there. You don't see them going into it because the camera is on her watching them, but you hear them talking as they enter. It was probably just a chance to not spend on a special effect we've already seen.

I mostly agree with this, but you do see a small piece of Credence's black mass flying away showing a part of him survived, plus you know Grindelwald is going to escape.
