If an agent paid money to DSJ and the NC State staff was not aware of it/had no role in it, does it have any long term implications for the program. Obviously, he was ineligible so we would have to forfeit the games he played. But it doesn't seem like this should result in future sanctions for the program, right?

On the surface, it seems like any punishments would be for the 2016-2017 season only. But we'll see.

He was paid by an agent that NC State had previously sent a disassociation letter to years before who we could take legal action on if we wanted for this. We may have to forfeit wins in the 2016-2017 season...but that basically means this is a non-story for NC State.

Yeah doesn't sound like we're screwed at all. Sounds like a rogue coach, rogue parent and rogue shoe company executive.

We definitely could be screwed. But I don’t see anything so far that justifies jumping to that conclusion.

I think everyone is expecting the handful of wins from DSJ's season to be vacated

Other than that, according to that timeline, the university seemed to do their due diligence.

"Screwed" may be too harsh a term, but rogue coach or not, the fact remains that we had a coach hand deliver money to facilitate the continued commitment of a player to the team. If this was UNC, everyone here would be calling for heads to roll but since it's us many are just like, "eh, no big deal."

I'm glad it appears that the school did their due diligence on this but I'm still pissed about it. I'm certainly not going to take the UNC defense and play the "it's not so bad, everybody does this" card. Good riddance to the previous coaching staff.

Honest question, how different is this than what John Blake did at UNC? Obviously, the scale was larger there and touched more players but it seems similar enough to me. And what was their punishment? Vacated wins, post season ban, and ... did they lose any scholarships? I can't recall.

to be fair, that's how these things always work. shoe is on the other foot for UNC fans who spent like 10 years defending their academic fraud and now get to hope the NCAA punishes us harshly.

honestly the UNC stuff was so long ago, i don't remember what all Blake was found to be doing. but i think the main difference that we are pointing to is that the staff and player associated with what happened at State are gone. the other point is that the FBI sees the schools as victims in this situation...obviously it remains to be seen how the NCAA will handle it.

Yeah, the unnamed coach *cough* early *cough* definitely lied to his bosses about this payment, as they have written statements from the coaching staff denying any knowledge.

UNC went in on defending their coaches. We fired ours. Also John Blake was essentially employed by an agent at the same time he was a coach at UNC.

The attorney for adidas executive Jim Gatto told a federal court in New York Tuesday morning that her client paid the family of Dennis Smith Jr. $40,000 to secure his commitment to play basketball at N.C. State, Yahoo Sports reported.

Defense attorney Casey Donnelly made the comment during opening statements of Gatto’s fraud trial, where the federal government has charged him in connection with payments to numerous college basketball players in violation of NCAA rules."

Only $40k for adidas to deliver Dennis Smith Jr. to NC State is so cheap.

^^ It's very obvious people will have the doubt---why he chose NCSU?

I'm sure UNC fans think if he had chosen UNC, he would've been like "no thanks, I don't need the $40k, UNC is just that awesome"

Dunking tonight with David Thompson judging. Wonder if he'll rock a 44 red jersey, that would be awesome.

Dude had the best dunk in last year's contest. Hopefully the judges don't get seated by stupid bullshit like wearing a Vince Carter jersey, knee high socks or jumping over a crouching midget.

pretty sure DT has been a dunk contest judge many times previously, fyi, though can't recall him being a judge with a State player in the contest. Maybe when Webb was in it?
