That literally looks like the pictures we have from Dunkirk, why don't you think it looks authentic? What do you think real war looks like?

The setting, fine i'm sure its accurate. The equipment yea its accurate.

Watch the peeeeooopplllee

There isn't any real fear. Look at the people jumping off the boat. Taking there sweet time. When that long line group of soldiers duck when a fighter is dive bombing them, they all go to the ground from foreground to background in order like its a wave coming over them. Not realistic. Everyone drops at once.

What Saving Private Ryan and all other excellent movies do is have raw terror, fear, and chaos. I didn't get that from this trailer. The real sense of tension isn't in this footage.

Maybe its just because the entire thing is being attacked by fighters and not other soldiers.

My take on it, in all honestly, is that Nolan doesn't seem to know how to shoot a war scene like previous movies have. His other works are fantastic but this may not be his forte.

I'm, sorry, very little of the trailer says, convincingly, I'm in a harrowing situation and my life is on the line.

I really don't think it will be that good. All those little things point to overall errors in capturing the right emotions to convey the right level of drama and tension.

I hope I am wrong. Love most all of Nolans work

If there is one group of people that can stand calmly and quietly in a line, it's the British.

Looks incredible. Had the pleasure of visiting Dover a while back. They had some fishing boats on display there that had been a part of the evacuation of Dunkirk. Crew of the ferry I was on said that every Summer, the boats that are still seaworthy (I'm sure they have been restored plenty of times over the years) do a run to Dunkirk in remembrance. This movie hits close to home.

Not sure if you can relate Dunkirk (the battle) to any other war scenario. I mean the entire BEF was backed up to the channel. They had nowhere to go. Who knows where those guys' minds were psychologically.

the movie 300 says hello.

It is really more of an honor than a pity to be backed into a corner and die for your country, I mean, we are all gonna die someday, so, that would be one hell of a way to go.

^^You could easily describe Schindler's List as horrifyingly tragic and depressing, but it won best picture at the Oscars. May end up being a similar situation.

^yeah, but the whole plot of that, while about a horrible and depressing situation, was about him saving people. I honestly don't really know the history behind this movie, and I'm sure people get saved, but that latest trailer was just super heavy on the terribleness and didn't even show much of a glimmer of hope

I'm not a historian but I'm from the UK and it is more well known there since it was the precursor to the Battle of Britain and the country was facing legitimate invasion. In short, most of the soldiers do get saved due to the extreme heroism of civilian fishermen and boats. Like there were legitimately people crossing the channel in rowboats and bringing back like two soldiers at a time.

The psychological impact alone is crazy. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers were stranded with home literally in sight and no way to get there with a seemingly unstoppable enemy approaching.

That's good to know. I just think that trailer was overwhelmingly depressing, and especially since it is based on a historical event that people could easily look up and see what happened, it seems weird that they would cut a trailer that really barely hints at the possible positive outcome

British Expeditionary Force still didn't understand the impact of the Blitzkrieg, and they were completely unprepared when they first faced the Germans in battle. They were pushed back to the English Channel and the British Navy was unable to come to their aide. So basically, civilian fisherman saved Europe, because without them, the BEF would've been captured in its entirety. Then there would have been no reason for Great Britain to persevere during the Battle of Britain. They most assuredly would've capitulated to Germany, and history would be entirely different.

I was thinking an evacuation would be kinda boring of all the WWII parts the movie could focus on, but my boi Nolan will do that typical 2-3 stories running in parallel to keep things interesting.

Well, I wouldn't say I enjoy war movies, mainly because I feel like one doesn't necessarily enjoy war, but the last war entertainment piece that I got into was The Pacific. Admittedly though, I haven't had a chance to see Hacksaw Ridge yet.

And when I say war movie, I mean Vietnam or WWII.

That is just how realistic/serious war movies are. Cinematically they are good movies, but given what they are portraying and that for the most part their portrayals are recreations of messed up stuff that actually happened, people typically don't enjoy them.

Hacksaw Ridge was good though, as long as you can get past Andrew Garfield's over-the-top Southern accent.

Lame. Hurt Locker was great. Generation Kill was incredible, but yah it was a miniseries not a movie. Jarhead is one of my favorites, but that may be for personal reasons. Black Hawk Down was also a great watch.

If all you care about is WW2 and Nam (which is strange) then Fury is also a fantastic recent war movie.

Hell go watch Restrepo if you want to watch an actual war movie (ok, documentary), if you can get past the lack of soaring inspirational WW2 music and themes.

I saw Three Kings, and enjoyed that movie a good bit, although it reminded me a lot of Kelly's Heroes.

It isn't that I have anything against movies depicting our modern wars, they just don't interest me that much. I tried watching Green Zone and just couldn't get into it. I do need to check out Jarhead though.

I just like studying WWI and WWII, they fascinate me as far as the inter-workings of so many opposing governments trying to work their stuff out while simultaneously not trying (or trying) to wreck the world.
