So I call the insurance company to check on the 1099...and they said they put it all in the client's name. So yeah..

Guess I'm just going to list it as regular income.

Grrrrr. Have to file an amended tax return from two years ago. Irritating thing is that I argued with the CPA at the time over something I disagreed with, and 2 years later, he's like 'yeah, you were right...'

^ What did they get you on?

Not that I've spent that much time thinking about it, but obviously every time tax season comes around, I try to figure out the IRS. I know people "cheat" on their taxes every year, and obviously it goes unnoticed. But then a savings account your dad started for you when you were 5 years old make 10 cents in interest one year and they send you a letter.

Are there some things that automatically trigger the IRS? Like retirement/savings accounts and 1099s? Obviously people with a lot of cash business get away with murder every year.

This actually wasn't anything the IRS caught. In fact, when we are done, they are going to owe us a lot of money. The CPA said we had to suspend a rental business loss that actually should not have been suspended.

For those that work at home, do you claim a deduction for your "home office?"

I always thought that was only for people that run their own business out of that office, not people who just work from home a few days a week...

^^ My wife does. She works remotely as a data analyst and she uses one room for her office. It's pretty easy going through TurboTax.

The standard is exclusive and regular use. Only work from home 2 days a week? You don't pass the regular use test. Play video games in there after hours, you don't pass the exclusive use test.

What about if you got dual monitors one has all your work tabs and the other has TWW and Facebook???

I could argue (and document) that I have gotten clients off both TWW and Facebook before so hopefully they dont go there.

Filed on 1/31 and got my fed refund in the bank 1 week later.

NC switched me to Stage 1 a month ago today... and I am still there. Must have hit a snag

2-3 work days out of each 5 day work week isn't regular use?

Seems like it is to me:

Due to a bullshit new rule requiring conservation easements to include form 8886 I'll be filing taxes late - trump said he'd remove the requirement but so much for that

The school district my wife works for got all their data hacked and a lot of the teachers' returns have run into issues because someone already filed false returns for them. Got a letter that we're in that yesterday from the IRS.

Said give 30 days, lulz what a joke

BTTT

Can someone give me a little advice on adjusting withholding vs. estimated tax payments?

Long story short I owe quite a bit to the IRS this year. Enough that my CPA has setup estimated payments for me for 2018. It seems to be a mix of the successful stock market year and my quarterly bonuses increasing in the later parts of the year. (I am a single filer, allowance of 1, salary with weekly pay)

They suggested going with estimated payments instead of trying to adjust my withholding because the investment returns and the bonuses are not static income and the estimated payments may be adjusted if it doesn't appear that my total income will be as much as it was last year.

Is this a good way of looking at it? Are estimated payments only a headache because of having to remember to write the check instead of just having it come out of my paycheck each week?
