Did we really get rejected by Pastner in 2011?

It was one of those deals where we reach out to the agents of every coach we're looking at, regardless of where we rank them, and gauge interest. He apparently had none, or didn't feel like he'd be a serious candidate, and so their side ended up chattering about how Pastner "wasn't interested" in the job. Which of course led to Jeff Goodman talking about Pastner being another coach "Giving Debbie the Heisman".

That may have been the coaches reactions back in 2011 but now all the coaches look at our vacancy with a sense of wonder like

Honestly I'd be fine with any of

Marshall, Miller or Wade. After that I start worrying/questioning.

I just hope it's someone with some personality and fire in a good way and can be consistent. Program needs an identity.

Prediction: Search goes late into the tournament so anticipation builds as we fetter over which elite eight team we are going to poach.
It turns out to be Seth Greenberg finishing up his tournament coverage.

Fuck that pessimist outlook.
Donovan and Calipari are arm wrestling in Fountain for a spot on Archie's staff.

I'd personally be fine with Moton too. No Keatts though. Dude can't coach D.

Knowing that we're after Wade will prompt Clemson to fire Brownell at season's end. They'll also be able to play the respect card about us firing Gott mid season vs respecting Brownell and letting him finish

We fired him mid season. Just because we let him coach the last 5 games doesnt change that.

Lots of #sources close to Wade have let it slip that he values the NC State job over Clemson. I think we over-value the alum thing, just like we do with Archie.

Plus, Clemson can't afford to pay what we can. They're paying the football staff a TON of money and Brownell has a buyout of $5 million.

So no, I don't think Clemson makes a knee-jerk reaction and fires Brownell just to try and snag Wade before we can. Does anyone really think Wade is worth a $5 million signing bonus it would take to get out of the Brownell contract?

First calls goto Archie and Marshall. I think the bridge with Marshall has already been burned wouldnt surprise me if Debbie doesnt even bother.

Next you call Wade and Holtmann.

Next, if you have made it this far there is no point things arent looking great.

If you make it past Wade and Holttman you have to go ahead and call Keatts and wrap it up ASAP to save face.

Not getting Gregg Marshall. That's a classic example of overvaluing this job, in my opinion. I have mixed feelings but ultimately think it's going to be Archie.

Hot take. Anyway, other than the fact that Gary Williams hated her and it continues to come up every time we need a new coach, what is the actual reasoning behind why she's so terrible? Seriously, what is it?

^If so bad I'm sure we'd have seen an exodus of our non-revenue sport coaches. Granted I don't follow those teams closely but I know several are doing well and I'm sure those coaches could bolt for equally as good jobs if she was miserable to work for. Seems like her hires in those areas have stuck around? Unless I'm not thinking of like an angry gymnastics coach..

Maryland fans absolutely hate her. In every thread on /r/collegebasketball regarding State's coaching search there's always Maryland fans just randomly chiming in about how much they hate Yow, she fucked us the last time, and will fuck us again.

^they're about as consistent as UVA fans defending games that end in the 40's/50's are as entertaining as games in the 70's/80's.

Thought Keatts was known for defense? Am I wrong?

Just looked at Kenpom, I was wrong. They have a 30/163 offense/defense ranking.

Maryland fans are just bitter. Yow improved their sports and Director's Cup standings, but absolutely left their athletics in shambles over some really bad budgeting/spending and it didn't come out until after she left. They had to cut some programs and such, it was pretty awful, supposedly part of the reason they left the ACC to chase more money. She was revered for years apparently and most thought Gary was the bad guy when they had public disagreements.

I'd say Yow had made a bunch of good hires since she got to State, and I don't really think Gott was a bad hire. Can't argue the program hasn't improved since the Lowe years and he is leaving the program in a better position than he inherited it. Now to just hope she can improve and find an even better coach now that the position is more appealing.

Will he Wade the waters?

Can Greg Marshall in a new era?

UMD fans have every reason to hate Yow. Other than a couple wildly successful seasons, they were the laughing stock of the conference. She also totally mismanaged their athletic budget which screwed their entire athletic department for many years. I really don't trust her to make the right hire here, except that you you couldnt spit and not hit a qualified candidate. But I think the concerns with working for her as well as her pending retirement is a real issue that will need to be dealt with.

Honestly, I am not sure what possible benefit came from her announcing her retirement 2 years in advance, other than letting future coaches know that they won't have to deal with her for very long. In reality, she should have been fired the moment her retirement became public knowledge.

It's interesting that she gets the blame for mismanaging funds at Maryland and when she was hired here, one of her first priorities was to make sure our finances were in order. She has repeatedly made comments about how jacked the money situation was under Fowler and how we are in a much healthier space now.

I can't imagine that her priorities were that much different at Maryland. Maybe she has become the scapegoat for their shitty money situation?

people might not like DY and that might be deter potential candidates...i won't pretend to know her reputation among folks in the coaching community. with that said...UnclePen on twitter doesn't know shit. i'm fairly certain he was the same twitter handle spreading bogus and weird rumors during the last basketball coaching search.

I mean, she was ultimately the one responsible. So, yes.

And my post was in context to a post above about how UMD fans hated Yow. I think she is generally well liked here.

Yes, you are wrong. Unless being an assistant for Pitino means defensive minded. His UNCW teams are known for offense.

14 NCAA tournament appearances in 16 years, as well as back-to-back-to-back double digit win seasons in football. If that's the laughing stock of the conference what the fuck are we?

And the other sports, Women's basketball won a NC, and was usually good, and they were super good at some random olympic sport like soccer or lacrosse or something.

lol Maryland was never the laughing stock of the conference. people hated them and were glad to see them go because their fans were assholes and nobody really liked maryland...but it's not because they were a laughing stock in the conference.

Yeah hate on Maryland all you want, I sure did, but to call them the "laughing stock of the conference" is pretty dumb, especially for a state fan.
