I'd take collins just to piss off the tarholes. Looks to be decent with x's and o's, has some time at a decent program and learnings from coach k. Shit - if you can't beat them, hire them.

If we don't get Archie, then the VCU coach would be my 2nd choice. Dude seems to have the qualities we want in a coach. Marshall will be too expensive. Keatts isn't a defensive minded coach. Moton should be ahead of Keatts IMO.

Would love to get one of: Miller, Marshall, Wade. One of those three and I'm thrilled. Plz no to Howland. Don't really love Crean either.

I want Gregg Marshall so bad....I'll be disappointed with ANY hire if we don't at least throw a blank check his way first...

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/mvc/2014/02/04/college-basketball-wichita-state-coach-gregg-marshall/5202599/

Read that and tell me you're not convinced he should be our first phone call....he would embrace the challenge and coach with a metaphorical middle finger raised toward UNC/Duke....and especially aw shucks Roy...

that's what was rumored...not sure if that was just our spin on it or if there was truth to it.

the national hot takes are the worst. anybody who lazily says "4 NCAATs, 2 Sweet 16s in 6 years and you're firing him?!?" has not watched much of us over the last 2 seasons. we are a complete trainwreck. you can't make that argument if you've actually seen this team this year. a change has to be made. there's no question, and everybody in the local media completely agrees. the national media is using the same lazy takes from the Herb era...and hell, maybe they had a legitimate point that time. but not this time. god, no

also, the "it's a tough neighborhood" argument...yes Duke and UNC are great. but we only play them 3 or 4 times/year. that doesn't preclude us from being good. other than competing for local recruits (and we've won a few of those battles), it's no different than going to coach at any other ACC school...you still gotta go through Duke and UNC if you want to win the conference. that's another lazy argument. geographic proximity to other good schools doesn't automatically mean you are at a disadvantage. we suck because of bad coaches...not because Duke and UNC are good.

Herb was a damn good coach. He brought us consistency and competitiveness as well as one of the greatest players in ACC history. He was more successful than the guy before him, and better than the two that followed him. But, since this is NC State and we have decided to either be competitive for a National Championship or fire the coach, he had to go.

imo, it's not quite that black and white. and we didn't decide we wanted to be competitive for national titles out of the blue...that "decision" was made because we won 2 titles in our history and have been a nationally prominent program in the past.

yes, he did a good job here. he absolutely elevated the program from the Les era. we had some pretty damn good teams. but ultimately, he didn't achieve the success in the postseason that the fans desired (he doesn't have to win a natty, but 1 sweet 16 in 10 years is kinda rough) and it seemed like the program had kinda plateaued with him, even his best teams couldn't quite get over that hump. his last team is a good example of that...started 21-5 and finished 22-10 after a poor finish to end the season. you can make the argument that we were too tough on him and that we should've been more appreciative. he was solid. he wasn't great. he was given a very long leash..10 years is a long time, even when you inherit a basement dweller like he did, and in the end he sorta wore out his welcome.

but to continue to make that argument with Gott (that we ran off a winner) is idiotic. anybody making that argument needs to sit down and watch the game @UNC, @Wake, @UL...and then they can try to tell us with a straight face that Gott has this program on an upward trajectory and moving in the right direction.

This was never about wins and losses.

The inability to retain talent year-after-year, as well as the multi-year deterioration of team chemistry/cohesion is what forced the executioner's hand here. Losing multiple games by 30+ this season and the years long slide away from even being a tournament bubble team are symptoms of bigger problems that are only really solved by burning the house down and rebuilding from the ground up.

The reality is your players get you fired. And when college kids are brazen enough to ignore you when you're talking or be openly disrespectful to your face that's an indictment on you just as much as them.

Lutz was the X and O's guy and people are just now realizing that.

Same skid happened last year when Lutz stopped coaching.

Thanks to Mark for the time spent, he did well to get us back to this level now it's time to take a step further.

The Hot Takes (and Gottfrieds family tweets, for that matter) refuse to focus on progress.

The first 4 years only shows that Sidney Lowe underperformed his recruits (which if you get the rankings out and start comparing programs with similar recruiting prowess, showed a glaring issue with our ability to reach our potential under him). Awesome - you did the basic job with a stable of recruits that most coaches would be able to bring in at this program.

Step up from Sidney Lowe -yes. Long term solution to our underperformance and potential to compete at a high level - NO. We did the right thing, because we are clear in our expectations.

This program will *almost* recruit for itself, assuming you hire a staff of decent recruiters and you have any personality at all with families in their homes. It will definitely recruit at a high enough level to keep happy players who develop over 4 years going to the NCAA tourney every year, and in the Top 25 on a regular basis. A down year at NCSU should be 25-40 in the ranking. Every once in a while. Herb didn't meet this because his style of play was unattractive to dynamic recruits. Sidney didn't achieve this because he just can't coach basketball very well. Gottfried did better, but again - not a long term solution.

Give me a hard working coach who gets hard working players and can coach on both sides of the ball, and I don't care where he came from.

"N.C. State has an opportunity here that is unique to its woeful history of coaching hires. Through more than three decades it has been the least of the three high-level programs in the Research Triangle. That will not be altered in the near future. However, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski just turned 70, and North Carolina’s Roy Williams will be 67 in August. It would be lovely if they both coach forever. That remains highly unlikely.

We do not know how many seasons remain for either, but can surmise that the next N.C. State coach should have an opportunity to be coaching through the transition at one or both schools. If the university gets this one right, that coach could have a program in place that becomes more prominent should either of the others fumble its process."

Sadly that "Hot Take" was used when we hired Gott.

The theory was he'd come in, bring in great recruits and set his system up and then we'd just be going to the tournament and getting better each season waiting for K, Roy, Boeheim, and Pitino to ride into the sunset and Gott would be in the upper-echelon of coaches in the ACC.

Obviously that didn't pan out. But I agree, eventually Coach K has to retire and Duke is going to have to hire better than Jeff Capel to stay relevant. Roy will have to retire for health reasons in the next 4-5 years, doesn't seem they have a slam-dunk lined up(I think Duke has 2-3 potential options), but it's UNC, they'll be able to hire just about anyone they want outside of Cal and Self.

God you are dumb. It would take double Gott's salary to get Marshall to come here and leave Wichita.

^If it pans out, who cares what he's making. You think anyone that's a WOlfpack fan will give a rat's ass what he makes each year if he wins us a ACCT much less a final four?

________
We have to find that balance of good recruiter and good tactician as well.

We haven't had both as a head coach since...V

Sendek-Good system and bball x's o's guy, good defense, boring to watch and for recruits to want to be a part of.
Consistent but weaker ACC league then as well. Thanks for bringing us back from Les Days.

Lowe-Good recruiter and leader...not so good with system and x's and o's. Good try Sid, but we had to move on.

Gottfried- Knew he likely wasn't long term solution, good recruiter and good assistant squad. X's O's a lot like Sid...poor defense but hey, we put up points! Thanks for the NCAA run and getting State back to being relevant. Good luck.

_______________

That being said...we need someone that has personality and flair as well, something that is NCSU Brand of basketball.

yup.

With Lutz, 4 NCAATs and 2 sweet 16s
Since Lutz, 2 losing seasons

Last year maybe we could attribute that to a cupboard left empty after transfers, etc. It was cat barber and not really anyone else.

This year we have top 25 talent. we have depth. no way this team should be this bad. I'd bet a large sum of money we'd have single digit losses, and probably ranked if Lutz was still around. He really never got the coaching recognition he deserved.

Dumb article is dumb. Looking a few season's W-L records and tournament runs is good information, but not a complete picture.

And not to mention, hasn't Miami been more successful recently, with lesser recruiting classes? Haven't they won a championship during MG's tenure at State?

And then there's actually watching the games. Defensive struggles for 5 years and on a downhill slide. Great talent with inconsistent and poor results. Inability to keep players. I really like MG and I wasn't necessarily calling for his ouster. But the flaws in his teams have been fairly consistent and growing. There have been no signs of sustained program growth.
