Why should a group of survivors keep you around instead of eating you before you shrivel up?

Rather, the question should be how the "group of survivors" would keep themselves from decorating my rotisserie or stock pot!

- i can repair a wide range of small engines and electronics (chainsaws, generators, refrigerators, etc.)
- not a panicker
- not afraid of adverse sleeping conditions
- am very good at improvising
- have no chronic illnesses or addictions
- have watched and absorbed techniques from Primitive Survival youtube channel
- can cook things from scratch
- can improvise ways to purify water

things i cant do:
- haven't hunted, but i've watched enough TV shows I think i could trap rabbits/squirrels
- don't know much chemistry: i know the steps to make saltpeter but not efficiently and i don't know why it works
- very minimal medical skills/training

^^i guess not hesitating to engage in apocalyptic cannibalism is a skill in itself

^i didn't ask about what traits you have that would be desirable in the apocalypse. i'm talking about skills. things you can do and have proven you can do by actually doing them. watching a bunch of youtube videos don't mean shit.

I have enough shampoo, toothpaste, soap, etc to last 10,000 apocalypses.

But they'd probably just kill me and then steal my stockpile.

^^can you produce explosives? honestly i just don't see knowing how to handle explosives as being that valuable. now, if you know how to mix up a good ol' fertilizer bomb, then i would keep you around.

[Edited on April 3, 2017 at 8:45 PM. Reason : ^having a stockpile is not a skill. this is about human capital.]

What type of apocalypse are we talking about here?

Like the grid going down? Zombies? Giant asteroid?

Well if the grid goes down Y2K style, my animal husbandry and general agricultural skills will help me out. Also my super hermit skills.

In case of the other two, I don't own a spaceship so I'm prepared to die.

I can throw things really well. Well above average hand eye coordination. And I'm a builder, so I'd need the lumber or whatever, but I know how to build things structurally sound.

If you use enough nails and duct tape, anything can be structurally sound.

No offense here, but I've watched that show Naked and Afraid before. These people are supposed wilderness survival experts and their small game traps work like 10% of the time. Even on Bear Grylls and Les Stroud's respective shows, their traps don't work too reliably.

Anyway, I don't have much to bring to the table. I'm an engineer so I guess I have critical thinking skills. I'm a pilot too, so if this group of survivors finds a working plane, I can fly it to scout things out. I've been camping and backpacking a lot, so I've got some very basic wilderness survival understanding, but only with equipment, but I'm not afraid of carrying shit long distances, sleeping outside, or bathing in a river.

Pretty much just this.

I'm very fit and strong for my size...but I'm assuming that being bigger/stronger would be more desirable.

Bearing in mind that I am not, like, a genius at any of these things, I have successfully:

-Grown food
-Produced viable compost (no, I don't just mean "shit")
-Raised and slaughtered small animals for food
-Assisted in building a house
-Consistently hit things I was aiming a firearm at
-Successfully cleaned and maintained a firearm over a long period
-Caught fish

There are undoubtedly people in this thread who are better at every single one of those things than I am, but I am better at them than large numbers of people. And I'm a pretty sharp guy. By the time we've eaten the useless ones, I'll have improved those skills a great deal. I've also demonstrated my ability to handle abrupt transitions into lower standards of living. In 2012, I went from the Philadelphia Holiday Inn to a random house in Africa in the span of about 36 hours. I didn't speak the language or know how to do anything. A suddenly inferior diet and illness caused me to lose 50 pounds in six months, but I was learning fast and adapting during that time.

I also am a genius at coalition-building and Machiavellian scheming. That may seem like bullshit; I don't care. But I can guarantee you that I could sway the group towards eating somebody else, at least the first couple of times.

Depending how suddenly this apocalypse set in, there's a decent chance i'd starve before i got it right.

I figure though if I could make it past the first 3 months, i'd end up thriving.

In the absence of free time to get drunk and mess things up, I'm not a total idiot liability. Like, I'm super good at assisting people with various tasks and extra awesome at taking instructions. For instance, if you ever need someone to hold a flash light, then I'm your person.

Not only can I follow instructions, but I can also anticipate when something needs to be done and make fairly reliable plans to address the need before asked. I know when to chime in with a helpful suggestion and when to be quiet.

I'm decent at group dynamics, helping other people get along with each other and feel good and all that.

No matter what, I will find a way to make booze and acquire/fix coffee for the group.

I can make up stories, play games, and do other fun activities with the children.

I'm not as strong as a man, but I'm not weak either. I've always had a knack for moving heavy things, and I'm good at being the assistant mover person who has to cram themselves in some awkward position or pinch their fingers.

Speaking of pinched fingers, I have a decent tolerance for pain, and minor to moderate injuries are fun to me. My immune system isn't half bad. And my legitimately screwy metabolism means I can thrive off less nutrition than others.

I'm also not too good to do sex stuff here and there if our currency is reduced to that.

Anyway, I've done a full and honest accounting on numerous occasions, and I suspect I could make myself worth keeping around.
