In summary, aide to high-ranking cardinal hosts a gay orgy in high ranking cardinal's iffice, and gets arrested. Pope is very upset.

I know the news of President Trump's tweets have dominated the last few months, so maybe that's why no outlet in the US is covering this yet. Or maybe because many anchors are Catholic.

Your thoughts?

I have one thought: Christ never said priests shouldn't marry (the Apostle Paul actually encouraged marriage).

I'm assuming they were arrested for the drugs not the gay orgy?

And maybe this isn't getting press bc consenting adults having sex isn't newsworthy.

As far as the catholic church, this seems pretty mild as scandals go

In conclusion, who cares?

This is a false flag directed by Raymond Burke and other anti-pope Cardinals. Steve Bannon is probably involved too.

Well, fake news or not, I think we should migrate to the topic of why priests can't marry. I think it would solve so many problems. I'm not Catholic, but I don't think I could seriously take marriage advice from someone who couldn't ever get married.

It's 2017. Gay people can legally marry in the eyes of many churches. Why can't priests?

This reads like an Onion headline, lol

^The churches that recognize and perform gay marriage tend to be Protestant and Protestant clergy can marry.

Word is they have been selling indulgences. Wish someone would stand up to them about that.

Because extremist and extremist-light religious groups like to create arbitrary rules based on non-existent evidence to control people.

"A harrowing, 1,356-page grand-jury report on sexual abuse in Pennsylvania’s Catholic Church was released Tuesday by the state Supreme Court, detailing decades of alleged abuse, sexual assault, and attempted cover-ups.

The numbers are simply staggering, as the historic report—which is the result of an 18-month investigation into six of Pennsylvania’s eight dioceses—lists more than 300 “predator priests” who are accused of preying on more than 1,000 victims over the last several decades."

How?

(Under no circumstances is it safe to let your kids within 500 ft of a church.)

I’m not sure if people have been following some of the Southern Baptist child abuse saga, but it’s as bad or worst than the catholic links above^. :

Is taking your kids to church tantamount to neglect/child abuse????

[Edited on February 15, 2019 at 7:34 PM. Reason : You’re literally introducing them to child predator central by taking them to church]

I wouldn't say it's as bad as the Catholic church's situation. The numbers of people involved aren't of the same magnitude, there's no systemic coverup, and the decentralized nature of the Baptist denomination would make centralized tracking and reporting difficult anyway.

I'd be interested in comparing the rates of abuse to other volunteer organizations which work with young people.

You are correct that this S. Baptist isn’t quite as bad as what we currently know about the Catholic episode (but comparing body counts in massive tragedies like this is not very useful IMO).

However, this S Baptist investigation was pretty much only one state (Texas) and if we can peel more layers back, I think we are gonna find these stories are way to prevalent for this to be acceptable.

I’m interested in a comparison of abuse rates among other youth programs as well, and may spend some time looking for those. In the meantime I’ll give you my hunch:

Of the youth programs I was involved in as a kid, outside of church, there were actually strict rules about a youth and an adult being alone together at anytime. The Youth programs had a more egalitarian adult leadership structure that allowed adults to ask questions of each other. I know I’m at least one case both myself and the leaders had to attend “trainings” that specifically addressed abuse and rules to prevent it.

US Christian churches by comparison have much stricter hierarchies in leadership. They even promote hierarchy at home with the patriarchal family. Physical child abuse, to some degree and in specific circles (spare the rod), is even promoted. Sexual “evils” of all types are condemned but never spoken of. Most importantly, the role of shame in manipulating people to be obedient church goers is directly similiar to the shame abusers use to keep victims obediently quiet about abuse.

So yeah, I think there are problems in modern churches (of many different denominations) that need to be addressed.

Quote :
"Our analyses revealed little variability in the rates of alleged abuse acr oss regions of the Catholic Church in the U.S.—the range was fr om 3% to 6% of priests."

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/2485360

Quote :
"the rate of abuse by persons in youth-serving organizations was 0.4% (95% CI, 0.2-0.7) for the past year and 0.8% (95% CI, 0.5-1.1) over the lifetime."

So 3-6x more likely abuse among catholic priests vs youth-serving orgs. Both articles make it clear that abuse from a family member is still way more prevalent than either of these.
