Lilly's Pizza

What do you mean "NYC style"? Giant thin slices or made with imported NYC sewer water?

capital creations and moonlight are better than lilly's

i prefer neopolitain style though but there aren't many options in raleigh, maybe pizza la stella is the best. in durham i like pizzeria toro or pompieri pizza.

Oakwood Pizza Box is fantastic IMO -- their White is the standout and they use those smaller pepperoni that crisp up on the edges and turn into little grease cups. Crust has a nice crunch but is also pleasantly chewy. Definitely my favorite new spot.

Their hours, however, are inscrutable.

Peri Brothers on Six Forks is my current #1 in Raleigh. Been meaning to try Cristo's, and Bella Italia on Durant is pretty solid.

I do miss Amore. Ruckus is a long time favorite but they're a bit too heavy on the cheese for me. Randy's is really popular but the slice I had didn't impress.

We need El Presidente to come down here and do some reviews. One bite, everybody knows the rules!

Are you talking just Raleigh? or the greater Raleigh/triangle area?

I'm a big fan of Mamma Mia's Italian bistro in Apex. They have a big 28" pizza. Lunch special of 2 slices with 1 topping and a drink for $4.99

Mostly Raleigh, but I'll venture out for a promising slice as long as it's not in Cary.

Moonlight has the best crust

Oakwood Pizza Box is pretty great as well and gets bonus points for it being within walking distance from my house

Lilly’s is still good, but not as good as they used to be

I really like the pizza at Trophy, but they’re more experimental and less traditional than the others

I used to think highly of Lilly's, but the last few times I've gone there I thought the pizza quality was crap. I don't go there anymore.

Salvio's in North Raleigh is probably my favorite. Ruckus MV and Trophy are both great, too.

Lily's has amazing cheese/toppings but the sauce and especially the crust is too sweet for my taste.

I actually go to Lilly's for the salads. La Stella has pretty good pizza's on Fayetteville St.

If you're in Apex, Anna's Pizzeria on Salem St.

I'm gong to be very clear about what I'm going to say here.

Taste in pizza is extremely subjective, so people can like whatever they want. Having eaten a lot of pizza in Raleigh, I'm a fan of Lilly's, but respect those who prefer Moonlight or Capital Creations. Hell, Trophy isn't my favorite but I get it. That said, Oakwood Pizza Box is fucking horrible. I don't even know how it could be called pizza..

I'd understand if the place sold 1000 different things and pizza was just one of them, but even then I'd expect better. We've tried it on several occasions, when busy or slow, a weekend or weekday, etc. and each time it has been fucking horrible. The place is decent on the inside, they have a reasonable beer selection, and the location is great but that doesn't come close to making up for how insanely bad their pizza is. While their limited toppings do bother me, I could even get passed that but in this case it makes their flavorless, rubbery, characterless pizza even more upsetting because if you have that few toppings then you should be able to offer something amazing with it.

Anyway, in case it wasn't clear, I want to make it abundantly clear Oakwood Pizza Box is a fucking shit show. @GenghisJohn

Nah. It's just that bad. We've had it drunk and sober. Fresh and the next day. I've seen zero conditions under which that place actually has decent pizza. I feel I could accidentally knock over some ketchup onto some nan and then plop a fist full of shredded cheese onto it and be at parity with that place.

That's actually hyperbole, but I do feel that Oakwood Pizza Box is the worst pizza I have had in Raleigh. Hands down.

What we've ordered there:

Cheese (between bad and okay. lacked flavor in any capacity. the cheese sort of tasted like armpits smell).
Cheese + Green Pepper + Onion (Neither my wife nor I finished a 2nd slice from the 18" Box we bought).
Pepperoni + Onion (close to okay but after drinking it should have been great.)
Cheese again (were curious if creating our own was the problem. sadly it was not. We even grabbed basil from our own backyard to make it tolerable. that almost helped.)

Fuck that place man. Honestly, it disappoints me so because it is so close to the house that I want it to be awesome. I'd really like to be able to enjoy it but they have failed me every time. If we were starved, it was late, raining, and that were the only place open, then I'd MAYBE go again. I doubt I'd eat it if gifted.

sucks you don't enjoy the rad pizza place so near your house. when was the last time you went?

shits so good that ill even pay for postmates to bring it to me. its like the only thing i use postmates for.

i will say that i have noticed when reheating it you gotta crank the oven to 425-450 so you can bring some crisp back to the crust, otherwise its pretty good but nothing special. but fresh out of the oven it checks all the boxes for me. i'm astounded that someone else could have a wildly opposite experience, but hey i get it. we all have our shit we dislike that everyone else won't shut up about.

I'll second Oakwood....but for simple, NYC style, Randy's off Lake Boone is great. Also has the best steak and cheese in town.

Cast iron reheat (+ a pot cover to warm throughout) will give ya a good crisp.
