Actuarially speaking, what are the odds that Bernie lives to 2024?

If he's 77 he's a little more than 24% likely to die in the next five years.

He has access to much better medical care than the average person. That statistic doesn't apply. And it doesn't matter anyways if he picks a solid VP.

Bernie dying in office and his VP becoming president is better than the alternative.

AOC fans should want a President Gillibrand because it means a fast track to a Senate seat.

I tend to agree but underestimate her at your own peril. She is a political bloodhound and will absolutely be a force to be reckoned with. Her answer to a question about how she did Franken was excellent.

Well, I mean, it DOES matter. Dying in office isn't a minor hiccup. Even assuming that Bernie's hypothetical successor was ideologically in lockstep with him - unlikely, because electoral math needs to be considered, and because he'll need to pick someone with foreign policy chops if he really has the country's interests at heart - even if you got someone who wanted to stay the course completely, there'd be precious weeks and months lost in which no real business took place. Plus, VP successors historically don't fare too well come election time.

I suppose one positive that could come of it is maybe it would reverse this troubling tend towards crusty geriatrics running the country.

His being old won't affect my voting for him in the general, if he's nominated, but you're a fool if you think "it doesn't matter" that a given candidate is substantially more likely to die in office. Other countries have a maximum age limit for high office and I'd very much favor the same here, though fat chance with AARP's surprisingly strong is arthritic grip on politics.

He'll do like Strom Thurmond and die at age 100 just months after retiring. Politicians love having power over the people and don't understand how to do anything else. They love being in the spot light. There are also a lot of perks that come with being a politician. If Bernie doesn't win this time he'll run again next cycle, and the next one, and the next one, etc.

Its not like he's the ranking member on the Senate budget committee and doesn't know how to ask the CBO for an estimate.

But look, he's a non-serious politician with non-serious policies.

Every big plan he's put forth has a method to pay for it on his issues page. The question was unfairly framed. No, he obviously can't add up in his head the total cost on the spot.

I think the "controversy" about that interview is way overblown, but Bernie should have known better as a politician than to give the answer he did. And he should definitely know the total cost of all the programs he's proposing. If he has a cost for each of them individually, he should know how to add them up. even if it's just a range since all of them are just projections anyways.

It's a bad question because "total cost" is not something that can just be conjured up. Are we talking per year? Per person? It depends on the plan and how you frame the question of cost. M4A would cost trillions of dollars, but it's cheaper than the system we currently have. So do you factor in the savings into your answer?

Ultimately, they're just looking for a soundbite they can use against him.

of course. but he should be prepared to add the missing qualifications - per year, over 10 years, per person, per family, however it is that he wants to frame it. but just saying "i can't tell you the cost" is gonna get him the reaction he got, and he should have know that's what would happen

Anderson Cooper is a dishonest piece of shit. Bernie denounced authoritarian nature and said "but programs to increase childhood literacy were great" and cooper's response was "so you agree with throwing dissidents in prison?".

The other question is a gotcha question and the answer is irrelevant. Bernie didn't want to get into MMT because it requires longer time to explain. Cooper was just shopping for a soundbite. Its all he ever does.

Quote :
"According to the report, Vanderbilt's net worth is estimated at US$200 million thanks to her sizeable inheritance and the money she made from her eponymous denim line in the 1980s"

HOW ARE YOU GONNA PAY FOR THAT?
HOW ARE YOU GONNA PAY FOR THAT?
HOW ARE YOU GONNA PAY FOR THAT?
HOW ARE YOU GONNA PAY FOR THAT?
HOW ARE YOU GONNA PAY FOR THAT?
HOW ARE YOU GONNA PAY FOR THAT?
HOW ARE YOU GONNA PAY FOR THAT?

Its tiring. We're going to have treasury type the money into accounts by adding zeroes. Thats literally how the government pays for everything. Nothing has to be offset with a tax even though we will substantially offset most of the costs with new taxes on the super wealthy. The programs will encourage growth and spending which will offset inflation enough to make up for any gaps between spending and taxes. We don't know what any of these variables will be because we can't predict how people will react. Thats the full answer and requires a long lecture to explain.

No one else has ever been held to the standard of explaining the innerworkings of monetary theory and spending. It would only be understandable if the country had never ran a spending deficit.

I honestly don't give a shit if he doesn't give details because frankly, nobody will understand the economics and minutia anyway. Still would be nice if ^^ had been in place already and that he had a succinct way to overview it just to avoid these gotcha moments somewhat. Yeah, I'm sure they'd just find flaws in the plans and counter with think tank estimates that award him 3 Pinocchios but it's better than nothing.

One of the better things Warren has done in her campaign in my opinion is the "tax of two cents of every dollar over $50 million" to explain the wealth tax. It's quick and easy to understand. Whether you agree it's a good plan or that it generates enough money to pay for her proposals is another topic but nobody is claiming she has "no idea how we're going to pay" for her proposals.

sanders had already given high level plans for how to pay for most (all?) of his plans he just hadn't condensed it to a single website list

the "how is he going to pay for it" people weren't arguing in good faith

Of course they aren't arguing in good faith but this shouldn't even be a gotcha moment for Bernie at this point. It's been the main line of attack against him since he announced he was running.
