I have zero interest in seeing the movie, but I'm interested in how a billion dollar franchise went to shit.

you could argue it went to shit in 1999 if you're just talking about the "main movies"

Say what you want about the prequel trilogy, but at least Lucas had a plan from start to finish for it

I feel like they really screwed this trilogy up by not defining an outline before letting each director have their own way. I bet they spend too much time in the new movie trying to undo or retell what happened in TLJ.

Well the plan to have 3 different directors for the last 3 films (even though it ended up with only 2) was always a terrible idea. So, blame Disney.

OT had different directors, the issue was no coherent story planned for 3 movies.

Right, but they all had George Lucas keeping things relatively on track.

Disney just kind of let them do whatever the fuck they wanted. I need to watch TLJ again, but i think I will like it less on the second try.

^I rewatched it last weekend. I was hoping that after two years it would have gotten better, but it was just as much of a mess. If anything, I noticed more things wrong with it.

Such as?

My gripes were basically the same as everyone else's. The humor fell flat and felt out of place, they shouldn't have killed Luke, they shouldn't have killed Snoke, and in a series about a certain family and their offspring/ancestors they just brushed off lineage like it meant nothing. I didn't care too much about Leia using the force, I thought that was ok. The whole Canto Bight side-quest turned out to be a fruitless endeavor that wasted a great actor who could have been used for something else. They built up Captain Phasma only to have her fall off a ledge into some fire. The bombers were way too easily destroyed.

Just so many things.

I get it, it's the force, Luke can show up later as a force ghost, but I felt like it was just cheap having Luke go out the way he did.

I won't go through all of them, but even in the first 10 mins. This is just specific examples of what you mentioned with the humor falling flat and being out of place, but Poe putting Hux on "hold" to stall, then delivering what was essentially a yo mamma joke. Why would he even be using terminology regarding 20th century Earth technology?

Why would the First Order not be scrambling TIE fighters as soon as they saw even one small Resistance fighter coming towards them? Why would they not already have TIE fighters out and at the ready considering they were about to get into a considerable space battle with the Resistance?

Poe just plowed through literally every cannon on the First Order dreadnought that could have shot him like they were nothing. I get that he is a very skilled pilot, but it shouldn't be that easy for one lone X-Wing to effortlessly take down their defenses. And if it were that easy, why wouldn't they just load Poe's X-Wing up with some torpedoes and have him fly right to the bridge of the dreadnought and start blasting?

What is the deal with the bombers? Why do the bombs feel the effects of gravity when everything else is in orbit? Why would they even be using traditional bombs that you have to literally drop instead of torpedoes? Even TIE bombers in the past have projectile based bombs. And as you mentioned, the bombers themselves were way too easily destroyed to the point where I don't see how they could effective in any battle.

I've heard they tried to explain the bombs away as being magnetic, but that doesn't make sense either, because if they were magnetic, how would they not be dropped and then just come back up around and stick to the hull of their own ship?

At this point, so much money is being thrown at these movies that there ought to be enough writers to hash things out like that before putting it on screen.

^^Who said my childhood was dead? All I said was that Episode 8 was a mess. I still love the Star Wars franchise as a whole and the universe it created. Also, way to pick out literally just one thing I said and claim that is the only reason I didn't like it. If I had more time, I could go into way more detail about the problems in Episode 8, not just related to physics of bombs, but moreso with plot holes and generally awful writing.

That being said, there were good parts of the movie. It was just disappointing overall.

The Dreadnought and Snoke's ship were great (I wish Lego would make these sets btw). The battle (minus Kylo Ren) on the salt-planet was great. The Praetorian guard was absolutely kick-ass. But the bad things just overshadow the good, for me.

Spoiler free review:

It was serviceable and pretty fun but I don’t have strong feelings for it either way. Definitely kept it moving and tied everything up as well as they could have after the cluster fuck that was the last two.

I read spoilers and think it was a decent way to end it, considering what they had to work with from #8.

[spoilers]

apparently falling into a deep hole is not a way to die in star wars. Luke, Maul, Palpatine, and Kylo all are thrown into a pit and somehow survive. Until you turn into a force ghost, you are not dead.

first - some good things. I liked C3PO this movie, good humor although the whole sith translation restriction was silly. I liked the theme that they tried to introduce that they won the first time because they were together.

why did palpatine have to be part of this movie? Didn't he ask Ben to kill Rey to get the fleet, but then it was his master plan all along to steal her body? Where did all the people flying the final order fleet come from? Snope said he was connecting Rey/Kylo in TLJ, but I guess they figured out how to do it themselves (and transport physical items between themselves). Why did Palpatine bother building fucking death stars when he had a fleet of planet killers all along, smh.

Should have been split between 2 shorter movies with more exposition, or 3 chapters with longer Pixar shorts packaged together.

That said, I was processing a lot of it last night, and am now wishing scenes were on YouTube, so it musta done something right in my brain.

I thought this was great. Everybody seems to either be team Rian Johnson or team JJ. I'm team JJ and think the 2nd movie ruined the plot. You just can't have two separate people alternate controlling the plot in a trilogy. I'll be back with spoilers.

^couldn’t agree more. The main flaws in Ep 9 were due to it having to clean up a lot of the mess from Ep 8. If 8 had been more coherent, 9 would have been even better. And I already love 9.

While I thought TLJ was better I still enjoyed this one.

Definitely felt more like a Harry Potter than Star Wars with people rushing from one mcguffin to the next.

They could have taken out one of the many planets they visited and filled that time with a little room to breathe and the movie would probably have been better for it.

I thought it was good. Not great, better than VIII and VII, not as good at V, IV, or VI a bit better than III, better than II, and much better than I. R1 is better.

V, IV, VI, (R1, IX,) (III, HS, VII,) VIII, II, I

I am willing to argue that it is worse than any of the prequels. Everything about it is complete garbage.
